As the number of social networking services (SNS) and their users grow, so does the complexity of individual networks as well as the amount of information to be consumed by the users. Users of SNS exchange short and instantaneous messages interactively, which can be seen as conversations. We explore this conversational aspect of SNS and show how refined topic-based semantic social networks can be formed in order to reduce the complexity and information overload. Among other possibilities, we use the notion of topic diversity and topic purity of SNS conversations between two users and show different types of social relationships can be identified in that they break down a huge "syntactic" social network into topic-based ones based on different interaction types. Resulting semantic social networks can be useful in designing various targeted services on online social networks. Copyright © 2012, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (***). While employee voice has been realized a critical element of organizational success, many employees often remain silent and withdraw useful information and ideas. In this paper, we present how employees utilize existing social media platform in a creative, collective way to anonymously share their voices - a phenomenon called the bamboo forests in Korea. We present the key characteristics of bamboo forests including self-mention and connectivity, and discuss the main topics and sentiments of such bamboo forests. Our analysis indicates that employees find such anonymous platform useful. We provide insights on the potential for utilizing the voice of the employees online. Despite the growing interest in using online social networking services (OSNS) for advertising, little is understood about what contributes to the social advertising performance. In this research, we pose following questions: How many clicks do social advertisements actually receive? What are the characteristics of the advertisements that receive many clicks? What factors contribute to the clicks on advertisements? In order to answer these questions, we collect data from AdbyMe, a social media advertisement platform that connects businesses, or advertisers, with users of online social network services. Businesses can reach a large target audience through AdbyMe users who publish the advertisements on their social networks. We analyze the factors that may affect the clicks on advertisements being published on OSNS. In particular, we look into the advertised contents as well as the characteristics of users who publish the advertisements. We find that the traditional advertisement content analysis alone cannot fully explain the effectiveness of social advertisements. More importantly, we discover that in a social advertising paradigm, social influence of a publisher has a strong impact on the number of clicks on the advertisements. Our findings suggest that considering both the advertised contents and the influence of advertising publishers allows better understanding of the social advertisement phenomenon. © 2013 ACM.

Emails are very popular method for information exchange between people. In this paper, an approach to annotate the starting time (stime) and ending time (etime) of duration in schedule notices is proposed. Most related works have reported on only seminar announcements, most of which contain only one schedule per announcement and are written in very restricted format. Different from those seminar announcements, an email frequently contains information about multiple schedules with highly complex format. To process the emails, the proposed system first detects and normalizes all time expressions of the email using regular expression patterns, and then determines which time expression actually represents stime and etime information of schedules. Evaluation is carried out on newly constructed Korean email corpus, and it shows 87.35 % of F1-score for stime and 85.13 % for etime. © 2011 ACM.

Automatically detecting cancer-revealing clauses in a medical report can be helpful for medical experts in various tasks such as cancer staging. While the problem of detecting such clauses can be formulated as classifying individual clauses into cancer and non-cancer categories, standard classification algorithms suffer from the fact that the training data contains much more non-cancer clauses than cancer clauses in radiology reports. In order to alleviate the data imbalance and sparseness problems related to the radiology reports, we attempt to use cancer-related external data in term weighting at the training stage. Our experiment shows that this approach indeed changes term feature statistics and improve effectiveness of the classifier. © 2013 IEEE.

Linguistic creativity is a marriage of form and content in which each works together to convey our meanings with concision, resonance and wit. Though form clearly influences and shapes our content, the most deft formal trickery cannot compensate for a lack of real insight. Before computers can be truly creative with language, we must first imbue them with the ability to formulate meanings that are worthy of creative expression. This is especially true of computer-generated poetry. If readers are to recognize a poetic turn-of-phrase as more than a superficial manipulation of words, they must perceive and connect with the meanings and the intent behind the words. So it is not enough for a computer to merely generate poem-shaped texts;poems must be driven by conceits that build an affective worldview. This paper describes a conceit-driven approach to computational poetry, in which metaphors and blends are generated for a given topic and affective slant. Subtle inferences drawn from these metaphors and blends can then drive the process of poetry generation. In the same vein, we consider the problem of generating witty insights from the banal truisms of common-sense knowledge bases. © 2013 Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Computational Creativity, ICCC 2013. Creative metaphors abound in language because they facilitate communication that is memorable, effective and elastic. Such metaphors allow a speaker to be maximally suggestive while being minimally committed to any single interpretation, so they can both supply and elicit information in a conversation. Yet, though metaphors are often used to articulate affective viewpoints and information needs in everyday language, they are rarely used in information retrieval (IR) queries. IR fails to distinguish between creative and uncreative uses of words, since it typically treats words as literal mentions rather than suggestive allusions. We show here how a computational model of affective comprehension and generation allows IR users to express their information needs with creative metaphors that concisely allude to a dense body of assertions. The key to this approach is a lexicon of stereotypical concepts and their affective properties. We show how such a lexicon is harvested from the open web and from local web n-grams. © 2013 Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Computational Creativity, ICCC 2013. Popular Internet services in recent years have shown that remarkable things can be achieved by harnessing the power of the masses using crowd-sourcing systems. However, crowd-sourcing systems can also pose a real challenge to existing security mechanisms deployed to protect Internet services. Many of these security techniques rely on the assumption that malicious activity is generated automatically by automated programs. Thus they would perform poorly or be easily bypassed when attacks are generated by real users working in a crowd-sourcing system. Through measurements, we have found surprising evidence showing that not only do malicious crowd-sourcing systems exist, but they are rapidly growing in both user base and total revenue. We describe in this paper a significant effort to study and understand these crowdturfing systems in today's Internet. We use detailed crawls to extract data about the size and operational structure of these crowdturfing systems. We analyze details of campaigns offered and performed in these sites, and evaluate their end-to-end effectiveness by running active, benign campaigns of our own. Finally, we study and compare the source of workers on crowdturfing sites in different countries. Our results suggest that campaigns on these systems are highly effective at reaching users, and their continuing growth poses a concrete threat to online communities both in the US and elsewhere.

Long-term evolution (LTE) is emerging as a major candidate for 4G cellular networks to satisfy the increasing demands for mobile broadband services, particularly multimedia delivery. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology combined with orthogonal frequency division multiple access and more efficient modulation/coding schemes (MCS) are key physical layer technologies in LTE networks. However, in order to fully utilize the benefits of the advances in physical layer technologies, the MIMO configuration and MCS need to be dynamically adjusted to derive the promised gains of 4G at the application level. This paper provides a performance evaluation of video traffic with variations in the physical layer transmission parameters to suit the varying channel conditions. A quantitative analysis is provided using the perceived video quality as a video quality measure (evaluated using no-reference blocking and blurring metrics), as well as transmission delay. Experiments are performed to measure the performance with changes in modulation and code rates in poor and good channel conditions. We discuss how an adaptive scheme can optimize the performance over a varying channel. © 2013 The Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers.

Recent work in testing has demonstrated the benefits of considering test oracles in the testing process. Unfortunately, this work has focused primarily on developing techniques for generating test oracles, in particular techniques based on mutation testing. While effective for test case generation, existing research has not considered the impact of test oracles in the context of regression testing tasks. Of interest here is the problem of test case prioritization, in which a set of test cases are ordered to attempt to detect faults earlier and to improve the effectiveness of testing when the entire set cannot be executed. In this work, we propose a technique for prioritizing test cases that explicitly takes into account the impact of test oracles on the effectiveness of testing. Our technique operates by first capturing the flow of information from variable assignments to test oracles for each test case, and then prioritizing to "cover" variables using the shortest paths possible to a test oracle. As a result, we favor test orderings in which many variables impact the test oracle's result early in test execution. Our results demonstrate improvements in rate of fault detection relative to both random and structural coverage based prioritization techniques when applied to faulty versions of three synchronous reactive systems. © 2012 IEEE.
