A silica-titania (Si-Ti) mixed hydroxide gel with Ti to Si mole ratio of 1 : 1 was prepared Studies on the sorption of radiostrontium from alkaline solutions having various concentrations of sodium were carried out with Si-Ti. The distribution coefficient (K-d) of strontium decreased with increasing concentrations of sodium from 0.1 to 4.0 ***(-3). The plot of log K-d versus log [Na+] gave a slope of -0.55 as against the theoretical value of -2.0. This suggests that some other paths in addition to the simple stoichiometric ion exchange is also existing for sorption. From pH titrations the pH(pzc) of Si-Ti was found to be 4.22 coinciding nearly with the pH sorption edge. An attempt was made to correlate the sorption results with the surface characteristics of the sort,ent. It was found that sorption is favored when the surface of the sorbent transforms into an anionic form. Sharp increase in the sorption of strontium was observed when the equilibrium pH was between 7 and 10. This behavior could be attributed to the abrupt increase in net negative charge on the surface of the sorbent.

This paper deals with nonlinear predictive control based on higher order Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems which can also be interpreted as generalized radial basis function networks. We investigate how the fuzzy models can be linked to a special type of model based predictive control algorithm, namely the dynamic matrix control (DMC). Previously, purely linear step response models were used for long-range prediction. Here, the method is extended to nonlinear processes. Therefore, various step responses for different operating points are extracted from the fuzzy model. For performance evaluation, a heat exchanger is identified by means of the local linear model tree algorithm and controlled by the modified DMC.

A new method for nonlinear model predictive control with guaranteed stability is proposed as an extension to the stability constrained model predictive control (SCMPC) for linear time-invariant systems. The method applies to a class of nonlinear systems that can be transformed to a controllable companion form and depends on the existence of a nonlinear deadbeat control (although this is not necessarily the control that is used). This article presents an extension to stability-constrained model predictive control (SCMPC) incorporating state estimation. It is proved that asymptotic stability of the closed loop system is guaranteed for SCMPC when a stable state estimator is used rather than direct measurement of the full state variables. The results are illustrated with experimental results from a real-time implementation of SCMPC with state estimation for control of a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system.

Response data from a novel micro-hotplate gas sensor were used to test a robust classification technique based on an artificial neural network. Four different compounds were identified even when the sensor signal was corrupted by high levels of noise and drift. Additional verification rules in doubtful cases were provided by examining unique binary patterns of outputs of the hidden layer neurons. Similarities to proposed models of the human nose are noted.

This paper considers an effort to reinvent the process by which the Navy transforms operational requirements into warships. The objective is to articulate a framework and strategy for implementing a total ship system engineering approach. Three factors drive the effort: involve the warfighters in the design process;adopt a ''system of systems'' framework for integration;and continually improve the acquisition process. The strategy is illustrated by consideration of control structure on a total ship basis. The work has been conducted as a collaborative effort involving three Navy warfare centers and various headquarters activities in Washington, D.C.
