In this paper, we propose a new distance learning system that can adapt to various styles of learning activity. We assume that the system is used in distance classes with multiple live-streaming videos. Our system has functions to change the screen layout to best suit for the current learning situation for each of the participants in a class. The system also has a function to efficiently monitor the behavior of many students at a time. These functions enable us to adapt various learning activities in distance learning classes. We implemented a prototype of the proposed system and evaluated it in experimental classes. We confirmed that our system improved the activities in the experimental classes.

In this paper, different from the conventional admittance control, an originally negative admittance control, in which two virtual parameters, virtual damping coefficient and virtual moment of inertia, are negative, is developed to support the movement of human's upper extremity only by agonist's EMG signals. First, we empirically determine two agonists, biceps brachii and clavicular part of deltoid to get their EMGs respectively as the control signals for elbow joint and shoulder joint. Then a negative admittance control is developed to support the movement of human's upper extremity for holding up, keeping and holding down a load only by agonist's EMG signals. The experiments demonstrate that seamless movements of holding up, keeping and holding down a heavy load is successfully realized. The experimental results show that the performance of the negative admittance control can be arbitrarily adjusted by control parameters and user's "load feeling" can be arbitrarily reduced.

information processing in the brain or other decision making systems, such as in multimedia, involves fusion of information from multiple sensors, sources, and systems at the data, feature or decision level. Combinatorial Fusion Analysis (CFA), a recently developed information fusion paradigm, uses a combinatorial method to model the decision space and the Rank-Score Characteristic (RSC) function to measure cognitive diversity. In this paper, we first introduce CFA and its practice in a variety of application domains such as computer vision and target tracking, information retrieval and Internet search, and virtual screening and drug discovery. We then apply CFA to investigate gender variation in facial attractiveness judgment on three tasks: liking, beauty and mentalization using RSC function. It is demonstrated that the RSC function is useful in the differentiation of gender variation and task judgment, and hence can be used to complement the notion of correlation which is widely used in statistical decision making. In addition, it is shown that CFA is a viable approach to deal with various issues and problems in brain informatics. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

An efficient hybrid clustering algorithm for customer segmentation in mobile e-commerce

This paper presents a hybrid clustering algorithm to be used for customer segmentation classifications in a mobile e-commerce environment. The proposed algorithm, named KSP, is based on three well know clustering algorithms: the K-means, SOM and PSO. We first applied those algorithms directly to a mobile customer segmentation problem using data collected from a well established restaurant chain which has operations throughout Japan. The results from the classifications were compared with the existing company customer segmentation data for verifications. Based on our initial analysis, special characteristics from those three algorithms were extracted and modified in our KSP method which performed extremely well with mobile e-commerce applications. Our result is 17.08% and 7.56% more accurate than that of K-means and SOM respectively. ICIC International © 2011.

Leptin is well known to be involved in the inhibition of feeding, hermogenesis, reproduction, and neuroendocrine functions through its actions on the rodent's hypothalamic receptors. Leptin facilitated the presynaptic transmitter release and postsynaptic sensitivity to the transmitters in the hippocampal CA1 neurons. Thus, long-term potentiation (LTP) and the phosphorylation of Ca²⁺/calmodulin protein kinase II (CaMK II) were facilitated in the CA1 neurons. Therefore behavioral performance related to spatial learning and memory was improved by leptin in vivo applications. Orexin-A produced by glucose-sensitive neurons in the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) and released during food intake facilitates feeding. Orexin-A suppressed LTP and CaMK II phosphorylation without affecting the presynaptic transmitter release. Therefore behavioral performance on learning and memory was impaired. The present studies suggest that leptin and orexin signalings in the brain may have important implications for cognitive function. © 2011 Springer science+Business Media, Inc.

The aim of this study is to describe a new method for three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of coronary arteries using Frequency Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (FDOCT) images. The rationale is to fuse the information about the curvature of the artery, derived from biplane angiographies, with the information regarding the lumen wall, which is produced from the FD-OCT examination. The method is based on a three step approach. In the first step the lumen borders in FD-OCT images are detected. In the second step a 3D curve is produced using the center line of the vessel from the two biplane projections. Finally in the third step the detected lumen borders are placed perpendicularly onto the path based on the centroid of each lumen border. The result is a 3D reconstructed artery produced by all the lumen borders of the FD-OCT pullback representing the 3D arterial geometry of the vessel.

Extracting environmental constraints to make reactive system specifications realizable

Many fatal accidents of safety critical reactive systems have occurred in unexpected situations which had not been considered during design and test phases of the systems. To prevent these accidents, reactive systems should be designed to respond appropriately to any requests of any timing from their environments. Verifying this property in specification phase reduces the development costs of safety critical reactive systems. This property of a specification is well known as realizability. If a specification was found not to be realizable, we have to determine the flaws in the unrealizable specification. Unrealizability of a specification arises from arbitrary requirements given by system designers. From a different point of view, it can be thought that the unrealizable specification implicitly imposes a precondition on the behavior of environment, which a system can not control. If it is possible to obtain the precondition in intuitively comprehensive forms, this makes it easy for system designers to understand the cause of flaws in specifications. In this paper, we propose methods for deriving constraints on the behavior of environments, which is implicitly imposed by unrealizable specifications. Instead of realizability, we use strong satisfiability which is a necessary condition for realizability, due to the fact that many practical unrealizable specifications are also strongly unsatisfiable, and strong satisfiability have the advantage of lower complexity for analysis against realizability. These methods derive constraints in propositional linear temporal logic from Büchi automata representing specifications. The expressions of derived constraints are limited to simple and intuitively comprehensive forms where only two temporal operators appear successively. We give proofs for three correctness properties of our methods, i.e. the termination property, the soundness property, and the weakest constraints derivability. The effects of silanising using the coupling agent γ-glycidoxpropyltrimethoxysilane on microstructural stability and magnetic properties of Sm-Co powder particles have been investigated. The silanisation provides structural stability by improving the oxidation resistance at 400oC for 10 hours. The untreated particles undergo microchemical changes by redistribution of alloying elements which mainly accumulate in parallel black and grey streaks in the interior of the particles. The silanised particles after heat treatment show coercivity of 836 Oe and the untreated particles show a much lower coercivity of 376 Oe. The difference in magnetic properties of uncoated particles is caused by diffusion of oxygen and microstructural instability.

We address the optimal sink scheduling problem in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The problem is inherently difficult since sink scheduling and data routing are tightly coupled. Previous approaches either have questionable performance due to no joint considerations, or are based on relaxed constraints. Our aim is to fill in this blank in the research. First, by discretizing continuous time, we develop a novel bound technique to connect time-varying routes with the placement of sinks. This bounding technique transforms time-related constraints into pattern-based ones and allows us to mathematically formulate this optimization in a pattern-based way. The complexity of directly solving this optimization is intractable; therefore, on the basis of column generation (CG), a computationally efficient algorithm is developed to reduce the complexity by decomposing the problem into sub-problems and iteratively solving them to approach optimality. Simulations demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm and substantiate the importance of sink mobility in energy-constrained sensor networks.

The future success of the Smart Grid (SG) depends on many technological developments and innovations being created. The SG will be characterized by decentralized generation, improved network communications, demand response, greater reliability and robustness to failures. The future power grid will also have many interacting components needing greater capabilities to coordinate and manage power and information flows in as an efficient manner as possible. Though many power distribution engineering and analysis tools have been developed to operate the grid in a real-time manner, there are still areas requiring improved systems integration and decision-making. One such critical area that has great opportunity for improvement is at the interface between Distribution Management systems (DMS) operated by distribution utilities and Energy Management systems (EMS) operated by end consumers. This paper proposes the development of a set of technologies in the form of Decision-Guided Self-Architecting (DGSA) Framework whose purpose is to provide integrated, real-time optimal decision support in the common domain that intersects the operations of DMS and EMS. This is a key area requiring attention as the overall grid may be sub-optimized unless there is well-integrated and coordinated, optimal decision-making across the various power generating, distributing, and consuming entities of the SG. In addition, this paper also describes the supporting technologies upon which the framework is based and presents two key applications of the DGSA Framework: Energy Management systems and an Energy Investment Advisor. Also presented are two cases that each illustrate various scenarios for how the framework would be implemented and the type of decisions that would be made with such a framework.
