As a result of improvements in wireless communication technologies, a multimedia data streaming service can be provided for mobile clients such as PDAs and cellular phones. Because mobile devices have low computing power and work on a low network bandwidth, a transcoding technology is needed to adapt the original streaming media for mobile environments. To provide quality of service, original encoded media are transcoded within limited time and transmitted to clients without ceasing and jittering phenomena. In particular, when large-scale mobile clients demand streaming services, load distribution methods among distributed transcoding servers have a tremendous impact on the total number of quality of service streams. In this paper, a new load distribution method is proposed based on transcoding time estimation with transcoding servers' information, movie information and target transcoding bit-rate. In experiments, the proposed method produces the best performance scalability according to the increase of transcoding servers. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper reports application results of Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) for a practical problem. In this paper, a reentrant scheduling problem is considered as a practical problem which has been addressed by our previous works. MCTS introduced by Coulom is a best-first search where the pseudorandom simulations guide the solution of problem. Recent improvements on MCTS have produced strong computer Go program, which has a large search space, and the success is a hot topic for selecting the best move. So far, most of reports about MCTS have been on two-player game, and MCTS has been applied rarely in one-player perfect-information games. MCTS does not need an admissible heuristic, so the application of MCTS for one-player games might be an interesting alternative. Additionally, one-player games like puzzles are determinately operated only by one player's decision, so sequences of changes in state are describable as a network diagram of interdependence of operations. Therefore if MCTS for one-player games is considered as a meta-heuristic algorithm, we can use this algorithm for not only many practical problems, but also combinatorial optimization problems. Especially as MCTS does not fully depend on evaluation function, so the solutions based on MCTS remain effective if objective function of problem is modified. This paper firstly investigated on the application of Single Player MCTS (SP-MCTS) introduced by Schadd et al. Next this paper showed the effectiveness of new simulation strategies on SP-MCTS by numerical experiments. Based on the results, this paper discussed the application potentiality of SP-MCTS for a practical reentrant scheduling problem.

To increase the amount of happiness in our daily life, we must recover ourselves from displeasing emotional states and try to keep to more pleasing emotions. The way for the user to avoid displeasing emotions depends on the category of the emotion, whether it be fear, anger, disgust or sadness. In this study, we focus on emotion recognition for service robots in the living space. An emotional state is important information that allows a robot system to provide appropriate services in way that are more in tune with users' needs and preferences. Moreover, the users' emotional state can be feedbacks to evaluate user's level of satisfaction in the services. We apply a diagnosis method by using analyzed value of biological signals for the emotion recognition. Our system design is based on wireless and wearable physiological sensors for mobility and convenience of users' daily lifestyle.

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are a key part of the current hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) drive system, and the sophisticated performance such as small size, high power density, and high efficiency is required to the PMSMs in the HEV drive system. Therefore, rare earth permanent magnet is generally employed in the PMSMs in order to satisfy those demands. However, rare earth materials contained in the rare earth permanent magnet have several concerns caused by uneven distribution, because the rare earth materials such as neodymium and dysprosium depend on China for 90% or more of the world share. Accordingly, the rare earth materials have the undeniable possibility of sudden rise of price or reinforcement of export restriction. On the other hand, the HEVs tend to be promoted rapidly because of growing concern about environmental problems. Therefore, it is very important to develop rare-earth-free motors for the next generation HEV drive system. This paper proposes a ferrite permanent magnet axial gap motor without the rare earth materials for the HEVs. In addition, the proposed motor structure and the analytical results with the 3D-FEA are introduced.

Today's household appliances are quickly increasing their features and functions. These new technologies require innovative training methods to maintain learning motivation especially with older users, because they may need more time to learn. Conventional manuals are insufficient to maintain motivation in this population. Previously studied assistive communication robots also have difficulty explaining a second device because their strong presence distracts the user from the device during explanation. We propose an anthropomorphized learning method that sustains older people's motivations to learn new technologies. Our method creates an anthropomorphized household appliance using robot eyes and arms. This method assists the learning process using human expressions. These human-like expressions attract users during training and maintain learning motivation. Our system uses three forms of anthropomorphization: pointing, directive motion, and emotion. We designed and implemented both hardware and software and evaluated the method by training older people to learn a vacuum's features. Our method increased older people's emotional status by an average of 2.53 points compared with the manual learning that decreased emotional status by -.53. This increased emotional status suggests that our system could maintain older users' motivation more effectively compared with traditional manual methods.

As efficient utilization of computational resources is increasing, evolutionary technology based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA), Genetic Programming (GP), Evolution Strategy (ES) and other Evolutionary Computations (ECs) is making rapid progress, and its social recognition and the need as applied technology are increasing. This is explained by the facts that EC offers higher robustness for knowledge information processing systems, intelligent production and logistics systems, most advanced production scheduling and other various real-world problems compared to the approaches based on conventional theories, and EC ensures flexible applicability and usefulness for any unknown system environment even in a case where accurate mathematical modeling fails in the formulation. This paper deals with the partial target coverage (PTC) problem in wireless sensor networks with the objective of optimizing network lifetime. We first build a linear programming formulation, which takes total time a sensor spends on covering some targets into consideration, in order to obtain a lifetime upper bound. Then, based on the information of this formulation, we develop a sensor assignment algorithm to seek an optimal time table meeting the lifetime upper bound. A formal proof of optimality is given. We compare the proposed algorithm with a state-of-the-art algorithm: column generation approach and show that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms in terms of computational time. Experiments have been conducted to study the effect of network parameters on network lifetime and interesting insights have been offered.
