Eco-driving Incentive Mechanisms for Mitigating Emissions in Urban Transportation

This paper proposes incentive mechanisms that promote eco-driving in transportation networks with the overarching objective of minimizing emissions. The transportation system operator provides the drivers with energy-efficient driving guidance throughout their trips, and their eco-driving levels are measured by how closely they follow this guidance via vehicle telematics. Drivers choose their eco-driving levels to optimize a combination of their travel times and their emissions. To obtain optimal budget allocation and recommendations for the incentive mechanism, the system operator gathers drivers’ preferences, or types, to assess each driver’s trip urgency and natural willingness to eco-drive. In a setting where drivers truthfully report their types, we introduce the first-best incentive mechanism and show that the obedience condition holds (i.e., drivers find it optimal to comply with the system operator’s recommendations) when the recommended eco-driving profile constitutes a Nash equilibrium. Moreover, in a setting where drivers can strategically report their types, we introduce the second-best incentive mechanism and show that the proposed mechanism is incentive-compatible (i.e., drivers find it optimal to be truthful). Under this mechanism, we also show that all equilibrium outcomes are at least as good as the recommended eco-driving profile in terms of the system operator’s objective. Overall, this work offers a framework for designing eco-driving incentive mechanisms while considering both the strategic behavior of individual drivers and the network effects of collective decision-making. © 2024, CC BY.

Online learning platforms are crucial today to ensure uninterrupted teaching and learning. Lecturers upload recorded lectures on these platforms, aiding students having connectivity issues and supporting distance education. However, these lecture recordings are often too lengthy to efficiently navigate to the most attentional content, which includes essential information provided in the lecture. This study proposes a new method to navigate lengthy videos by automatically identifying the most attentional content in video lectures. It would be a better alternative to the existing findings, such as text search in the audio transcript or manual video pausing. Three sub-questions drove the research: what are lecturers’ most common techniques to emphasise the most attentional content, how can these techniques be identified in slides, and how can a navigational structure be created to access the most attentional content in video lectures? The research employed a constructive research approach. It started with a questionnaire to uncover lecturers’ common techniques, such as text highlighting, underlining, and writing on the slides to denote the most attentional content. The study included a comparative analysis of existing image processing techniques such as Contour Detection, Canny Edge Detection, and Probabilistic Hough Line Transformation, and a machine learning object detection model named EfficientDet DO 512x512 to identify the most attentional content in video frames. The findings revealed that the object detection model was more effective in identifying the most attentional content. Finally, the research employed a strategy involving video frame capturing, slide transition detection, tagging video frames with timestamps, and relevant transcribed words to generate the navigation structure. The findings demonstrated that the navigation structure could effectively locate slides containing the most attentional content with high precision values. Hence, this research can

Towards Robust Multimodal Representation: A Unified Approach with Adaptive Experts and Alignment

Healthcare relies on multiple types of data, such as medical images, genetic information, and clinical records, to improve diagnosis and treatment. However, missing data is a common challenge due to privacy restrictions, cost, and technical issues, making many existing multi-modal models unreliable. To address this, we propose a new multimodel model called Mixture of Experts, Symmetric Aligning, and Reconstruction (MoSARe), a deep learning framework that handles incomplete multimodal data while maintaining high accuracy. MoSARe integrates expert selection, cross-modal attention, and contrastive learning to improve feature representation and decision-making. Our results show that MoSARe outperforms existing models in situations when the data is complete. Furthermore, it provides reliable predictions even when some data are missing. This makes it especially useful in real-world healthcare settings, including resource-limited environments. Our code is publicly available at MoSARe. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

The sampling rate of input and output signals is known to play a critical role in the identification and control of dynamical systems. For slow-sampled continuous-time systems that do not satisfy the Nyquist-Shannon sampling condition for perfect signal reconstructability, careful consideration is required when identifying parametric and nonparametric models. In this letter, a comprehensive statistical analysis of estimators under slow sampling is performed. Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for unbiased estimates of the frequency response function beyond the Nyquist frequency, and it is shown that consistency of parametric estimators can be achieved even if input frequencies overlap after aliasing. Independent excretion is crucial for maintaining self-worth among individuals. Toilet care significantly reduces the quality of life for care receivers while imposing physical and mental burdens on caregivers. Even if care receivers can move to toilets using a walker independently, they often require assistance with dressing and undressing their lower garments, such as trousers and underwear. A walker that assists with dressing and undressing lower garments could not only safely increase opportunities for independent walking to prevent disuse in any place, but it could also reduce the burden of caregivers. The purpose of this study is to develop the lower garments dressing and undressing portable support system attached to a walker and used by the care-receiver with independent gait function to support their daily toilet activity with dignity. In addition, we confirmed the basic performance of independent dressing and undressing using the basic experiment. The system comprised three units: the weight support, lower garment stretching, and lower garment up-and-down units. The weight support unit assisted the user in walking and maintaining a standing posture. The lower garment stretching unit comprised the lazy tong mechanism, which stretches the waistband of the lower garments on hooks by extending the mechanism to perform friction-based holding and reduce friction between the skin and lower garments during dressing and undressing. The lower garment up-and-down unit raises and lowers the lower garments, which are held by the lower garment stretching unit. The lower garment stretching unit and up-and-down unit were attached to both sides of the weight support unit. We conducted a basic experiment involving a series of dressing and undressing movements in the toilet with one of the authors of this study to confirm the basic performance of the system. Worldwide, cities grapple with the expectation of putting the brakes on climate change. Before acting, smart districts often serve as a testing bed for strategies towards carbon-neutrality. If effective, scale-up agendas at city-level are formulated. Smart districts are touted for their sustainability lever, as their core rationale is encouraging residents to use ‘smart energy technologies’ which increase efficiency or integrate renewable energy sources. The primary focus of these districts is on technical implementations of available sustainability services instead of orienting their service-portfolio around citizens. The result is a mismatch of supply and demand of sustainability-inducing services. We take in a customer journey perspective when searching for literature and conducting qualitative interviews. Results reveal a framework for mapping service touchpoints into citizen journeys. The framework is meant to benefit district planners to tailor their service selection to meet their citizens’ needs and exploit the district’s sustainability potential at the citizen interface. © 2022 17th International Conference on Wirtschaftsinformatik, WI 2022. Biliary strictures are characterized by the narrowing of the bile duct lumen,usually caused by surgical biliary injury,cancer,inflammation,and scarring from *** stent placement is a well-established method for the management of biliary ***,maintaining optimal mechanical properties of stents and designing surfaces that can prevent stent-induced tissue hyperplasia and biofilm formation are challenges in the fabrication of biodegradable biliary stents(BBSs)for customized *** study proposes a novel approach to fabricating functionalized polymer BBSs with nanoengineered surfaces using 3D *** 3D printed stents,fabricated from bioactive silica poly(ε-carprolactone)(PCL)via a sol-gel method,exhibited tunable mechanical properties suitable for supporting the bile duct while ensuring ***,a nanoengineered surface layer was successfully created on a sirolimus(SRL)-coated functionalized PCL(fPCL)stent using Zn ion sputtering-based plasma immersion ion implantation(S-PIII)treatment to enhance the performance of the *** nanoengineered surface of the SRL-coated fPCL stent effectively reduced bacterial responses and remarkably inhibited fibroblast proliferation and initial burst release of SRL in vitro *** physicochemical properties and biological behaviors,including in vitro biocompatibility and in vivo therapeutic efficacy in the rabbit bile duct,of the Zn-SRL@fPCL stent demonstrated its potential as a versatile platform for clinical applications in bile duct tissue engineering.

The outbreak of the recent Covid-19 pandemic changed many aspects of our daily life, such as the constant wearing of face masks as protection from virus transmission risks. Furthermore, it exposed the healthcare system’s fragilities, showing the urgent need to design a more inclusive model that takes into account possible future emergencies, together with population’s aging and new severe pathologies. In this framework, face masks can be both a physical barrier against viruses and, at the same time, a telemedical diagnostic tool. In this paper, we propose a low-cost, 3D-printed face mask able to protect the wearer from virus transmission, thanks to internal FFP2 filters, and to monitor the air quality (temperature, humidity, CO2) inside the mask. Acquired data are automatically transmitted to a web terminal, thanks to sensors and electronics embedded in the mask. Our preliminary results encourage more efforts in these regards, towards rapid, inexpensive and smart ways to integrate more sensors into the mask’s breathing zone in order to use the patient’s breath as a fingerprint for various diseases. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
