In early design phases an effective information exchange among CAD (Computer Aided Design) tools depends on a standardized representation for the product data in all PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) tools. The NIST Core Product Model (CPM) and its extension are proposed to provide the required base-level product model that is open, non-proprietary, generic, extensible, independent of any one product development process and capable of capturing the full engineering context commonly shared in product development. The Open Assembly Model (OAM) Model extends CPM to provide a standard representation and exchange protocol for assembly. The assembly information model emphasizes the nature and information requirements for part features and assembly relationships. The model includes both assembly as a concept and assembly as a data structure. For the latter it uses the model data structures of ISO 10303, informally known as the Standard for the Exchange of Product model data (STEP). The objective of the paper is to show how the OAM can be used to realize seamless integration of product information, with an emphasis on assembly, throughout all phases of a product design. A gearbox design example is used to illustrate the process.

Saudi Aramco completed an in-house technical and economic evaluation of processes to address severe Claus catalyst deactivation resulting from BTX in the acid gas. Based on the evaluation, the company is proceeding with the design and planned installation of a carbon bed adsorption process on seven sulfur recovery units at two of its largest gas plants, i.e., Uthmaniyah Gas Plant and Shedgum Gas Plant. A discussion covers the design basis conditions for the acid gas at each site;several commonly used processes to address BTX deactivation that are technically and/or economically not viable in hot desert environments if the acid gas is very lean, i.e., oxygen enrichment, fuel gas co-firing, changing the upstream sour gas treating the amine, refrigerating the feed, BTX adsorption from acid gas using a regenerable molecular sieve, acid gas enrichment, fuel gas stripping, and BTX adsorption from acid gas using regenerable activated carbon beds;cost estimates;and final process selection.

Two laboratory-scale experiments have been developed that can be executed safely over the Internet. They provide practical experience for students of processcontrol. Remote access is within a client-server paradigm. Servers connected to the processes through the usual data acquisition hardware address issues regarding safety, security, data validation, and session management. A unique feature of the lab is the ability for the student to design, test, and verify control strategies in real time over the Internet. Necessary interlocks and cutoffs ensure safe remote operation of the units. Studies have shown that network speeds are not a significant concern for these systems due to slow process dynamics. The availability of Internet-mediated laboratory modules on an anytime/anywhere basis will enable a larger fraction of the class to get valuable laboratory experience. These experiments have also been used in an Internet-wired classroom for interactive demonstrations during lecture.

In order to fulfill the Mexican Electric Utility's (CFE) modernization demands, the Electrical Research Institute (IIE) developed at the process Super Vision Department an improved Human Machine Interface (HMI) modernization for a Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) to replace the old one based on VAX workstations with a microcomputer base system using personal computers(pc), maintaining the same functionali1y and integrating management capabilities as well as processing functions currently performed by a proprietary system. The HMI modernization provided to CFE an integral solution through a single interface allowing the system tointerface not only to current proprietary controllers but also to commercial controllers, PLCs or other Intelligent Electronic Device by integrating opc technology. Data analysis is possible in the improved HMI due to a powerful database back-end engine added to the system. Integrating new technology to legacy systems in order to preserve its life span and be able to integrate modem devices represented a challenge to be resolved. This paperalsodescribes how suitable these new technologies promises were accomplished in the IHM modernization. Improvements to the HMI also included an intuitive color-base navigation in a multi-level model. Improvements in communications involved the replacement of the current PC-based communication concentrators with a pair of high performance servers to improve the overall system flexibility and robustness. Among the more challenging tasks was the integration of a modem commercial redundancy system to work with current proprietary controllers.

In this paper a step-by-step procedure for carrying out synthesis of geometric tolerances of a planetary gearbox using a deviation-based tolerance synthesis (TS) scheme has been presented. The TS scheme uses an optimization for minimizing total cost of manufacturing, subject to constraints for assemblability of parts and constraints for functional requirements. The TS work is carried out in several stages. First the gearbox with its nominal dimensions is converted into a model that could serve as input to the synthesis module. Cost functions and constraints equations are then generated using deviation parameters of features. The optimization is carried out using these equations in standard non-linear minimization tools (Matlab) and the optimal deviation parameters are subsequently mapped into suitable tolerance specifications or tolerance zones as per ANSI Y14.5 tolerancing standards.

This paper presents an approach to calculate prefilters that are insensitive to parameter deviations. The cost function chosen for this approach is the magnitude of the time-delay filter transfer function. By approximating the cost function with a polynomial, the effort of calculating minimax robust profiles can be reduced. The resulting control profiles yield a performance similar to the minimax robust controller. This is verified by the numerical results included in this paper.
