Purpose This paper shows a development of an integrated model to identify the customer needs and select the best solution to optimize the quality of healthcare systems, namely at hospitals. Design/methodology/approach After determining the patient's requirements by data gathering from experts and patients, a questionnaire was prepared to implement the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) method. Afterward, the requirement's weight has determined by the patients. Finally, the most important technical requirements were achieved applying the 3-phases Quality Function Deployment (QFD) model. Findings The results show that by adapting the FAHP on ideas of the patients and hospital's experts to determine the weights of patients' requirements, led to have more flotation in FAHP questionnaires in the hospital services. In this domain, adopting the decision-making tools help more precise ranking of patients' requirements. Originality/value Since high-quality urgent services are vital to the protection of human life, it is significant to precisely rank the patient’s requirements by novel methodologies. By the implementation of an integrated model using FAHP and QFD, we were able to show the improvement of the quality of an hospital in Iran. After precisely ranking the patient requirements, "increasing human resource" and "establishing requirements and instructions in initial measures and reducing medication errors", are obtained as the most important technical requirements. © 2022 Universidade do Minho. Extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall and typhoons, are becoming more frequent due to climate change and can significantly impact coastal microbial communities. This study examines the short-term alterations in microbial food webs—viruses, bacteria, picophytoplankton, nanoflagellates, ciliates, and diatom—following Typhoon Krathon in Taiwan's coastal waters in October 2024. Daily in situ sampling revealed a significant post-typhoon increased in viral, nanoflagellate, and Synechococcus spp. abundance. Furthermore, viral, Synechococcus spp., and nanoflagellate abundance increased by approximately 4.2 to 12.8-fold, 33.3 to 160 fold, and 0.5 to 9.4 fold in response to these weather events, compared to periods pre-typhoon, respectively. Modified dilution experiments showed that, before the typhoon, nanoflagellate grazing was the major cause of bacterial mortality, while viral lysis was the main cause of Synechococcus spp. mortality. Post-typhoon, there was a notable shift, with nanoflagellate grazing increasing mortality rates of bacteria and Synechococcus spp., suggesting that grazing became the dominant top-down control mechanism after the disturbance. Our findings suggest that extreme weather events shift microbial mortality dynamics, increasing the role of grazing in controlling microbial populations, with potential implications for carbon cycling in coastal ecosystems. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

This work introduces a scheme of layered neural network training, which incorporates a dynamical model alteration during training, and regularization of the features extracted in the hidden layer units. So far, use of Model Switching (MS), which is a simultaneous search scheme for an optimal model and parameter, proved to improve training efficiency and generalization ability as a side effect. In MS, the operation to switch the network to a different model involve orthogonalization of the features extracted in the hidden layer. Assuming that the orthogonalization contributes to the observed merits, joint use of MS and orthogonalization of the hidden layer feature by introducing a regularization term in the training, is introduced. The network trained by the proposed training scheme is applied to a pattern recognition problem, and some improvement in training efficiency and generalization ability were observed.

In this paper, we looked into two issues in pattern recognition using neural networks trained by back propagation (BP), namely inefficient learning and insufficient generalization. We observed that these phenomena are partly caused by the way the hidden layer units responds to the inputs. In order to solve the issues, we introduced regularization of the hidden layer unit response which amounts to suppressing the correlation among the response of the hidden layer units, and pruning the unit with the method unit fusion. The results of using the proposed technique were compared with the case of conventional technique in pattern recognition problems. From the results of the experiments, the rate of correct recognition increased when using regularization in the hidden layer unit response is performed, and it turned out that the required number of training epochs also decreases.

Fuzzy c-means is well-known among the various methods of fuzzy cluster analysis. L/sub 1/-based fuzzy c-means has also been studied in recent years. This paper discusses the L/sub 1/-based fuzzy c-means of data with fuzzy uncertainties. The data unit is supposed to be the Cartesian product of fuzzy numbers. The metric between a data unit with uncertainty and a cluster center is defined using minimum and maximum distances. The fuzzy c-means algorithm is an alternative procedure for the optimization of the cluster center and the fuzzy set membership, while the solution of the cluster center for uncertain data cannot be obtained directly. An algorithm for the solution of cluster centers based on the L/sub 1/ metric for uncertain data is developed in this paper. Using this algorithm, an exact alternate optimization procedure is obtained. Numerical examples show that the results for uncertain data are different from the results for data without uncertainties.

This paper proposes a Complex-Valued Neural Network (CVNN) for glucose sensing in milli-meter wave (mmWave). Based on the propagation characteristics of millimeter wave in glucose medium, we obtain the S21 parameter of glucose with the concentration range of 0-300mg/dL in the 60-80 GHz frequency band by High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) simulations. Then we combine the sensing model with a neural network to detect and predict the glucose concentration relying on the learning ability of the neural network. In the prediction of the concentration of unknown samples, the absolute error between the predicted value and the true value is within 5mg/dL, which confirms the ability of the proposed CVNN model. © 2023 ACM.

Due to the physiological constraints and daily habits of hand movements, the wrist chattering effect (WCE) will inadvertently cause disturbance to the accuracy of fingers’ pattern recognition, when healthy subjects or amputees undergoing mirror training control their fingers according to instructions. This paper proposes a method for estimating WCE angles using a disturbance observer. Based on the Denavit-Hartenberg (D-H) convention and inverse kinematics, the intervals of the WCE during finger flexion and extension are determined. The research objective is to eliminate disturbance terms containing redundant information referring to sliding mode anti-jittering methods, making subsequent machine learning models less susceptible to disturbances.

Exoskeleton robots are currently widely used in the field of rehabilitation medicine to effectively assist patients with hand function loss in their rehabilitation training. To accommodate the physiological characteristics of the hand, particularly the deviation of the joint rotation axis, this paper proposes a hybrid-driven hand exoskeleton system with redundant compliant mechanisms and conducts motion and force analysis on it. The exoskeleton system can independently drive three fingers and drive their joints separately. To verify whether the exoskeleton system meets the rehabilitation requirements, angle verification experiments and object grasping experiments were conducted. The results showed that the maximum joint range of motion of the exoskeleton system reached 66 °, with an average joint range of motion of 55 ° , fully meeting the rehabilitation needs.

This paper will historically review and describe the Navy High Energy Laser Weapon System (HELWS). Advances in anti-ship cruise missiles (ASMs), which present the greatest challenge in surface ship self defense, are necessitating the development of significantly more sophisticated and expensive surface-to-air missiles in order to counter the threat. The next generation of ASMs, as represented by the French ANS, will be capable of skimming only meters above the sea surface at multi-mach speeds, while performing evasive maneuvers during terminal run-in. This type of threat has essentially eliminated naval gun systems from the role of ship self-defense, and has significantly reduced the effectiveness of cu''ent missile systems. Under development for the past twenty years, the High Energy Chemical Laser appears to be a feasible solution to the ship self-defense problem. Capable of operating effectively in all weather conditions except dense fog, a HELWS requires no conventional rire control solution, since it operates at the speed of light. Any target that can be tracked can be enpged. Furthermore, once the beam director is locked onto a target, the system is insensitive to target maneuvers. By tailoring the lase period to the threat, the effective P(k) of an HELWS is essentially 1. Using chemical energy as a primary power source removes the requirement for additional costly and heavy power generation equipment aboard ship. In the context of the foregoing arguments, cost per kill becomes a fraction of the cost of a two-round missile salvo. The technology required to field a shipboard HELWS has been demonstrated by the Navy Mid-InfraRed advanced Chemical Laser (MIRACL) and the Sea Lite Beam Director (SLBD). Its success in bringing down a Mach 2.2 Vandal missile in 1989 was dramatic proof of the effectiveness of such a system. Navy omni-directional vehicle (ODV) development: Where the rubber meets the deck

作者： McGowen, M Hillery McGowen:has served as a Senior Physicist at the Coastal Systems Station of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division for over 30 years. He has been responsible for the development of solutions to some of the Navy's most challenging problems in shipboard and shoreside materials handling ship fuel systems and Underway Replenishment (UNREP). Mr. McGowen has led the Navy's Omni-Directional Vehicle (ODV) technology development program for the past fifteen years. Under his leadership Navy ODV technology has advanced to a well understood engineering discipline. Mr. McGowen has been responsible for transferring ODV technology to industry where it will soon be available for a wide range of commercial applications ranging from forklift trucks to wheelchairs and robotic vehicles.

The Office of Naval Research sponsored the omnidirectional vehicle (ODV) development program of the Coastal systems Station (CSS). CSS has investigated the application of ODV technology to Navy shipboard materials and ordnance handling. Under the Navy program, ODV technology was developed and a series of vehicles were built and tested. ODT technology was demonstrated to be applicable to the shipboard environment and shown to be able to overcome conditions of confined spaces, reduced traction, ship motion, decks heeled at high angles, and on-deck obstacles. This paper focuses on the Navy's demonstration of the capability of the ODV to operate under demanding environmental conditions, ODV mechanical simplicity, and adaptability of the technology for a wide range of applications. Potential commercial applications were identified in manufacturing and warehousing, and remotely controlled or autonomous platforms employed in nuclear facilities, hazardous waste cleanup, and other operations that require the movement and precise positioning of large, heavy objects. The Navy has implemented two cooperative research and development agreements (CRADA) and others are pending for further development and transfer of ODV technology to the private sector.
