This paper presents an algorithmic learning theory for analogical synthesis of logic programs from their examples. An analogical synthesizer is defined as a kind of inductive inference machine that uses analogy. More precisely speaking, it synthesizes target programs from their examples, given a source program to which the target programs should be similar. One of the difficulties in realizing an efficient analogical synthesizer is to distinguish useless and inappropriate similarities from the other. A similarity is inappropriate if every similar program with respect to the similarity is not correct. If our synthesizer cannot refute such similarities then it would waste computational resources without succeeding to find a desired program. To cope with this hard problem on analogical synthesis, this paper first applies the notion of refutably inferable class of linear programs, and obtains a basic synthesizer. It has a function of refuting inappropriate similarities. Secondly this paper investigates another method of refuting inappropriate similarities, using an analogous technique that has been, employed for theorem proving with abstraction. Incorporating this method into the basic synthesizer, we obtain a more efficient one. All the synthesizers presented in this paper are proved to identify a similar correct program in the limit, given a source program. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1995.

He then worked as a civilian far the Naval Coastal Systems Center and then far Martin Marietta Aero and Naval Systems in the development of various submarine systems and unmanned undersea vehicles. David Smith:has been a member of the technical staff at MITRE s Advanced Information Technologies center since 1993. Providing realistic opposing forces is critical to the successful use of military training simulations. Unfortunately, a number of issues can make the manual control of realistic opposing forces difficult or unattainable, This paper explores these issues while discussing how Automatic Interactive Targets (AITs) can assist Training Exercise Controllers (TECs) in providing validated and realistic opposing forces in highly interactive situations. The features of the prototype Remote AIT Processing System (RAPS) are used to demonstrate how an AIT system can be designed to meet TEC requirements for automated entities, RAPS can provide remote control of AITs for existing or new systems while providing sufficient features to allow a TEC to appropriately select and control AITs for individual training exercises and crew proficiencies.

The complexities of adverbs present an interesting challenge to computational linguistics. This paper describes our work in building an adverbial lexicon, which draws on the theoretical work of several linguists to help us to cope with the complexity of the adverb class. Our lexicon contains information from many sources including machine readable dictionaries, a dictionary of adverb placement, and special collections of adverbial information developed by linguists. These sets of information have been organized and linked together using the information in the Machine Readable Dictionaries as a basic structure and using the Oracle Relational Database Management System. The paper includes a description of ways in which this lexicon can be used by natural language processing systems. © 1994 Oxford University Press.

FUEL-CELL POWER-PLANTS FOR SURFACE FLEET APPLICATIONS

After one year of military service with the French navy he worked as naval architect and program director for the French navy between 1984 and 1988. He was in charge of the development of AGNES200 Surface Effect Ship design which completed its sea trials in 1992. He also was responsible for the construction of five ships (four hydrographic vessels and one experimental MCM vessel) which entered service between 1988 and 1991. He has been involved in a number of projects and studies for the U.S. Navy U.S. Coast Guard and other foreign and domestic customers. At Band Lavis & Associates Inc. Mr. Goubault has expanded the computer tools used to conduct parametric analysis of advanced hullforms and has developed cost-effectiveness assessment tools and methodologies for both commercial and military ships. Mr. Goubault is a member of ASNE. Marc Greenberg:is employed as a cost analyst at the cost and economic analysis branch systems assessment and engineering division Naval Surface Warfare Center. He provides cost estimates and analyses of Navy ship and submarine technologies and has assisted in the development of parametric cost models since 1991. Employed as an electronics engineer by the U.S. Army Information Systems Command from 1989 to 1991 he provided support in simulation design and construction of high frequency and microwave communication systems. Mr. Greenberg received his BS degree in ceramic science and engineering from the Pennsylvania State University May 1987. He is a member of MORS. This paper describes the results of a study undertaken to determine the impact of fuel cell technology on the design and effectiveness of future naval surface combatants. The study involved the collection of data to characterize four different fuel cell technologies: proton exchange membrane, molten carbonate, phosphoric acid, and solid oxide fuel cells. This information was used to expand current computer models to develop specific fuel cell plants that met the power requirements for several applications on a nominal 5000 Lton destroyer and a nominal 2000 Lton corvette. Each of the fuel cell technologies was incorporated into several applications aboard the destroyer and the corvette. These applications included combinations of centralized and distributed ship service power, and propulsion power. In addition, the impact of fuel cell technology was determined for a ship service power backfit option aboard a DDG-51 class destroyer. The results of the impact on the ship designs were analyzed and a military effectiveness assessment was conducted to address such issues as the impact of fuel cells on mobility, survivability, affordability, and on the environment. The paper identifies which aspects of the fuel cell technologies have the greatest impact upon the ship designs and their operational costs. Recommendations are given for future technology development efforts required to make fuel cells suitable for Navy service.

This paper reports first results of the GMD project "User Interface Design Assistance (IDA)". The objective of this project is to develop computer based design aid tools for a human factor based user interface design. The reasons for concentrating on human factors are their increasing importance in the new European Economic Area and the lack of knowledge of the designers in the area of human factors. The design aid tools are integrated in a user interface management system (UIMS) to support the designers during the development process. The aim is to impart human factors knowledge for innovative user interfaces (e.g. object-oriented graphical interfaces;3-D user interfaces;hypermedia user interfaces) to the designers. This will be done with the help of design aid tools, like a composition tool, a tutoring tool and a quality assurance tool. They are presented in some detail. First results have shown, that it is principally possible to realise such design aid tools. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1993.

The objects and structures used within an automatic knowledge acquisition tool for input storage directly affect the types and complexity of the validation process. The validation process can be complicated when inputs are made by a user who is not a domain expert or is unfamiliar with the target system. This is the type of scenario that is being addressed by the AUTOKNAQ tool and is the reason for its extensive validation. The input storage, which is optimized for facilitating inputs, tends to complicate the validation logic. The validation for AUTOKNAQ is performed as a series of five steps, each checks for a certain set of errors or conditions that could corrupt the knowledge and databases. An example is given for the validation of an incorrectly entered target system configuration.< >

The depth-first picture expression (DF-expression) is a compact quadtree expression providing a high data compression capability. It is primarily a hierarchically structured data representation for binary pictures. The authors first review the basic ideas of the DF-expression, and its potential data-compression competence. Then the practical problem is studied of how much reduction can be achieved data by converting the expression to a binary coding. It is also shown that there are two directions in the DF-expression strategy for the gray-image coding. One is the bit-plane based, and the other is the three-dimensional (three-valued) DF-expressions. For most of the natural images, the bit-plane based strategy is more effective than the three-dimensional one. The reason for that is discussed.< >
