The authors have been developing a newly-designed totally-implantable artificial myocardium using a covalent shape-memory alloy fibre (Biometalreg, Toki Corporation), which is attached onto the ventricular wall and is also capable of supporting the natural ventricular contraction. This mechanical system consists of a contraction assistive device, which is made of Ti-Ni alloy. And the phenomenon of the martensitic transformation of the alloy was employed to achieve the physiologic motion of the device. The diameter of the alloy wire could be selected from 45 to 250 mum. In this study, the basic characteristics of the fiber of 150 mum was examined to design the sophisticated mechano-electric myocardium. The stress generated by the fiber was 400 gf under the pulsatile driving condition (0.4W, 1 Hz). Therefore it was indicated that the effective assistance might be achieved by using the Biometal shape-memory alloy fiber

In this paper we estimate the size of the Winny network (one of the most popular pure P2P file sharing applications in Japan) using a combination of network measurements and computer simulation experiments. For the measurement analysis, we use an improved mark-recapture method to estimate the number of newly active Winny peers per unit time. We estimate the number of active peers in the Winny network by applying the actual measurement results to computer simulation experiments. The simulation results reveal that the Winny network had about 200,000 active Winny peers in October 2004.

In this paper, we consider a ranging procedure occurred in the fixed and mobile broadband wireless access systems based on the Wireless MAN-OFDMA (Metropolitan Area Network -Orthogonal Frequency division Multiple Access). A ranging procedure is a collection of processes for a Mobile Subscriber Station (MSS) and a Base Station (BS) to maintain the quality of the radio frequency communication link between them. When multiple subscribers select the same ranging codes from the given ranging code pool and range the BS by transmitting those identical ranging codes at the same time frame, the ranging collision may be occurred at BS because the BS can not differentiate two different MSSs since they selected the same ranging code. We propose a mathematical performance model to analyze the probability of ranging collision affected by both the capacity of the ranging code pool and the rate of the MSS arriving to the system and investigate the numerical results of the proposed model. By the proposed model and its numerical results, we can calculate the minimum number of the required ranging codes to be implemented in BS(Base Station). We compare the analytical results with the simulated results to validate the proposed mathematical model is correct.

The effects of changing strain paths on forming limit stresses of sheet metals are investigated using the Marciniak‐Kuczyński model. Forming limits are analyzed for proportional loading and two types of combined loadings: combined loading which includes unloading between the first and second loadings and that which includes an abrupt strain path change without unloading between the first and second loadings. The forming limit stress curves in stress space calculated for the combined loading with unloading are in good agreement with those calculated for the proportional loading, while the forming limit curves in strain space are strongly dependent on the strain paths. The forming limit stresses calculated for combined loading with an abrupt strain path change, however, do not coincide with those calculated for proportional loading. The strain path dependence of the forming limit stresses is discussed in detail.

A multiobjective stochastic optimization technique is presented for the design of antenna arrays with given radiation pattern specifications. The technique utilizes the method of genetic algorithms and the proper objective functions are selected for the optimized array design. The technique has been implemented for the case where the arrays consist of vertical dipoles. The parameters of the GA include the elements positions, the array voltage excitation coefficients (amplitude and phase) and the radius and length of the dipoles. The array elements can either be arbitrarily placed, forming a non-uniform configuration or they can arange a circular, uniform, dual band array. In the latter case, the array and dipole characteristics are optimized by the GA for dual band operation, while different current coefficients have to be evaluated for each frequency. The presented results demonstrate the effectiveness, the versatility and applicability of the proposed technique.
