A simulation-based test for the stability along the pass of a differential unit memory linear multipass process is developed which is suitable for software implementation. Further, it is shown that this test produces, at no extra cost, information concerning the rate of approach of the output sequence to the limit profile in one special case of practical interest. Finally, the use of this unique feature in controller design is briefly discussed.

The following is a discussion of the potential for chemicals from coal, based on existing technology (proven or under development), and a likely scenario for the transition from oil (and natural gas) to coal as the primary feedstock. Oil shale and tar sands are also alternative feedstocks, but will not be discussed in this article. On a world scale, coal is the most important alternative fuel and chemical feedstock in terms of reserves, availability, commercial acceptance, and technology development. Furthermore, similar arguments and reasoning apply to the future emergence of other fossil fuels as significant alternative fuel and chemical feedstocks.

Some performance robustness properties of non-adaptive internal model control system against modelling error and load disturbances are presented; these properties may be important for the adaptive control scheme. Petri nets are applied to the bottom-up design of a handshaking protocol for transferring parts through a sequence of workstations. The authors illustrate the application of Petri-net theory to verify properties of the complete system behavior based on the structure of the Petri-net model. It is shown that communication between local controllers is modeled by places corresponding to upstream and downstream messages. Consistency in the interconnection of the subsystem models is guaranteed by the identification of these communication places. To analyze the properties of the complete system, results on liveness and place invariants for Petri nets are applied to the Petri-net model.< >

The unknown nonlinear process is approximated by the Hammerstein model, which is one of the natural expansions of the discrete convolution model to nonlinear systems· Because of the large number of the parameters an identification procedure with scalar convergence coefficients is recommended. The control task is to follow a reference model output predicted ahead in a given horizon· The present and future control activities during the prediction horizon are determined minimizing a functional of the error signal between the predicted values of the reference model and the system output. The control signal is assumed constant during the control horizon and the calculation is repeated in each control interval. Simulation results represent the robust behaviour of the control algorithms.

The underlying hypothesis of the case study described is that the development, implementation, operations, and maintenance of large, complex, data-intensive applications, such as computer-integrated manufacturing, can be simplified through the use of object-oriented database management systems (DBMSs). The objective of the case study is to verify this hypothesis. The approach is to prototype selected representative components of a computer-integrated-manufacturing system; these components have been developed on top of a relational DBMS, using an object-oriented DBMS, called Iris. The fundamental elements of the data model of Iris are objects, types, and functions. An Iris object is represented by a unique identifier. Each object is associated with at least one type. This association supports classification. An object is said to be the instance of the types with which it has classification associations. The results of the study illustrate that the object-oriented prototype has a superior schema, is capable of providing convenient access to information, and is easier to extend and maintain.< >

A significant tonnage of HY-100 steel has been used in the structural designs of new ships and submarines for weight reduction, where HT and HY-80 steels had been previously used. A reduction in hull fabrication costs and higher productivity can be achieved by substitution of an HSLA steel for HY-100. The significant factor in cost savings through use of HSLA steel in fabrication is the reduction or elimination of preheat for welding. Based on the success of the HSLA-80 steel system, a program was initiated to develop and certify an HSLA-100 steel as a replacement for HY-100 in order to reduce fabrication costs. The alloy development and evaluation to support the certification of HSLA-100 steel plate and weldments for surface combatant structural and ballistic protection applications are summarized. HSLA-100 development consisted of three phases: (1) laboratory alloy development to formulate an interim specification; (2) trial steel mill plate production; and (3) plate production for the certification program. An interim specification for HSLA-100 steel plate was used as the basis for the commercial production of over 200 tons of HSLA-100 by domestic steel plate mills. The alloy design of HSLA-100 represents a significantly different metallurgy and microstructure than HSLA-80 steel, but retains the wettability of very low carbon steel. The certification program was conducted to establish the properties, welding characteristics, fabricability, and structural performance of HSLA-100 steel plate over a range of gages from 1/4 to 3 3/4 inches. The certification program included the characterization of production HSLA-100 steel plate mechanical, physical, and fracture properties; evaluation of wettability and welding process limits for structures of high restraint; studies of fatigue properties and effects of marine environments on HSLA-100; and the fabrication and evaluation of large scale structural models to validate the laboratory developed welding process parameters

The basis of a comprehensive real-time knowledge based system for control structure design and supervisory control is developed using the MUSE AT toolkit. Representation of controlengineering knowledge as procedural code in an object-based structure ensures that the knowledge base is easily understood and modified by domain experts. The simple learning capability that has been implemented has proved to be extremely useful and is being developed further as part of continuing research in this area. It is also hoped to extend the capabilities of the supervisory modules particularly in dealing with loop interactions, the prediction and diagnosis of faults and the provision of an intelligent operator interface.< >
