The depth-first picture expression (DF-expression) is a compact quadtree expression providing a high data compression capability. It is primarily a hierarchically structured data representation for binary pictures. The authors first review the basic ideas of the DF-expression, and its potential data-compression competence. Then the practical problem is studied of how much reduction can be achieved data by converting the expression to a binary coding. It is also shown that there are two directions in the DF-expression strategy for the gray-image coding. One is the bit-plane based, and the other is the three-dimensional (three-valued) DF-expressions. For most of the natural images, the bit-plane based strategy is more effective than the three-dimensional one. The reason for that is discussed.< >

Both the timely manufacture of defense systems and their subsequent on-line operability depend upon the availability of component parts. The growing problem of microelectronic component nonavailability is casting a shadow over logistics support to these systems. This paper will discuss the causes of the problem and provide some examples of cases confronted by the DoD logistics community. It will also identify some actions which have been taken in the past to manage the issue as well as initiatives now underway. Finally it will look at what lies ahead.

A new method is presented for estimating the power spectral density matrix for multichannel data, given correlation values for linear combinations of the channels and given an initial estimate of the spectral density matrix. A derivation of the method from the relative-entropy principle is given. The results differ significantly from the Multisignal Relative-Entropy ("Minimum-Cross-Entropy") Spectrum Analysis of Johnson and Shore because the present method does not arbitrarily force the final distributions of the various channels to be independent. For the special case when correlation values are given only for the sum of the channels, Multichannel Relative-Entropy Spectrum Analysis is shown to reduce to a two-stage procedure: first a smooth power-spectrum model is fitted to the correlations of the sum; then final estimates of the spectra and cross spectra are obtained through linear filtering. Illustrative numerical examples are presented.

A linear parabolic partial differential equation describing the pathwise filter for a nondegenerate diffusion is changed, by an exponential substitution, into the dynamic programming equation of an optimal stochastic control problem. This substitution is applied to obtain results about the rate of decay as |x| → ∞ of solutions p(x, t) to the pathwise filter equation, and for solutions of the corresponding Zakai equation.

Carlson received his B.S. degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1970 and began his career with the Department of the Navy at the Naval Ship Engineering Center (NAVSEC). In 1972. he returned to the University of Michigan under the NAVSEC Long Term Training Program and received his M.S. degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. After returning to the Ship Arrangements Branch at NAVSEC. he was assigned as Task Leader for General Arrangements for the PGG PCG PHM. and MCM ship designs and was awarded Outstanding Performance Awards in 1974 and 1975. In addition he was Manager of the Arrangement Subsystem of the Navy's Computer-Aided Ship Design and Construction Program (CASDAC). In October 1979. he became Manager of the CASDAC Hull Design System. Currently. he also is enrolled in the M.S. of Computer Science Program at Johns Hopkins University. Mr. Carlson previously has presented technical papers at ASNE Day 1974 and 1978 as well as at the 1979 DOD Manufacturing Technology Advisory Group Conference. Besides ASNE. which he joined in 1972. he is a member of SNAME. ASE. and the U.S. Naval Institute. Mr. Robert A. Johnson is a Naval Architect in Surface Combatants Design (SEA 03D3). Ship Design Integration Directorate Naval Sea Systems Command. He received an Associate in Engineering degree in Drafting and Design Technology in 1959. his B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering in 1965. and his M.S. degree in Engineering Mechanics in 1970. all from the Pennsylvania State University. In 1973. he was selected for the NA VSEC Hull Division s Long Term Training Program at the University of Michigan subsequently receiving his M.S.E. degree in Naval Architecture in 1974. Mr. Johnson began his career with the Ordnance Research Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University in 1959 where he worked. on the design of hydroelastic submarine models and conducted research in the area of flow induced structural vibrations. This paper presents an integrated approach to Computer-Aided Ship Design for U.S. Navy preliminary and contract design. An integrated Hull Design System (HDS), currently under development by the Hull Group of the Naval Sea systems Command (NAVSEA 32). is the vehicle for the discussion. This paper is directed toward practicing ship design professionals and the managers of the ship design process. Primary emphasis of this paper, and of the development effort currently under way, is on aiding ship design professionals in their work. Focus is on integration and management control of the extremely complex set of processes which make up naval ship design. The terminology of the Ship Designer and Design Manager is used. The reader needs no familiarity with the technologies of computer science.

Traditional passive techniques have a fundamental limitation. The external world surrounding us is three-dimensional; the image projected on a retina or an imaging device is two-dimensional. That is, reduction of one dimension has occurred. Active illumination techniques compensate for the dimensional reduction by actively controlling the illumination. The demand for reliable vision sensors is rapidly increasing in many application areas, such as robotics and medical image analysis. This book explains this new endeavour to explore the augmentation of reduced dimensions in computer vision.;This book consists of three parts: basic concepts, techniques, and applications. The first part explains the basic concepts for understanding active illumination techniques. In particular, the basic concepts of optics are explained so that researchers and engineers outside the field can understand the later chapters. The second part explains currently available active illumination techniques, covering many techniques developed by the authors. The final part shows how such active illumination techniques can be applied to various domains, describing the issue to be overcome by active illumination techniques and the advantages of using these techniques.　This book is primarily aimed at 4th year undergraduate and 1st year graduate students, and will also help engineers from fields beyond computer vision to use active illumination techniques. Additionally, the book is suitable as course material for technical seminars.
