Metaphors pervade our language because they are elastic enough to allow a speaker to express an affective viewpoint on a topic without committing to a specific meaning. This balance of expressiveness and indeterminism means that metaphors are just as useful for eliciting information as they are for conveying information. We explore here, via a demonstration of a system for metaphor interpretation and generation called Metaphor Magnet, the practical uses of metaphor as a basis for formulating affective information queries. We also consider the kinds of deep and shallow stereotypical knowledge that are needed for such a system, and demonstrate how they can be acquired from corpora and the web. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics

We improve the readability of a personal timeline by weaving multiple social contexts of tweets into a visualization. Our social contexts consist of three dimensions: community membership, key persons, and interesting tweets within a personal timeline. A person is often a member of several communities, such as a family, a class, or a team, simultaneously. We identify all communities that a user participates in. Labeling a tweet with a visual representation to indicate what community it belongs to can help readers to understand why the tweet is written, since different communities are likely to carry tweets in different contexts. We then discover key persons and interesting tweets within a personal timeline. Our prototype design demonstrates how three social contexts work together for visualizing a personal timeline. System development often results in algorithms and access methods that are heuristic in nature. They have the merits of being easy to understand, simple to implement, and reasonably effective on many real datasets. Nonetheless, common criticism is that they typically come with no non-trivial performance guarantees. For years the database community has been striving to discover methods that are small and sweet. That is, such a method should be implementable in practice (i.e., small), and in the mean time, must retain attractive efficiency even in the worst case (i.e., sweet). This talk serves as an introduction to the current progress in the research of small and sweet algorithms and data structures. We will review solutions to several classic problems including spatial join, skyline retrieval, range searching, and so on. Special discussion will be dedicated to techniques generally useful for obtaining good worst-case I/O bounds. © 2012, Australian Computer Society.

Illegal distribution of user-generated pornography (UGP) videos raises lots of negative aspects associated with the digital contents. This paper proposes a first forensic technique to detect UGP video. To discriminate UGP videos, we exploit shot based sensor pattern noise (SPN) from an image under investigation. By thresholding average peak-to-correlation (PCE) values from the shot based SPNs, the video is decided as a UGP video. Preliminary experiments, which consist of UGP videos, normal videos, and Japanese commercial pornographic videos, indicate adequate performance of the proposed technique.

As the 3D content market is growing up rapidly, copyright issues on the 3D content naturally have come into play. Among the various 3D coding techniques, depth-image-based rendering (DIBR) has been studied by numerous researchers due to its coding efficiency and 2D compatibility. However, conventional watermarking scheme for 2D content cannot be directly applied to the DIBR content because DIBR process is considered as a new type of attack in terms of watermarking design. In this paper, we propose a watermarking scheme for DIBR 3D videos with an improved version of DT-CWT magnitude quantization. In order for efficient watermark embedding and extraction on DIBR 3D videos, all frames are grouped. Then, the watermark is embedded repeatedly and periodically so that extraction performance is enhanced. Furthermore, the quantization process is improved to a faster version by checking sum of magnitude and setting a start point of quantization order optimally. The simulation results show that the embedded watermark is stably extracted from center views and virtual views. Moreover, when the watermarked virtual views are distorted or processed by compression, scaling, median filtering and noise addition, the embedded watermark is extracted with low BERs.

Many software systems rely on graphical-user interfaces (GUIs) to support user interactions. The correctness of these GUIs affects the overall quality of the systems, and thus, it is important that GUIs be tested. To support such testing, GUI test case generation techniques based on graph models such as event flow graphs (EFGs) have been used to generate test cases in the form of sequences of events. Models, however, are abstractions of dynamic behavior and may not accurately reflect actual system behavior;thus, test case generation techniques based on models may create nonexecutable test cases and miss important events. Test case generation techniques based on dynamic event extraction-based approaches, in contrast, may suffer less from these effects. As a consequence, we expect that the two approaches will differ in terms of cost and effectiveness. In this paper, we report the results of an empirical study comparing the cost and effectiveness of model-based and dynamic event extraction-based test case generation approaches. Our results show that event extraction-based approaches, though more expensive than model-based approaches, are indeed more effective in terms of their ability to achieve code coverage and to cover events, but at additional cost, with implications for both researchers and practitioners. © 2012 IEEE.

Modern Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) provide lifelike virtual environments in which players can conduct a variety of activities including combat, trade, and chat with other players. While the game world and the available actions therein are inspired by their offline counterparts, the games' popularity and dedicated fan base are testaments to the allure of novel social interactions granted to people by allowing them an alternative life as a new character and persona. In this paper we investigate the phenomenon of "gender swapping," which refers to players choosing avatars of genders opposite to their natural ones. We report the behavioral patterns observed in players of Fairyland Online, a globally serviced MMORPG, during social interactions when playing as in-game avatars of their own real gender or genderswapped. We also discuss the effect of gender role and self-image in virtual social situations and the potential of our study for improving MMORPG quality and detecting online identity frauds. Traditionally, agricultural forecasting has relied on empirical methods and basic statistical analysis, such as applying average values from previous years' yields or using a simple linear fit for next year's predictions. However, the emergence of data-driven approaches, particularly machine learning algorithms, has revolutionized yield prediction in agriculture. Machine learning techniques have demonstrated their potential to provide accurate predictions. However, existing models often rely on a limited number of input variables for crop yield predictions, which makes them only suitable for specific scenarios. In this study, we have developed four distinct machine learning-based predictors, incorporating various climate factors, including daytime temperature, nighttime temperature, precipitation (rainfall), vegetation index, and evapotranspiration as input variables to predict tomato acreage yields in counties of California, USA. Our results show that regression models constructed using neural networks and linear regression exhibited better performance than other predictors, achieving an average accuracy rate of 70% to 80%. Compared to most of the existing crop yield predictors, our models offer versatility while maintaining a desirable level of predictive accuracy. Expanding the number of input variables, such as nitrogen fertilizer usage etc, and introducing larger spatial and temporal high-resolution datasets for model training can improve our model performance, enabling us to obtain better results in tomato yield prediction. © 2023 IEEE.

Text classification has become a critical step in big data analytics. For supervised machine learning approaches to text classification, availability of sufficient training data with classification labels attached to individual text units is essential to the performance. Since labeled data are usually scarce, however, it is always desirable to devise a semi-supervised method where unlabeled data are used in addition to labeled ones. A solution is to apply a latent factor model to generate clustered text features and use them for text classification. The main thrust of the current research is to extend Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) for this purpose by considering word weights in sampling and maintaining balances of topic distributions. A series of experiments were conducted to evaluate the proposed method for classification tasks. The result shows that the topic distributions generated by the balance weighted topic modeling method add some discriminative power to feature generations for classification.

As a bridge for evolution of the current web toward Semantic web, semantic annotation plays an important role to turn regular web contents into meaningful ones. However, existing semantic annotation methods mostly use semantic terms in ontology created by domain experts. Therefore, they cannot cover the various subjects of contents, some of which frequently change. To deal with this problem by alternating ontology to Linked Data, we propose a semantic cloud generation scheme that finds and merges relevant terms from Linked Data for a given request. To reduce the complexity of handling a large amount of RDF data, we locate essential points at which to start searching for relevant concepts in Linked Data;we then iteratively analyze potential merges of different semantic data. In this paper, we describe the challenges of forming semantic clouds out of Linked Data and the approach of effectively generating semantic clouds by using the similarity link analysis method.© Springer International Publishing 2013.
