controlsystems are essential to support the use of building structures as short-term thermal energy storage (TES). Due to modeling and forecast imperfections, the controller must be able to deal with uncertainties. This paper proposes a robust model predictive controller (MPC) with a new uncertainty set construction technique to regulate the heat supply in a building envelope. We extend the Support Vector Clustering-based set construction technique to estimate modeling and forecast uncertainty sets. Subsequently, we integrate the sets into a Min-Max MPC framework to ensure robust feasibility by tightening the constraints. The resulting controller successfully deals with modeling and forecast uncertainties. The quality of the presented framework is compared with a nominal MPC and a robust MPC with different uncertainty set estimates. On the basis of a numerical simulation, we demonstrate that the proposed controller successfully maintains the room temperature within the comfort limits. The result also shows that our MPC is less conservative than the controller designed using a box-shaped non-falsifed parametric uncertainty set.

The surge in urbanization and ensuing traffic congestion underscores the imperative for contemporary traffic flow control models. This paper explores the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) theory in the macroscopic domain of traffic flow control. It evaluates the accuracy and mathematical logic of simulation performance of related models, namely Greenshields, Newell-Daganzo, Greenberg, Underwood, and California. This paper employs thorough simulations that utilize a holistic three-dimensional(3D) analysis based on time, location, and density. It provides a comprehensive comparison and discusses specific features of each model. Additionally, a modification to the macroscopic model is proposed. The modified model overcomes the shortcomings of performing well only in some specific short ranges and achieves a full range of application effects. The study offers valuable guidance for real-life scenario selections and applications in the traffic domain.

This paper presents the design of supervisory model predictive control for HVAC systems and two zones. The supervisory control (SC) is designed to find the optimal reference temperature of each zone. The design criteria consist of the total operating cost (TOC) and the thermal comfort cost (TCC). Then, the model predictive control (MPC) is designed to track the optimal reference signals. When SC and MPC are designed for two zones simultaneously, they are referred to centralized SC and centralized MPC. On the other hand, when SC and MPC are designed for two zones separately, they referred to decentralized SC and decentralized MPC. We then compare the results between the decentralized control and the centralized control. The trade-off curve shows that the performance of centralized control is better than that of decentralized control. In particular, centralized MPC improves the performance in tracking reference signals. Furthermore, TOC of centralized control is lower than that of decentralized control. It can be concluded that the centralized control is appropriate for two zones in terms of the tracking of reference and the electrical charge.

This paper focuses on formulating and solving the optimization of crude oil operations scheduling carried out in a system composed of a refinery and a marine terminal. The main challenge lies in coordinating the decisions made at both facilities and, at the same time, dealing with the uncertainties inherent in this activity. To tackle this problem, we present a continuous-time mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) formulation. Furthermore, uncertainty in the ship arrival times is considered through a two-stage stochastic programming approach. Finally, the Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) risk measure is employed to weigh the risk of having high costs relative to the worst scenarios. In this way, the proposed model is capable of supporting the decision-making process under uncertainty in an integral way.
