Lensless imaging systems capture images without the need for traditional lenses. Instead, they employ flat and thin micro-optical devices, such as masks, diffusers, Fresnel zone plates, and other diffractive optical elements, to capture information-encoded images of imaging targets, and rely on advanced computational methods to reconstruct regular images from the encoded ones. Typical image reconstructions in lensless imaging utilize compressive sensing and sophisticated iterative optimization algorithms. Recently such iterative methods have been replaced by deep neural networks. However, in both approaches the cost (or loss) functions usually are defined on certain simple mathematical distance metric, without considering the inherent perceptive properties of images. In this report, a new method is proposed to construct cost functions for image reconstruction in lensless imaging. It is based on a visual perception model of image phase congruency, a measure of the consistency of the phase information across different spatial orientations and scales in images. The proposed method is demonstrated to provide improved image reconstruction quality using more than 200 encoded images from a virtual lensless imaging system with a Fresnel zone plate, as well a small number of encoded images from a physical one with an optical diffuser. © 2023 IEEE.

Decentralized applications are increasingly recognized as efficient tools to overcome security challenges in the management of highly sensitive health information. However, research still lacks the understanding of how to address the complex security challenges in the design of health data management applications (HDMAs). In this study, we structurally analyzed security requirements of health data management systems to improve the efficiency of their design. We leveraged threat modeling to inform the design of HDMAs and proposed the system architecture accordingly to facilitate the security of interorganizational health data exchange. Our results contribute to the exaptation of threat modeling to the innovative design of decentralized applications for health data management and to the exploration of benefits of decentralization for healthcare. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In the aerospace industry, there are standard design principles and/or rule-of-thumb targets that define healthy levels of margins required at each developmental milestone for traditional metrics, such as mass, thermal, and power margins. When the technical resource is "non-traditional," in the sense that guiding margin principles are non-existent, systems engineering processes are required to internally generate performance targets and methodologies to assess the system against the derived targets. This paper presents a probabilistic approach for assessing complex time-critical operations which applies global sensitivity analyses to identify input parameters that should drive the design. This approach is used to design a critical payload required for the Mars Sample Return campaign aiming at bringing back rock and atmospheric samples from Mars. © 2024 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. Defecation disorders in patients with neurological diseases significantly diminish their quality of life. The primary cause of this dysfunction is neurogenic dysmotility of the anorectum and the core muscles. Previous treatment programs targeting anorectal and core motility have yielded only temporary improvements or have been of limited clinical efficacy. In this study, we focused on cybernics treatment, where a wearable cyborg facilitates voluntary movement in paralyzed body parts, thereby the sensory feedback from paralyzed periphery induces neural plasticity. A distinctive feature of cybernics treatment is its potential for sustained clinical effects, even after the doffing the wearable device, suggesting ongoing improvement. We proposed a novel approach using this treatment modality for the anorectum and core muscles that could potentially restore defecation function permanently post-treatment. We developed a wearable system designed to enable voluntary core muscle actions based on the wearer's motor intentions. These intentions were detected by measuring bio-electrical signals (BES) from surface electrodes placed at the fusion site of the internal oblique and transversus abdominis (IO-TrA). We employed hip flexion while lying supine as the movement to activate the core muscles. The feasibility of this system was tested in an experiment involving three able-bodied participants. During the trials, we compared the time series of participants' hip joint angles and electrical activities in the core muscles while performing hip flexion using the developed system. The results showed that hip flexion was effectively synchronized with electrical activities in the core muscles across all participants, demonstrating the feasibility of the developed system for able-bodied wearers.

The coexistence of coherent perfect absorber and laser or amplifier (CPAL) point is a peculiar spectral singularity associated with the scattering matrices of non-Hermitian systems. While the potential of CPAL systems for sensing application has been highlighted recently, the extreme sensitivity of parity-time (PT)-symmetric CPAL devices to the input signal deviations has so far impeded their practical utilization. Here we explore a strategy for implementing CPAL circuits by exploiting another type of non-Hermitian symmetry, namely anti-PT (APT) symmetry. We demonstrate that the condition for building CPAL in our proposed APT-symmetric electronic circuits additionally requires parity symmetry, which simplifies the circuit design and implementation. Additionally, we show that this newly proposed structure is 1.85 times more robust compared to previous CPAL devices studied in the literature.

In this paper, an ultra-wideband BOR-SPR antenna with an antenna height of 0.07 λL(λL.: free-space wavelength at 2 GHz) is proposed. It is found that a VSWR of less than 3 is obtained across a frequency range of 2-18 GHz (a fractional bandwidth of 160%). The proposed antenna radiates a conical beam. The antenna gain is more than -1 \dBi. © 2024 IEEE.

The rapid growth of urban areas, population, and pollution presents a significant environmental challenge. Addressing these challenges requires innovative analytical approaches and data sources. This study focuses on the three-scale phenomena of the environmental system, physical environment, and regional surroundings, considering their implications on a global network scale. Remote sensing data, with its easy accessibility, offers new toolkits and methods to improve the global environment. It provides self-consistent measurements of vital physical attributes and surpasses traditional data sources regarding accuracy, efficiency, and coverage of larger geographical areas. This study aims to identify and analyze appropriate satellite image analysis tools for healthcare. The study objectives include studying available tools, analyzing their features, categorizing tools into open-source and commercial categories, and providing recommendations. This study emphasizes feature extraction and image enhancement parameters, which are crucial for image analysis. Power Imbalance Analysis and Minimum Imbalance Power Based Power Balance Control for Nonagonal MMC in FFTS-Based Offshore Wind Farm

Nonagonal modular multilevel converter (MMC) can achieve three-port direct AC-AC conversion and has good low frequency performance. Additionally, due to its highly branch-reused structure, it is advantageous in cost and size for the application in FFTS-based offshore wind farm. However, the instantaneous power of the branches in nonagonal MMC has an inherent DC component which would result in power imbalance and system instability. The traditional way to suppress the imbalance power is to insert DC neutral point bias voltages and indirectly generating a DC component in circulating current. Together, they can offset the imbalance power. Nonetheless, this would significantly increase the voltage and current stress of converter switching devices and hence weakening its advantages in cost. To address this issue, the generating mechanism of power imbalance is analyzed by comparing nonagonal MMC with other power balanced converters. The formerly neglected phase angle difference of the same frequency ports is also considered and is proved to have a significant influence on the overall imbalance power. Accordingly, a parameter adjustment method is proposed to obtain minimum imbalance power for nonagonal MMC. The effectiveness of the parameter adjustment method is verified by RTlab results, and the overall imbalance power can be reduced by as great as 99.35%. © 2025 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

In 2023, Turkiye faced a series of devastating earthquakes and these earthquakes affected millions of people due to damaged constructions. These earthquakes demonstrated the urgent need for advanced automated damage detection models to help people. This study introduces a novel solution to address this challenge through the AttentionPoolMobileNeXt model, derived from a modified MobileNetV2 architecture. To rigorously evaluate the effectiveness of the model, we meticulously curated a dataset comprising instances of construction damage classified into five distinct classes. Upon applying this dataset to the AttentionPoolMobileNeXt model, we obtained an accuracy of 97%. In this work, we have created a dataset consisting of five distinct damage classes, and achieved 97% test accuracy using our proposed AttentionPoolMobileNeXt model. Additionally, the study extends its impact by introducing the AttentionPoolMobileNeXt-based Deep Feature engineering (DFE) model, further enhancing the classification performance and interpretability of the system. The presented DFE significantly increased the test classification accuracy from 90.17% to 97%, yielding improvement over the baseline model. AttentionPoolMobileNeXt and its DFE counterpart collectively contribute to advancing the state-of-the-art in automated damage detection, offering valuable insights for disaster response and recovery efforts. © The Author(s) 2024.
