We have developed a visual programming tool called SmrAI for function testing, and investigated whether wrapping existing source code with Scratch Blocks is an effective means of mitigating the shortage of programming personnel in the manufacturing. SmrAI is based on Smalruby, which can convert Scratch Blocks into Ruby code. In addition, SmrAI introduces two new sets of Blocks that wrap existing Ruby libraries for function testing. Since existing tools and libraries were utilized, the cost of developing SmrAI was low, and there were no changes in the function testing procedure. We conducted a verification test using staff members who were familiar with the function testing process but had little or no programming experience, and confirmed that they were able to program using SmrAI and that they had confidence in its business applications. These results are expected to contribute to the diversification and increase of programming personnel responsible for function test programming. © 2022 Japan Society for Software Science and Technology. Parallel Domain-Decomposition Algorithms for Complexity Certification of Branch-and-Bound Algorithms for Mixed-Integer Linear and Quadratic Programming

When implementing model predictive control (MPC) for hybrid systems with a linear or a quadratic performance measure, a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) or a mixed-integer quadratic program (MIQP) needs to be solved, respectively, at each sampling instant. Recent work has introduced the possibility to certify the computational complexity of branch-and-bound (B&B) algorithms when solving MILP and MIQP problems formulated as multi-parametric MILPs (mp-MILPs) and mp-MIQPs. Such a framework allows for computing the worst-case computational complexity of standard B&B-based MILP and MIQP solvers, quantified by metrics such as the total number of LP/QP iterations and B&B nodes. These results are highly relevant for real-time hybrid MPC applications. In this paper, we extend this framework by developing parallel, domain-decomposition versions of the previously proposed algorithm, allowing it to scale to larger problem sizes and enable the use of high-performance computing (HPC) resources. Furthermore, to reduce peak memory consumption, we introduce two novel modifications to the existing (serial) complexity certification framework, integrating them into the proposed parallel algorithms. Numerical experiments show that the parallel algorithms significantly reduce computation time while maintaining the correctness of the original framework. © 2025, CC BY.

A Unifying Complexity-Certification Framework for Branch-and-Bound Algorithms for Mixed-Integer Linear and Quadratic Programming

In model predictive control (MPC) for hybrid systems, solving optimization problems efficiently and with guarantees on worst-case computational complexity is critical to satisfy the real-time constraints in these applications. These optimization problems often take the form of mixed-integer linear programs (MILPs) or mixed-integer quadratic programs (MIQPs) that depend on system parameters. A common approach for solving such problems is the branch-and-bound (B&B) method. This paper extends existing complexity certification methods by presenting a unified complexity-certification framework for B&B-based MILP and MIQP solvers, specifically for the family of multi-parametric MILP and MIQP problems that arise in, e.g., hybrid MPC applications. The framework provides guarantees on worst-case computational measures, including the maximum number of iterations or relaxations B&B algorithms require to reach optimality. It systematically accounts for different branching and node selection strategies, as well as heuristics integrated into B&B, ensuring a comprehensive certification framework. By offering theoretical guarantees and practical insights for solver customization, the proposed framework enhances the reliability of B&B for real-time application. The usefulness of the proposed framework is demonstrated through numerical experiments on both random MILPs and MIQPs, as well as on MIQPs arising from a hybrid MPC problem. © 2025, CC BY.

Underwater acoustic wave propagation time delay and fluctuations are much greater than radio waves. However, many of the protocols used for underwater acoustic networking and communication are designed according to the principles of terrestrial wireless communication networks, failing to give full consideration to utilizing the underwater acoustic propagation and its time delay variation. For this reason, this article proposes an adaptive varying contention window media access control (AVCW-MAC) protocol based on propagation delay. The protocol uses AVCW random backoff mechanism to differently set up the CW of each node based on the different propagation delays from each underwater sensor node to the cluster head node to improve the channel utilization. In addition, to avoid excessive difference in the CW of each node, the backoff factors K1 and K2 are introduced in the AVCW random backoff mechanism to improve the fairness of nodes' accessing the channel. Simulation results show that for the same amount of sensor nodes, the AVCW-MAC protocol has significantly improved network throughput and decreased average end-to-end latency when compared to legacy CW-MAC protocols. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

The trajectory tracking control task is of vital importance to the USV control system, especially when it is under-actuated. Focusing on the problem that the USV system model identification is difficult and the lateral motion control is usually affected by the environmental disturbance, we propose a novel USV trajectory tracking method that combines the control law with a data-driven state prediction algorithm. Due to the fact that the yaw of USV is usually calculated by a simplified dynamic model according to other state variables, accurate trajectory tracking control becomes quite difficult. Therefore, we replace the yaw calculation with a learning-based method based on the multi-sensor data captured from the USV in real-time. Our method takes the environmental factors into account while calculating the yaw variable. Simulation experiments are conducted and the comparison of 5 experimental data in the straight line and turning conditions shows that the average lateral displacement MSE error is reduced by 70.86% and 78.4% respectively compared with the model calculation method. The average tracking accuracy RMSE decreased by 43.47% and 42.31%, indicating the effectiveness of the method. © 2023 IEEE.

Independent excretion is crucial for maintaining self-worth among individuals. Toilet care significantly reduces the quality of life for care receivers while imposing physical and mental burdens on caregivers. Even if care receivers can move to toilets using a walker independently, they often require assistance with dressing and undressing their lower garments, such as trousers and underwear. A walker that assists with dressing and undressing lower garments could not only safely increase opportunities for independent walking to prevent disuse in any place, but it could also reduce the burden of caregivers. The purpose of this study is to develop the lower garments dressing and undressing portable support system attached to a walker and used by the care-receiver with independent gait function to support their daily toilet activity with dignity. In addition, we confirmed the basic performance of independent dressing and undressing using the basic experiment. The system comprised three units: the weight support, lower garment stretching, and lower garment up-and-down units. The weight support unit assisted the user in walking and maintaining a standing posture. The lower garment stretching unit comprised the lazy tong mechanism, which stretches the waistband of the lower garments on hooks by extending the mechanism to perform friction-based holding and reduce friction between the skin and lower garments during dressing and undressing. The lower garment up-and-down unit raises and lowers the lower garments, which are held by the lower garment stretching unit. The lower garment stretching unit and up-and-down unit were attached to both sides of the weight support unit. We conducted a basic experiment involving a series of dressing and undressing movements in the toilet with one of the authors of this study to confirm the basic performance of the system. Misdelivery in logistic services leads to increased costs and degradation of packages. For deliveries using trucks, erroneous deliveries are prevented by checking identification numbers on packages as the packages pass through delivery points. In recent years, it has become possible to monitor real-time location by attaching GPS receivers to packages, but few concrete efforts have been made to detect anomalies using truck transport data. This study introduces a basic framework for the detection of misdeliveries and a summary of the problems in actual truck misdelivery using special medical supply delivery data provided by a major Japanese logistics company. It is shown that the system can detect erroneous deliveries with high accuracy, even for actual delivery data with coarse resolution owing to the cost of installing the equipment. This study has the potential not only to improve logistics and reduce costs, but also to solve various social problems such as driver shortages. © 2023 IEEE.
