Design of eco-friendly fixed bed dryer based on a combination of solar collector and photovoltaic module

A study to develop a convective eco-friendly fixed-bed solar dryer is presented in this article. The aim of this study was to design an efficient eco-friendly fixed bed dryer using solar collector and solar photovoltaic panel with a forced convective system. The design consists of a V-corrugated solar collector, a centrifugal fan, a solar photovoltaic module (100 WP) and a drying unit in the mini-silo model with five layers. The dryer performance test was conducted in September, October, and November 2017 in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. The observation showed that the temperature of the solar collector and the first layer of the drying unit could reach 40-70°C on a sunny day and 30-50°C in cloudy/rainy conditions. The efficiency of the daily collector varied from 20% to 50%. Based on a multiple regression analysis, it showed that some variables (solar intensity, voltage of photovoltaic panel, air speed around the blower, air collector velocity, collector relative humidity, ambient temperature and relative humidity temperature) significantly influenced the collector temperature. The result of drying simulation using red pepper showed that the design has a potential to be used as an eco-friendly fixed bed convective drying. Based on the empirical model, the drying time needed to reach 12% of moisture content (wet basis), respectively, was 5-6 days for the first tray, 8-9 days for the second tray and 9-10 days for the third tray in rainy season. © 2019 Technoscience Publications. Interrelations of rainfall and morphometric characteristics in generating geological disasters of Kuranji watershed Padang city

The Kuranji watershed is one of the watersheds in the city of Padang, which is currently experiencing development due to rapid population growth. This has resulted in land conversion from areas that have vegetation to built areas such as settlements. This affects the balance of the Kuranji watershed ecosystem and can lead to geological disasters. Therefore an initial analysis is needed in the development of the Kuranji watershed in the future. This study aims to analyse the interrelation of rainfall and morphometric characteristics that have an impact on geological disasters. The data used are data of maximum rainfall and maximum river discharge in the Kuranji watershed from 2009 - 2018. DEM data (30x30) used to calculate morphometric aspects, consisting of linear aspects, area aspects and relief aspects. The calculation of these aspects is done by a Geographic Information System (GIS) approach using ArcGIS 10.6 software. The result shows that the Kuranji watershed has an area of 22469,55 ha with dendritic drainage patterns. The linear aspect reveals that it has 1894 rivers with a total length of 774,6 km. This aspect explains that with the many tributaries, the Kuranji watershed has the potential to cause flooding. Aspects of the area explain that the Kuranji watershed has an elongated shape, steep slope and causes a rapid and large run-off discharge. Drainage density is at medium level with a value of 3,45 (km/km2) which is close to the high category. The higher the drainage density the smaller the chance of water for infiltration and the greater the river discharge. The relief aspect explains that the Kuranji watershed has a height between 0-1860 meters above sea level. Relief ratio and gradient ratio have a value of 0,08. Gradient ratios with high values result in fast and swift flow of surface and river water flow. This has the potential for landslides, channel erosion and river wall erosion. After the nuclear accident in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant（FDNPP） caused by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami on March 11,2011,high concentrations of radiocesium(Cs and Cs) in wild mushrooms and lichens were *** clarify which fungal species are high radiocesium accumulator,the plant pathogenic fungi are investigated *** this study we examine the radiocesium accumulation in azalea leaf gall on Rhododendron indicum caused by Exobasidium japonicum collected from different areas with different aerial radiation *** June 1 and 12, 2012,leaves with leaf gall and healthy leaves of the same tree were collected totally from 23 sites belonging to Ibaraki Pref.,Tochigi *** Fukushima *** 46 samples were dried,weighed and *** concentrations of radionuclides of each samples were determined by gamma-ray spectrometry using a high purity germanium *** results reveal that the concentrations of Cs in diseased samples were double higher than healthy samples at least in 22 *** in one site healthy sample was 1.4-fold higher than diseased *** highest concentration was 3327.2 bq/kg for diseased sample and 1766.8 bq/kg for healthy sample from Date,Fukushima Pref.（ca.60 km far from FDNPP） and this highest concentration was 67-fold higher than the diseased sample of the lowest concentration determined in Tsukuba,Ibaraki Pref.（ca.168 km far from FDNPP）.This study suggests for the first time that plant pathogenic fungi which is chiefly due to hypertrophy of the host cells can increase the accumulation of radiocesium.

Dioscorea alata (DA) mucilage is classified as water-soluble polysaccharides, which has potential as a source of hydrocolloid. This research was conducted to investigate effects of salt types on water to tuber ratio to produce the most optimal mucilage yield. This research was conducted using Completely Randomized Factorial Design 3 x 5. The DA mucilage was extracted using two factors, i.e., types of salt (without salt, sodium chloride, and calcium chloride) and water to tuber ratios (2:1, 4:1, 6:1, 8:1, and 10:1). The results showed that the types of salt significantly affect (P<0.05) on starch content, but did not have a significant effect on mucilage yield and water content of the mucilage. The water to tuber ratios significantly affected (p<0.05) the mucilage yield and starch content of the mucilage, however it did not affect the water content. Addition of calcium chloride when water to tuber ratio was 4:1 was recommended to produce the optimal mucilage yield (1.58%) with relatively low starch content (7.86%).

Climate change can cause an increase in the earth's surface temperature and atmospheric CO2. This has an impact on the tourism area based on local agricultural wisdom. The research aims to analyze the level of tourism vulnerability management and formulate tourism vulnerability management strategies to support local wisdom preservation in current farming practices. The method used is mapping, field observations, and interviews with two approaches, namely quantitative content analysis and qualitative content analysis. The results showed that the farming community was only profit-oriented without paying attention to balancing and preserving the natural environment. Most farmers want all agricultural processes to be done instantly or quickly, with higher yields. However, they leave local wisdom values and socio-cultural contexts in managing the rice field environment. One of the components of local wisdom that can still be maintained is the cropping pattern primarily found in the highlands that can still be found. To manage the vulnerability of tourism to support the preservation of local wisdom in current agricultural practices.

The purpose of this study was to compare the presence of Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli in chicken meat, intestinal contents and rinse water at slaughtering place from traditional markets in Surabaya, Indonesia. A total of 120 samples (chicken meat, intestinal contents and rinse water, each of the 40 samples) were collected from the slaughtering place from traditional markets in Surabaya. The samples were analyzed the presence of Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli in chicken meat, intestinal contents and rinse water. Isolation and identification Salmonella *** Escherichia coli were carried out according to the conventional culture-based method (ISO 6579:2002). This study showed Salmonella spp. was isolated by 85.00%, 57.50%, 52.50% of chicken meat, intestinal contents and rinse water, respectively. While *** was isolated by 77.50%, 65.00%, 75.00 % of chicken meat, intestinal contents and rinse water, respectively. Prevalence of Salmonella spp. and E. coli in chicken meat is higher than intestinal contents and rinse water. Thus, it is indicated that the contamination of Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli in chicken meat not only comes from intestinal contents and rinse water.

With the progression of civilization, the harmony within nature has been disrupted, giving rise to various ecocidal activities that are evident in every spheres of the earth. These activities have had a profound and far-reaching impact on global health. One significant example of this is the presence of fluoride in groundwater exceeding acceptable limits, resulting in the widespread occurrence of “Fluorosis” worldwide. It is imperative to mitigate the concentration of fluoride in drinking water to meet safety standards. While various defluoridation techniques exist, they often have drawbacks. Biosorption, being a simple, affordable and eco-friendly method, has gained preference for defluoridation. However, its limited commercialization underscores the pressing need for further research in this domain. This comprehensive review article offers a thorough examination of the defluoridation potential of agro-based adsorbents, encompassing their specific chemical compositions and preparation methods. The review presents an in-depth discussion of the factors influencing fluoride biosorption and conducts a detailed exploration of adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetic models to gain a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the adsorption process. Furthermore, it evaluates the commercial viability through an assessment of regeneration potential and a cost analysis of these agro-adsorbents, with the aim of facilitating the scalability of the defluoridation process. The elucidation of the adsorption mechanism and recommendations for overcoming challenges in large-scale implementation offer a comprehensive outlook on this eco-friendly and sustainable approach to fluoride removal. In summary, this review article equips readers with a lucid understanding of agro-adsorbents, elucidates their ideal conditions for improved performance, offers a more profound insight into the fluoride biosorption mechanism, and introduces the concept of effective spent adsorbent management.

A genomic database of all Earth’s eukaryotic species could contribute to many scientific discoveries;however, only a tiny fraction of species have genomic information available. In 2018, scientists across the world united under the Earth BioGenome Project (EBP), aiming to produce a database of highquality reference genomes containing all ~1.5 million recognized eukaryotic species. As the European node of the EBP, the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) sought to implement a new decentralised, equitable and inclusive model for producing reference genomes. For this, ERGA launched a Pilot Project establishing the first distributed reference genome production infrastructure and testing it on 98 eukaryotic species from 33 European countries. Here we outline the infrastructure and explore its effectiveness for scaling high-quality reference genome production, whilst considering equity and inclusion. The outcomes and lessons learned provide a solid foundation for ERGA while offering key learnings to other transnational, national genomic resource projects and the EBP. © The Author(s) 2024, corrected publication 2024.
