Identification and detection of the community structure is fundamental and important problem for the analysis of complex network. To detect community structure precisely, a new community detection algorithm was designed based on genetic algorithm and modularity density D. The algorithm does not need any prior knowledge about the number of communities, requires no arbitrary convergence or abruption criteria, and can generally find the global optimal solution. Genetic algorithm for detecting communities in complex networks, based on optimizing network modularity density was presented here. The algorithm was illustrated and compared with GN algorithm by using classic real world networks. Optimizing modularity density D not only can resolve detail modules but also can correctly identify the number of communities. Experimental results show the method can reveal community structure more precisely than traditional approaches. According to the definition of community in a strong sense, the nodes in experimental result which have more connections within the community than with the rest of the graph are more than the other partitions.

In order to improve particle swarm optimization (PSO) to solve complex and large scale discrete optimization problems, the paper introduces an improved discrete particle swarm optimization (IDPSO) based on edge coding and multilevel reduction strategy. First, redefine the velocity and position of the particle based on edge-coding, and adopted converted insertion of the edge to update the information of the particle. Next, introduce multilevel reduction strategy to improve the global convergence ability of the algorithm. The improved algorithm is applied to solve representative cases of traveling salesman problem (TSP), The results show that the improved DPSO is efficient and valid on the complex TSP, and the multilevel reduction strategy can contribute to develop the ability of PSO when facing up to the complex and large scale problems greatly.

Detecting and characterizing the community structure of complex network and social network is fundamental problem. Many of the proposed algorithm for detecting community based on modularity Q which fail to identify modules smaller than a scale community. In this paper, authors propose a new community detection algorithm based on genetic algorithm and modularity density (D value). We test our method on classical social networks whose community structure is already known and the results can be much easier compared with the method. Experiments show the capability of the method to successfully detect the community structure.
