Clarifying the dynamic buckling behavior of PWR steel reactor containment vessels (PWR-CVs) subject to seismic excitation is critical for improving a numerical seismic design scheme for PWR-CVs. In evaluating the static elastic-plastic buckling strength for PWR-CVs by a finite element (FE) analysis, first we compute the moments and axial forces acting onto the multiple lumped mass beam model of a targeted PWR-CV from the linear dynamic analysis, second using the buckling evaluation formula on JEAG 4601 addenda-1984 we calculate the equivalent static load distributions in terms of shear and axial forces as input loads to the FE model. This static FE buckling analysis for a PWR-CV idealizes dynamic buckling phenomena as be static phenomena, so we cannot basically consider the effects of dynamic behavior on the buckling strength of a PWR-CV. To tackle more realistic buckling assessment of a PWR-CV, we carried out the linear dynamic analysis for a PWR-CV FE numerical model and discussed the features of the response considering the oval vibration modes. It was revealed that the response accompanying the oval vibration modes showed the lower value compared with that from the static FE buckling analysis. In contrast, in a previous study by Hidaka et al., 2022, it was discussed that the buckling load of static FE buckling analysis for a PWR-CV is higher than the buckling load of buckling evaluation formula on JEAG4601. As a result, the ratio of buckling load to response in the linear dynamic FE analysis was within 3% of that in the static FE buckling analysis. © 2023 by JSME.

We study the Traffic Light Control (TLC) problem for a single intersection, considering both straight driving vehicle flows and corresponding crossing pedestrian flows with the goal of achieving a fair jointly optimal sharing policy in terms of average waiting times. Using a stochastic hybrid system model, we design a quasi-dynamic policy controlling the traffic light cycles with several threshold parameters applied to the light cycles and the partially observed contents of vehicle and pedestrian queues. Infinitesimal Perturbation Analysis (IPA) is then used to derive a data-driven gradient estimator of a cost metric with respect to the policy parameters and to iteratively adjust these parameters through an online gradient-based algorithm in order to improve overall performance on this intersection and adapt the policy to changing traffic conditions. The controller is applied to a simulated intersection in the town of Veberöd, Sweden, to illustrate the performance of this approach using real traffic data from this intersection.

We develop controllers for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) traversing a single-lane roundabout so as to simultaneously determine the optimal sequence and associated optimal motion control jointly minimizing travel time and energy consumption while providing speed-dependent safety guarantees, as well as satisfying velocity and acceleration constraints. This is achieved by integrating (a) Model Predictive Control (MPC) to enable receding horizon optimization with (b) Control Lyapunov-Barrier Functions (CLBFs) to guarantee convergence to a safe set in finite time, thus providing an extended stability region compared to the use of classic Control Barrier Functions (CBFs). The proposed MPC-CLBF framework addresses both infeasibility and myopic control issues commonly encountered when controlling CAVs over multiple interconnected control zones in a traffic network, which has been a limitation of prior work on CAVs going through roundabouts, while still providing safety guarantees. Simulations under varying traffic demands demonstrate the controller’s effectiveness and stability.

The increasingly stringent performance requirement in integrated circuit manufacturing, characterized by smaller feature sizes and higher productivity, necessitates the wafer stage executing a extreme motion with the accuracy in terms of nanometers. This demanding requirement witnesses a widespread application of iterative learning control(ILC), given the repetitive nature of wafer scanning. ILC enables substantial performance improvement by using past measurement data in combination with the system model knowledge. However, challenges arise in cases where the data is contaminated by the stochastic noise, or when the system model exhibits significant uncertainties, constraining the achievable performance. In response to this issue, an extended state observer(ESO) based adaptive ILC approach is proposed in the frequency *** being model-based, it utilizes only a rough system model and then compensates for the resulting model uncertainties using an ESO, thereby achieving high robustness against uncertainties with minimal modeling effort. Additionally, an adaptive learning law is developed to mitigate the limited performance in the presence of stochastic noise, yielding high convergence accuracy yet without compromising convergence speed. Simulation and experimental comparisons with existing model-based and data-driven inversion-based ILC validate the effectiveness as well as the superiority of the proposed method.

Data streams represent real-world concepts that typically cannot be assumed to be static. Instead, sensors monitoring industrial resources deteriorate, network intrusion attacks exhibit new patterns, consumer behavior or public interest in news topics change. These are examples of a phenomenon commonly known as concept drift. It threatens the performance of estimation models conducting inference on associated data. Explicitly employed concept drift detection is among the most promising approaches to maintain a stable and robust performance of productively used estimators, as it identifies the times when adaptation to new concepts becomes actually necessary. Combining concept drift detectors to form ensembles can additionally increase detection performance as it aggregates their individual specializations and allows advanced processing of concept drift evidence. This survey is the first to systematically retrieve and overview research relevant in the field of concept drift detection ensembles. It identifies the research as being in its initial stages and reveals numerous gaps, which should be addressed to further exploit the substantial performance potential ensembles have over individually applied detectors. Furthermore, it contributes to the literature by discussing and describing key characteristics and principles of their design in a structured manner. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper investigates the trajectory tracking control problem for wheeled mobile robots (WMRs) and proposes a novel Lyapunov-based model predictive control (LMPC) strategy. By incorporating the Lyapunov direct method into the model predictive control (MPC) framework, optimal control signals are obtained to achieve accurate trajectory tracking. The proposed method utilizes the Lyapunov direct method to design the control laws, and then incorporate the control laws into the optimization problem to construct the contractive constraint. Based on the contractive constraint, the stability of the controlled system is ensured. Besides, the recursive feasibility of the LMPC problem is analyzed and guaranteed by ensuring that the auxiliary control laws satisfy the input limitations. Finally, simulations and real-time experiments are conducted to verify the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2024 IEEE.

A comparative study of various combination strategies for landslide susceptibility mapping considering landslide types

Landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) assists planners, local administrations, and decision-makers in preventing, mitigating and managing associated risks. This study proposes a novel DES-based framework that effectively captures the spatial developmental patterns of different landslide types, leading to higher precision LSM. The Wanzhou district (administrative division) of Chongqing Province, southwestern China, was selected as the test area, encompassing 881 landslides classified into rockfalls, reservoir-affected (RA) landslides, and non-reservoir-affected (NRA) landslides. Subsequently, three inventory maps and sixteen environment factors were used as inputs, with multicollinearity and importance analyses used to select the best factor combination for three types of landslides. Finally, the susceptibilities of rockfalls, RA and NRA landslides were combined by six combination strategies: Maximum, Mean, Probability, Voting, Stacking, and Dynamic Ensemble Selection (DES) models, and the optimal strategy was identified by area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC), confusion matrix, and landslide distribution statistic. For LSM of individual landslide types, ResNet consistently outperformed traditional machine learning models, achieving testing AUC values of 0.8925, 0.9427, and 0.6754 for rockfalls, RA, and NRA landslides, respectively. The evaluation of the combination strategies revealed that the DES model achieved the highest testing AUC value of 0.8779, followed by Stacking (0.8728), Maximum (0.8704), Probability (0.8669), and Voting (0.8653), whereas the widely-used Mean method performed the worst (0.8503), even lower than the non-classified LSM (0.8587). The findings offer a robust approach for mitigating future landslide risks and minimizing their adverse impacts, providing valuable insights for geohazard management and decision-making.

Optimal Merging Control of an Autonomous Vehicle in Mixed Traffic: an Optimal Index Policy

We consider the problem of a single Autonomous Vehicle (AV) merging into traffic consisting only of Human Driven Vehicles (HDVs) with the goal of minimizing both the travel time and energy consumption of the entire group of vehicles involved in the merging process. This is done by controlling only the AV and determining both the optimal merging sequence and the optimal AV trajectory associated with it. We derive an optimal index policy which prescribes the merging position of the AV within the group of HDVs. We also specify conditions under which the optimal index corresponds to the AV merging before all HDVs or after all HDVs, in which case no interaction of the AV with the HDVs is required. Simulation results are included to validate the optimal index policy and demonstrate cases where optimal merging can be achieved without requiring any explicit assumptions regarding human driving behavior.
