Failure analysis of semiconductor device is becoming increasingly difficult as VLSI technology evolves toward smaller features and semiconductor device structures become more complex. Especially considering that the defective area obtained through diagnosis pin-pointing faulty sites is not the same size as the area subjected to physical analysis, and this disparity becomes more pronounced as feature sizes shrink. This prompted us to develop an extremely fine scaled SEM mechanical probing system permitting identification of minute fault sites. The development involved a number of related projects including investigation of a precision probe and stage mechanism that can deal with submicron semiconductor devices, a six-probe mechanism for expanded capabilities of performing inverter measurements and precision single transistor measurements, a probe and sample exchange mechanism that works while under vacuum to achieve high throughput, and a robust CAD navigation system. The system is now ready and available for practical application to 65-nm feature devices, and can be readily adapted to at least the next couple of generation nodes.

process optimization plays an important role in design, operation, control and computer integrated control of process industries. This paper presents the description of steady-state optimization, dynamic optimization, and the optimization of process structures based on changing market conditions in process industries. Characteristics of these optimization problems are addressed and state of the art solution approaches are proposed. Sequential quadratic programming and orthogonal collocation is used to solve the dynamic optimization problem. Finally, the dynamic optimization to minimize the energy cost of a heat-integrated distillation column system is illustrated as an example.

The Plasma Arc Waste Destruction System (PAWDS) uses plasma energy, with temperatures over 5,000 degrees C, to rapidly and efficiently destroy combustible waste aboard ships. PAWDS has proven itself to be a viable alternative to traditional incinerators. >> In September 2003, Carnival Cruise Lines were the first to install a PAWDS aboard their 2,056 passenger (plus 1,000 crew members) capacity, M/S Fantasy cruise ship, to treat ship waste including paper, cardboard, plastics, textiles, wood, and food. As of June 2004, it is being operated and maintained solely by Carnival Cruise Lines personnel and has been permitted to operate in port by the Bahamian port authorities. >> The Navy's next generation aircraft carrier, CVN 21, will be equipped with two FAWDS to process all of the non-food combustible solid waste generated with sufficient system redundancy. The US Navy has been jointly developing the PAWDS with PyroGenesis Inc. over the last 6 years. The development efforts in 2004 and 2005 coupled with lessons learned from operation aboard Carnival's cruise ship have resulted in the identification of additional process and design improvements. Source emission testing by an independent laboratory has also demonstrated that the PAWDS easily meets IMO MARPOL requirements for the destruction of solid waste.

The kilogram is the last of the seven base SI units to be defined in terms of an artefact rather than with relation to a fundamental physical constant. This presents a unique set of problems to do with the stability of the artefact itself and with the dissemination of the unit of mass. Additionally the SI units of the ampere, the mole and the candela rely on traceability to the kilogram for their realisation. For over two decades scientists at NMIs around the world have been investigating potential methods for re-defining the kilogram in terms of fundamental constants. The theory behind these methods of re-definition is relatively straightforward;the problem comes with the practical realisation of a useable unit of mass. The theory behind and progress of the three main methods;the Avogadro project, the Watt balance and the ion accumulation method has been reviewed. Recent meetings of the Consultative Committees for Mass (CCM) and for SI Units (CCU) have made recommendations for the level of accuracy which must be achieved and proposed a timescale for the redefinition of the kilogram. These proposals are discussed.

The benefits of implementing a single-stranded caster No.3 to produce slabs of 250mm thickness and widths of 850 to 2100 by Salgitter Flachstahi is discussed. The caster is equipped with a spring-loaded resonance oscillator with hydraulic drive, continuous frictional force measurement, and the Cyberlink segments for soft reduction with dynamically controlled segment adjustment. The automation system includes a breakout prediction system in the mold, and dynamic process models. The caster has also enhanced the grade range by adding in particular phosphor-alloyed and high-tensile steel grades, including HIC resistant as well as interstitial-free (IF) and carbon steel grades.

An international team from ABB and the Imperial College London/University College London's Centre for processsystemsengineering has initiated a project to reduce the time spent on troubleshooting in processing plants. The project aims at automatically detecting plant-wide disturbances and determining the root causes of disturbances and oscillations in production processes. Researchers at the University have developed methods for computer-aided plant disturbance analysis.
