Conventional dialysate recycling methods struggle to effectively remove creatinine, urea, and other minor contaminants. This study explores mixed matrix membrane adsorbers (MMMAs) as a novel approach to address these challenges. MMMAs, which integrate adsorbents into filtration membranes, function as both filters and impurity scavengers. Zeolite carbon composite (ZCC) and zeolite-templated carbon (ZTC) were incorporated into MMMAs using the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) technique. Characterization by SEM and XRD confirmed the successful synthesis of ZCC and ZTC, retaining the zeolite-Y structure and amorphous nature, with notable differences in particle sizes (680 and 379 nm) and crystallite sizes (0.45 and 0.02 nm). FTIR revealed hydrogen bonding interactions between ZCC and PVP, absent in ZTC. SEM and AFM analyses of the membranes indicated increased hydrophilicity and porosity with ZCC, while ZTC reduced surface roughness. MMMAs significantly outperformed pristine membranes in removing urea and creatinine. The PPK-0.2 membrane achieved superior rejection rates (93.05 % for urea and 98.95 % for creatinine), attributed to microporous entrapment of ZTC and polymer matrix adsorption. In contrast, PPZ-0.2 showed lower rejection rates (84.24 % for urea and 85.79 % for creatinine), relying solely on physical adsorption. These findings highlight MMMAs, especially ZTC-based ones, as promising candidates for enhancing dialysate reuse efficiency. © 2024 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry

This study aimed to determine the potential of coffee skin waste (Coffea robusta L) as a superior compost innovation for the growth of pepper-cutting seedlings (Piper nigrum L). This study used an experimental method with a completely randomized design using five treatments and five repeats, variations in the dose of coffee skin waste used P0 (control), P1 (90 g), P2 (135 g), P3 (180 g), and P4 (225 g). The shoot height, number of leaves, number of roots, and length of roots were measured. The results showed that coffee skin waste compost significantly affected shoot height, especially at P1 (90 g), resulting in an average growth height of 7.24 cm. In addition, the highest number of leaves was found at a concentration of P1 (90 g), with an average of two leaves. Although there was no significant effect on the number of roots, the concentration of P1 (90 g) yielded the best results, with an average of 33 root blades, and the best root length was obtained at the concentration of P1 (90 g), with an average of 44.6 cm. Therefore, coffee skin waste significantly influenced shoot height and the number of leaves on pepper-cut seedlings (Piper nigrum L.) in the P1 treatment (90 g).

This research aims to determine the estimation of Rayleigh's distribution parameters on the data survival analysis of type II of tuberculosis patients. The method used in this research is the Bayesian method to perform estimate parameters. The process estimation parameter using the Bayesian method requires information from the likelihood function and the prior distribution. The prior distribution used was the prior distribution of Jeffreys. In this study, estimates of Rayleigh's distribution parameters were applied in the survival analysis data of tuberculosis sufferers. And the value of estimated parameters in patients with tuberculosis acquired θ = 0.001097324 and the changes of the survival value decreased near to zero. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Displaced phase-amplitude variable in polar form. This variable is used to investigate changes in amplitude in complex fields with phases that depend only on the position in the propagation. Soliton on Finite Background (SFB) which is an exact solution of Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation has been widely used in investigating wave propagation dynamics so that it is the basic for the proposed displaced phase-amplitude. Using displaced phase-amplitude, the results obtained can be described in Argand Diagrams. Wave equation used as a model is the Benjamin Bona Mahony (BBM) equation where the envelope of this wave evolves following the NLS equation. This wave is unidirectional long wave on the surface and has low amplitude characteristics. Step by step to obtain a SFB solution that contains displaced phase-amplitude described and displayed in an argand diagram. This article discusses the mathematical model of changes in the number of cancer cells as a result of the intervention. Here the effect of combination treatment, in the form of virus injection and chemotherapy on tumor cells, is presented in detail. There are two different tumor cells, uninfected tumor cells and infected tumor cells. Model simulations with different parameters were performed for 700 d. The initial values for the population of virus-infected tumor cells are divided into two categories. The number of tumor cells injected with the virus is 1/2 (half) and all tumor cells that are not infected. Based on the simulation results, it was concluded that the more the number of tumor cells injected with the virus, the faster the decrease in the number of tumor cell populations. It was also concluded that the reduced population of tumor cells reduces the amount of chemotherapy concentration used. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The increasing demand for sustainable materials has highlighted nanocellulose as a promising candidate due to its exceptional mechanical strength, thermal stability, and superior barrier properties. These attributes enable its application in diverse fields, including packaging, biomedical devices, and nanocomposites. This study investigates the valorization of edamame bean husks, a byproduct of the globally consumed legume snack, as a sustainable feedstock for nanocellulose production. Cellulose was extracted from the husks via delignification and bleaching, followed by a green and facile acid hydrolysis method employing organic acids (maleic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, and formic acid) to produce nanocellulose. The resulting nanocellulose exhibited a fibrillar morphology with particle sizes ranging from 7.59 to 17.51 nm, depending on the acid used. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a crystallinity index ranging from 63.49 % to 67.24 %. Notably, acid hydrolysis significantly enhanced the thermal stability of the nanocellulose compared to both the raw husk and isolated cellulose. These findings demonstrate the potential of edamame agricultural waste as a valuable resource for sustainable and eco-friendly nanocellulose production, contributing to a circular bioeconomy. © 2025 The Authors

A fluorescence probe based on iron oxide quantum dots (IO-QDs) was synthesized using the hydrothermal method for the determination of tetracycline (TCy) and ciprofloxacin (CPx) in aqueous solution. The IO-QDs were characterized using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The as-prepared IO-QDs are fluorescent, stable, and with a fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of 9.8 ± 0.12%. The fluorescence of IO-QDs was observed to be quenched and enhanced in the presence of TCy and CPx, respectively. The fluorescence intensity ratio shows linearity at concentrations from 1-100 μM and 5-100 μM for TCy and CPx, respectively;the detection limit for TCy and CPx was estimated to be 0.71 μM and 1.56 μM, respectively. The proposed method was also successfully utilized in the spiked samples of drinking water and honey with good recoveries. The method offered convenience, rapid detection, high sensitivity, selectivity, and cost-efficient alternative options for the determination of TCy and CPx in real samples. © 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Dense sphere packings from optimized correlation functions

Elementary smooth functions (beyond contact) are employed to construct pair correlation functions that mimic jammed disordered sphere packings. Using the g2-invariant optimization method of Torquato and Stillinger [J. Phys. Chem. B 106, 8354 (2002)], parameters in these functions are optimized under necessary realizability conditions to maximize the packing fraction ϕ and average number of contacts per sphere Z. A pair correlation function that incorporates the salient features of a disordered packing and that is smooth beyond contact is shown to permit a ϕ of 0.6850: this value represents a 45% reduction in the difference between the maximum for congruent hard spheres in three dimensions, π/18≈0.7405 and 0.64, the approximate fraction associated with maximally random jammed packings in three dimensions. We show that, surprisingly, the continued addition of elementary functions consisting of smooth sinusoids decaying as r−4 permits packing fractions approaching π/18. A translational order metric is used to discriminate between degrees of order in the packings presented. We find that to achieve higher packing fractions, the degree of order must increase, which is consistent with the results of a previous study [Torquato et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2064 (2000)].

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pioneer bacterium initiating the biofilm formation process so that it is corrosive to some metals in the marine environment. One of the efforts to prevent and control corrosion due to environmentally friendly biofilms is using green biocides. The extraction of Aloe vera and Morinda citrifolia with methanol were carried out to obtain antibacterial material. The extract of those plants with multilevel maceration method. The study aimed to identify the total phenolic and flavonoid contents in A. vera and M. citrifolia crude extracts and compare the two antibacterial extract activities. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were analyzed using the Folin-Ciocalteu and the aluminum chloride colorimetric methods. The antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa was conducted using the microdilution method to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The structure of the bioactive components of both A. vera and M. citrifolia extracts were identified using a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (LC/MS-MS). The MIC of A. vera and M. citrifolia for P. aeruginosa bacteria is about 6144 µg/mL, while the MIC of antibiotic Enrofloxacin is 16 µg/mL. The mean of total phenolic and flavonoid contents for the methanolic extracts of A. vera and M. citrifolia were 1.39% and 4.03% (phenolic), and 0.26% and 0.28% (flavonoids), respectively. The chemical structure of A. vera consists of 2″-O-Feruloylaloesin, Kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, and Natsudaidain. At the same time, the chemical structure of M. citrifolia consists of 7-Hydroxy-Methoxycoumarin and Cirsiumaldehyde. A. vera and M. citrifolia crude extracts had lower inhibition than antibacterial control (Enrofloxacin) for P. aeruginosa. The lower bacteria inhibition was due to the low active materials (phenolic and flavonoid contents). So, the purification methods of crude extracts to obtain active materials with high antibacterial activity were needed. © 2022

Traditional fermented food as a special delicacy is one of the elements of culinary diversity found in many regions of Indonesia. This type of food is closely related to the customs and surrounding environment, displaying the characteristics of each region and ethnicity. Maluku is one of the regions located in Eastern Indonesia. Ina sua is a simple and traditional fermented food made from fish using salt as a basic ingredient, commonly eaten at a variety of traditional events in Central Maluku, especially in Teon Nila Serua (TNS). Ina sua is made to be stored and consumed during a time when fish is not available and when there are community activities such as birthdays and traditional events. In making Ina sua, fish are salted with salt granules and stored for a certain time. Therefore, this food is famous for its unique taste produced by the fermentation component. In this article, the origin of Ina sua, its method of preparation, and the scientific perspectives surrounding it are discussed. © 2020 The Author(s).
