Smart Building Hybrid Ventilation System under Wireless Sensor Network Environment

Natural building ventilation is an effective method for maintaining comfortable and healthy indoor environments. This study aims to develop a novel smart building hybrid ventilation system capable of tracking wind direction using wireless control technologies and sensory capabilities. Natural and mechanical ventilation components are integrated to create a highly efficient and healthy ventilation system for a building. With this system, wind speed and direction are measured using a windmill anemometer, and this information is relayed to the control system. The control system uses this information to modify the openings of the adjustable rooftop developed in this study toward the direction of the wind using a set of interlinked devices. This guides fresh airflow indoors, improving the comfort of indoor environments through the circulation of airflow. This is expected to reduce the energy consumption of air-conditioning systems.

An investigation into the shifting landscape preferences of rural residents in Taiwan and their relationship with ecological indicators

Rapid urbanization has significantly altered landscape environments in both urban and rural regions, and these landscapes have been demonstrated to play a pivotal role in human well-being. This study develops a coherent framework that integrates landscape change, landscape ecological indicators, and landscape preferences within the context of the evolving landscape environments of rural communities in Taiwan. Four distinct types of rural communities were selected, and a quantitative methodology was employed to investigate the variations and transformations in landscape preferences among rural residents in the context of landscape change. A qualitative methodology was employed to investigate the relationship between landscape ecological indicators and landscape preferences. The study's findings indicate significant temporal variations in residents' landscape preferences, with landscape beauty, stewardship, and coherence emerging as key determinants in the evaluation of these preferences. Landscape ecological indicators were found to be significantly correlated with variables such as landscape complexity, landscape beauty, openness, naturalness, and comprehensive landscape assessment. The findings of this study indicate that design planners, land managers, and public sector organizations can employ multidimensional thinking in the management of rural landscapes to align with the visual aesthetic preferences of rural residents.

Mars Polar Ice caps have been known ever since they were first observed by Cassini. Robotic exploration missions, starting with Mariner 9, have confirmed that they are composed of water ice. During later missions, instruments such as Mars Global Surveyor's MOLA have established a detailed topography and have estimated their depth at about 3 km in the thickest part, while detailed internal structure has been investigated by MARSIS from Mars Express and SHARAD from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. This analysis proposes to establish a base near North Polar Layered Deposits to investigate Mars' climate, hydrological processes and to test for possible traces of life. The objectives of the mission are to sustain a crew for nine months on the surface of Mars, near the North Pole, and to bring the crew back to Earth safely. During the surface mission, the crew will drill and analyze Polar Layered Deposits in ice samples. Furthermore, because the North Polar region provides an easy access to water ice, this area has the potential of sustaining a long-term human presence. The Mars Polar Research mission shall therefore prepare for long term missions, spanning over multiple crew generations. Indeed, longer duration missions and larger crews should be facilitated by this first mission. This paper describes a mission design for a Mars Polar Research base using systems engineering approach and scenario testing. The goal of the work is to establish a strategy composed of various technologies that have been selected accordingly. The requirements related to crew composition, human physiology and psychology adaptation, quality of communication, challenges and prospects of advancing science, as well as optimum habitat design and its usability, are derived and compiled into mass, volume, data and power consumption. Fatigued breast cancer survivors: The role of sleep quality, depressed mood, stage and age

Cancer-related fatigue is associated with lower health-related quality of life and the majority of breast cancer survivors experience persistent fatigue after finishing treatment. The present study examines age, cancer stage, sleep quality and depressed mood as predictors of five dimensions of fatigue in 70 fatigued breast cancer survivors who no longer evidenced any signs of cancer and were finished with treatment. Discriminant function analyses were used to predict fatigue subgroup membership (higher, lower) from age, stage, mood and sleep for five subtypes: General, Mental, Emotional, and Physical fatigue, and Vigour. Significant discriminant functions were found for all subtypes. Findings suggest that age, staging, mood and sleep are all important predictors, but there are differential relationships when subtypes of fatigue are considered. Given current limitations in treating fatigue directly, interventions targeting mood and sleep should be considered as alternate approaches to reduce fatigue.

Costs of recruiting couples to a clinical trial

Multiple barriers contribute to the slow recruitment of participants to research studies, which in turn extends the time required to translate promising scientific discoveries into proven therapeutic interventions. A small but growing literature is developing on the extraordinary costs of recruiting participants to studies, and thereby demonstrating that underestimating the cost of participant recruitment can contribute to these recruitment problems. These recruitment challenges and costs are exacerbated when the participants' study eligibility is determined by relatively narrowly defined illness parameters. Recruitment challenges are further compounded when dyads (two individuals engaged in a sociologically significant relationship, such as husbands and wives, siblings or extended families) must be recruited to an illness-focused study. For these latter groups, there are no data to guide researchers in how to anticipate those participant recruitment costs. This paper describes the staff costs for a variety of strategies used to recruit participants to a randomized supportive care study for couples who were within 18 months of a prostate cancer diagnosis. Pegged to the value of the U.S. dollar for the period, the average cost of staff time was $288 per recruited and enrolled dyad, plus a promised additional $100 incentive for study retention. Within the strategies used, the staff costs per recruited dyad ranged from $152 to $1688. Accrual per strategy ranged from 0 to 107 enrolled couples. When asked for secondary sources of information about the study, many participants reported more than one source of study referral, reflective of the multifaceted recruitment strategies deployed. In spite of innovative, culturally competent, and broad based recruitment methods, attainment of a diverse sample was difficult to accomplish in this study. Having estimates of the actual cost of recruiting dyads to research studies can help investigators prepare realistic study budgets.

Indonesia is earthquake and tsunami prone areas, included Sumatera Island. Bandar Lampung is also vulnerable to earthquake and tsunami, especially Kangkung fishing village in Lampung Bay. Disaster risk reduction is very important to be implemented in the cases of earthquake and tsunami, which can save more life and build resilience in facing the hazard. This research aimed to study how the knowledge, awareness, and resilience of people in Kangkung fishing village can strengthen the earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction. This research conducted by quantitative methods. Survey and interview of 53 respondents were conducted as well as data collecting approached by purposive sampling. The results found that there is little knowledge and awareness of people in Kangkung fishing village of the hazard of earthquake and tsunami. Therefore, this research proposed a model of "Community-Based Resilience Strategy"Model of earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction. It is a comprehensive and sustainable model of how people take a part in disaster risk reduction by intensive participatory. Conclusion of this research emphasized that disaster risk reduction is a big matter in marginalized society such as people in Kangkung fishing village. The "Community-Based Resilience Strategy"Model of earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction that may increase the knowledge and awareness to become more resilience. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The document shows the methodology of how to improve the capture of the subsoil's heat due to solar radiation. It was divided in 4 sections: a proper selection of advanced climatic alternating system's capacity, a reduction in diameter and length of geothermal coil, the study of the speed heat gain in the subsoil and the thermal behavior as deposit of heat. The wet sand was suggested as the deposit of heat and a series of steps were set to evaluate 3 physical variables. The results show that 4 sections are closely related to improvement in the capture of the heat subsoil.

The refinement stages of house-lifting tradition in Indonesia

Architectural culture of the archipelago is closely related to oral culture, which is obtained from direct experience and develops into a culture. The tradition of house-lifting is one of the architectural cultures that grows orally. There is no theoretical rule that governs the course of these activities. The existing rules only relate to cultural rules, namely rituals in the process of raising a house, as well as the value of gotong royong which is strengthened in this activity. As a region develops, house-lifting activities become difficult to do so that these activities are increasingly being carried out. In architecture, the stage of understanding before implementation is needed for a desired result. The tradition of lifting a house is an architectural culture that does not go through a mature understanding stage before the implementation stage. Usually the perpetrators of the tradition of house-lifting directly enter the preparation stage, where the preparation stage has been combined with the stage of understanding and solving problems at once spontaneously. So sometimes there are obstacles in its implementation. Therefore, this research was conducted in order to be an effort to preserve the architectural culture that exists in Indonesia, namely the tradition of house-lifting. By doing a thorough understanding stage, the obstacles that occur can be estimated and can be resolved before dealing directly with problems that are in the implementation stage.

Open space function in plaza area in Central Java Great Mosque

The plaza area at the Great Mosque of Central Java is a non-green open space of the Central Java Grand Mosque building complex. The Plaza area has an important role in the building, because the plaza area at the mosque is the first place we meet, and becomes the center of circulation and socio-religious activities for visitors. Thus, it is necessary to design a plaza area at the Grand Mosque of Central Java which considers all aspects. Open space has a role as a container that can accommodate certain activities of the community in certain areas, therefore open space has a contribution to be given to humans in the form of positive impacts. This research was conducted at the Grand Mosque of Central Java using qualitative-descriptive methods. This research focuses on studies in the plaza area of the Grand Mosque of Central Java in terms of open space functions. The results of this study, in the plaza area at the Great Mosque of Central Java, show that it has not fulfilled both as a general function of open space and an ecological function.

Architect's vision, creative process and architecture for empowerment: learning from creative process of Indonesian architects

In the course of architect's career, a vision of work is developed. The firm's orientation where the architect works becomes one determining factor of the vision. The vision may change over time based on their professional experiences. At some point, some architects decide to focus only on a particular project, such as architecture for empowerment. This research was conducted by analysing theoretical and empirical studies of architect's creative process. The study was done through a qualitative approach. The participating architects were chosen purposively. Exploration was conducted through deep retrospective interviews. This study aims at: (1) describing the relevance between the architect's vision and his creative process; (2) describing the proportion of combination between problem solving process and the process of self-expression in the creative process in the architecture domain; (3) describing the proportion of combination between problem solving process and self-expression process in architectural creative process for empowerment. The main findings are: (1) every architect develops a personalized creative vision. The architect's creative vision will vary the creative process, although it may not always be the dominating factor of the creative process; (2) in the creative work process, the architect may not always determine the problem solving domination or the self-expression domination as his identity; (3) in the case of architectural design for empowerment, the architect's creative process is dominated by problem solving, even it is possible for the loss of self-expression.
