Spatiotemporal Variations of Urban Expansion and its Relation with Geomorphological Complexity: a Case Study of the Yogyakarta Urban Region, Indonesia

Urban growth in Indonesia is accelerating, particularly in areas with complex geomorphological features. This study examines the spatiotemporal variations of built-up area expansion in the Yogyakarta Urban Region (YUR), a rapidly urbanizing area characterized by diverse landforms and significant development pressures. Using Landsat satellite imagery (2001-2022), the study employed the Landscape Expansion Index (LEI) to classify urban expansion types and the Topographic Position Index (TPI) to analyze geomorphological characteristics. The findings reveal that edge-expansion dominated upper slopes, contributing 69%, 75%, and 79% of built-up area growth in 2001-2008, 2008-2015, and 2015-2022, respectively. Simultaneously, the outlying expansion type has steadily increased, particularly in U-shaped valleys, which grew significantly from 51.35 ha (2001-2008) to 109.28 ha (2008-2015) and 219.14 ha (2015-2022), highlighting an escalating risk of urban sprawl. These findings highlight the need for targeted urban planning policies to monitor and control growth patterns in geomorphologically sensitive areas, reducing sprawl and promoting sustainable development.

Land issues present a multifaceted challenge owing to its status as a long-term investment and the subject of conflicting interests, particularly within traditional village settings. Factors such as population growth, alterations in customary land usage, and externaldevelopment encroachment pose significant challenges. A research inquiry conducted withinKanekes Settlement, a community belonging to the Baduy tribe, endeavors to elucidate thegenesis and attendant issues pertaining to village expansion and potential decline. Thisresearch will enhance academic knowledge and offer valuable insights to policymakers,thereby supporting the sustainability of traditional villages. The investigation adopts a qualitative approach with an ethnographic methodology involving on-site direct observation, visualdocumentation, sketching, note-taking, and interviews conducted between 2021 and *** birth process of a village within the Baduy context comprises three primary stages: 1)the proposal stage, 2) the developmental stage, and 3) the inauguration stage. Conversely,no explicit provisions or ceremonial procedures exist concerning the cessation of a village. Villages may become abandoned due to various factors, including but not limited to 1) economichardship, 2) leadership transition following the death of a leader, 3) dwindling population, and4) natural disasters.

Innovation and Well-Being in Indigenous Entrepreneurship in Indonesia: A Capability Approach

This study explores how innovation occurs in Indigenous entrepreneurship and its effects on the well-being of Indigenous communities in Indonesia, a country in the Global South. Previous research indicates that innovation can occur in Indigenous entrepreneurship. However, there is a lack of understanding about how innovation impacts the well-being of Indigenous communities, particularly at the individual level. The capability approach provides a valuable framework for addressing this issue, considering the unique characteristics of Indigenous communities. We conducted a qualitative comparative case study in the regions of Pringgasela and Lepo Lorun. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with community leaders and entrepreneurs from two different Indigenous communities with diverse social contexts and types of businesses. Our research shows that understanding how Indigenous entrepreneurs assess innovation helps identify their unique values in innovation efforts. These values are driven not only by economic profits but also by the preservation of cultural heritage. Cultural well-being is not just a desired outcome but also a mechanism that allows individuals to participate in collective learning and innovation endeavours.

Research has shown that driving-related stress plays a significant role in causing traffic accidents, either directly or indirectly. Motorcyclists often engage in risky driving behaviors due to elevated stress levels. This study investigates the influence of socioeconomic factors on driving stress among motorcyclists. Data were gathered from 50 participants, with heart rate (HR) recorded using the Polar Vantage V2 device. Heart rate variability (HRV) was analyzed in both time and frequency domains using Kubios HRV software. The study employed the Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes (MIMIC) model to explore the associations between socioeconomic factors and driving stress. The results indicate that variables such as age, gender, education level, occupation, income, driving experience, and travel purpose significantly affect stress levels across both HRV domains. These findings highlight the importance of addressing motorcyclist stress through targeted interventions, including educational programs and policy measures that regulate driving duration. Such strategies are particularly vital in developing countries to reduce stress and improve road safety. This research provides a foundation for developing practical solutions aimed at minimizing driving stress and enhancing the well-being of motorcyclists in high-risk environments. center dot A MIMIC model was applied to analyze the relationship between stress variables in the time and frequency domains based on HRV data. center dot The model identified significant causal relationships, emphasizing the pivotal role of socioeconomic factors in influencing motorcyclists' driving stress. center dot The model demonstrated strong statistical performance with key indicators: chisquare = 38.749, GFI = 0.958, CFI = 0.982, AGFI = 0.893, TLI = 0.961, and RMSEA = 0.057, confirming its robustness and reliability.

Optimizing Classroom Lighting for Enhanced Visual Comfort and Reduced Energy Consumption

Educational buildings are recognized as one of the largest consumers of electrical energy. Inadequate lighting can also have negative physical and psychological effects on these environments. Therefore, optimal lighting design that meets electrical energy needs while providing visual comfort is essential. Reducing glare, primarily caused by artificial lighting in educational environments, is particularly important. Glare can lead to discomfort and eye fatigue, adversely affecting learning performance. To measure and assess this phenomenon, the "Unified Glare Rating (UGR)" metric is employed, which helps designers accurately evaluate the level of glare caused by lighting. This paper examines the parameters of height and surface reflectance as variable factors to achieve an optimal design that reduces lamp demand and minimizes glare, using a three-phase methodology: (1) using Dialux software, two primary scenarios-varying heights (2.5 and 3 m) and reflectance coefficients (ceiling, walls, floor)-were examined, (2) across 100 simulations followed by correlation and regression analyses to assess the effect of each reflectance coefficient (ceiling, walls, floor) on illuminance and the UGR, and (3) energy performance evaluation. Results demonstrate trade-offs: reducing lamps from 15 to 9 lowered energy use by 40% but increased UGR from 13 to 18 (approaching the discomfort threshold of 19), while 12 lamps achieved a balance-20% energy savings, a UGR of 14, and uniformity of 0.67. Surface reflectance emerged as critical, with high-reflectance ceilings (>= 85%) and walls (>= 80%) contributing 50.9% and 32% to illuminance variance, respectively. This study concludes that multi-parameter optimization-integrating height, lamp quantity, and reflectance-is essential for energy-efficient classroom lighting with acceptable glare levels, providing actionable guidelines for urban educational environments constrained by artificial lighting dependency.

Refugee tents are essential temporary shelters in disaster-prone regions like Aceh, Indonesia, which experiences a warm and humid tropical climate. Ensuring thermal comfort in these shelters is crucial for the well-being and recovery of displaced individuals. This study evaluates the thermal comfort of refugee tents deployed in Aceh through a combination of field measurements and computational simulations using Ansys Fluent 19.2 (CFD software). Field measurements captured real-time environmental data, including temperature, humidity, and airflow inside and around the tents. Thermal comfort was assessed using the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 03-6572-2001) through Effective Temperature (ET), and the ASHRAE 55 through Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied (PPD). This study also analyzed the thermal performance of alternative tent configurations designed to improve thermal comfort in tropical climates. Two new tent designs were proposed: one with rooftop openings to release trapped hot air and another with both upper ventilation and a double-layer outer skin with a 10 cm air gap. The results show that the tent with upper ventilation reduces the air temperature by approximately 0.5 K and increases air speed by around 0.18 m/s. The design combining upper ventilation and a double skin achieves a greater temperature reduction of 2.9 K compared to the outside environment, with a faster airflow than ventilation alone. These findings highlight the importance of advanced ventilation strategies and thermal insulation in improving indoor environments, offering valuable insights for future refugee tent designs aimed at enhancing thermal comfort.

An examination of the building materials sector raised two critical questions: Why do more firms in the building materials sector not attempt to directly gauge end-users' preferences? And, why do many materials producers employ self-limiting definitions of building materials? The sector was analyzed using transaction cost economics and network theory. A framework was then developed for materials development and innovation. The role of a key actor in the framework, the researcher, was illustrated through a materials study performed in a developing country. In this study, we present a proof-of-concept neuroelectronic interface (NEI) for extracellular stimulation and recording of neurophysiological activity in spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) cultured in vitro on three-dimensional, micro-patterned substrates with customized microtopographies, integrated within a 196-channel microelectrode array (MEA). This approach enables mechanotaxis-driven neuronal contact guidance, promoting SGN growth and development, which is highly sensitive to artificial in vitro environments. The microtopography geometry was optimized based on our previous studies to enhance SGN alignment and neuron-electrode interactions. The NEI was validated using SGNs dissociated from rat pups in the prehearing period and cultured for seven days in vitro (DIV). We observed viable and proliferative cellular cultures with robust neurophysiological responses in the form of local field potentials (LFPs) resembling action potentials (APs), elicited both spontaneously and through electrical stimulation. These findings provide deeper insights into SGN behavior and neuron-microenvironment interactions, laying the groundwork for further advancements in neuroelectronic systems. © 2025 by the authors.

A broad range of simulation software applications has become available for a variety of building performance assessments over the last three decades. The maturation of building simulation into a recognized and indispensable discipline for all professions, involved in the design, engineering, operation and management of buildings has now become the imminent challenge. The two key aspects dominate this evolution process: (1) attaining an increased level of quality assurance and (2) offering efficient integration of simulation expertise and tools in the overall building process. With its original base functionality in the design phase, simulation is now becoming increasingly relevant in other stages of a project, such as during commissioning, as well as in the operational facility management phase. Meanwhile, the 'appearance' of simulation is changing constantly, not in the least as a result of the Internet revolution. This is exemplified by new forms of ubiquitous, remote, collaborative and pervasive simulation. These and other trends and manifestations are discussed in the light of the challenges that the building simulation discipline faces in becoming a daily instrument in the design and operation of buildings.
