The effect of earthquake on architecture geometry with non-parallel system irregularity configuration

Indonesia is an area prone to earthquake that may cause casualties and damage to buildings. The fatalities or the injured are not largely caused by the earthquake, but by building collapse. The collapse of the building is resulted from the building behaviour against the earthquake, and it depends on many factors, such as architectural design, geometry configuration of structural elements in horizontal and vertical plans, earthquake zone, geographical location (distance to earthquake center), soil type, material quality, and construction quality. One of the geometry configurations that may lead to the collapse of the building is irregular configuration of non-parallel system. In accordance with FEMA-451B, irregular configuration in non-parallel system is defined to have existed if the vertical lateral force-retaining elements are neither parallel nor symmetric with main orthogonal axes of the earthquake-retaining axis system. Such configuration may lead to torque, diagonal translation and local damage to buildings. It does not mean that non-parallel irregular configuration should not be formed on architectural design; however the designer must know the consequence of earthquake behaviour against buildings with irregular configuration of non-parallel system. The present research has the objective to identify earthquake behaviour in architectural geometry with irregular configuration of non-parallel system. The present research was quantitative with simulation experimental method. It consisted of 5 models, where architectural data and model structure data were inputted and analyzed using the software SAP2000 in order to find out its performance, and ETAB2015 to determine the eccentricity occurred. The output of the software analysis was tabulated, graphed, compared and analyzed with relevant theories. For areas of strong earthquake zones, avoid designing buildings which wholly form irregular configuration of non-parallel system. If it is inevitable to design a building

Monitoring progress objectives in the quality of life of communities requires the construction of tools that allow defining courses of action. The construction of community indicators constitutes a useful tool to define objectives aimed at improving the quality of life. The book summarizes ten successful experiences that demonstrate the benefits of community indicators. Beyond the importance that these instruments acquire, there are limitations derived from the construction and application of community indicators and indices. These limitations become challenges that have been addressed and overcome in each of the chapters. The book shows that it is possible to overcome the obstacles that arise in the construction of community indicators aimed at improving the quality of life. Each of the chapters covers a methodological and, at the same time, operational gap in the design, application and proposals of community indicators that cover different areas and spatial scales. In turn, the book provides a referential framework to deepen the knowledge of localities and particular areas, evidencing that it is possible to generate proposals aimed at improving the quality of life of communities from a multidimensional perspective.

Herman Thomas Karsten architectural masterpiece becomes objects of cultural heritage that must be appreciated, it covers town planning and architectural design. On progress, Karsten's masterpiece hasn't changed much as a result of globalization that hits Semarang city; his masterpiece is considered well, valued by the society, it is possibly because of the conceptual approach that prioritizes and blends the local aspects of wealth. Collecting data including literature study, synchronic and diachronic method, will produce a red thread ideology that influences Karsten's way of thinking. History shows, the architectural work that survives is that have the local aspect in the concept of planning. Through the literature review of the Theory of the City and Local Aspects, and by taking the case on the cities of Karsten design, there will be a relation between the Local Aspect and the Concept of Town Planning by Karsten. Case Study in Semarang city, which is also the best or the most completed masterpiece of Karsten, becomes a reference that corresponds to the literature study, so we get the scope of the local aspect that consists of Place, People and Period always related with cultural, social and economic aspect, and all of these have correlation with the town planning and architectural work of Karsten.

We investigate the development of pre-time signal intersection operating systems for isolated intersections using Fuzzy Logic models. The traffic signal system setting in Indonesia has been using the Indonesia Road Capacity Manual model 1997, for example it is installed at the intersection in large cities in Indonesia. The development of the Fuzzy Logic model is focused on improving the performance of the signaled intersection, using a combination of numerical variable analysis used by IRCM 1997, and the linguistic or traffic behavior variable as the basis of the Fuzzy Logic model study. The combination of the two variables in the Fuzzy Logic model analysis is expected to improve the intersection performance. The Fuzzy Logic model process involves the Membership Function theory as the basis for the confidence level of the traffic variable to be surveyed, and the Fuzzy Inference Engine to measure the choice of combinations of variables that will be selected to make the best performance of the intersection. The geometric of intersection must be control as it involves the input of research data, especially on the condition of the intersection legs and markers of motor cycle-special stopping places, which is a potential of a traffic violation by traveller. The model is verified with fuzzified data from 2017 traffic research survey in Bandung. As an illustration of the majority of intersection setting with an isolated pre-time operating system, there are 60 intersection points or 85% of the total 71 intersections available. This would be a potentially major problem when performance improvements is not carried out. The final analysis shows that the number of vehicles queues decreases while the traffic flows passing through the intersection increases, therefore fuzzy logic model is expected to contribute and to give alternative handling for intersection performance with pre-time operational.

As one of the traditional squares on the island of Java, Alun-alun Kidul Keraton Surakarta faces the challenge of changing its function. The physical condition of the South Square of the Keraton Surakarta is covered by a wall called beteng. In the Javanese spiritual concept, Alun-alun Kidul is connected in an imaginary line to the south coast. In terms of structure, the Alun-alun Kidul has a characteristic Javanese town square in general which is influenced by the cosmological concept of Hindu society. In the past, the function of the Alun-alun Kidul was closed and had a high degree of privatization and became a place for rituals of silence and contemplation of the king. On the other hand, the current physical condition and function of Alun-Alun Kidul have changed. This change is an effort to support the needs of the city today and in the future. The method used in this research is a phenomenological descriptive approach, refers to a grounded theory that does not use the term population but emphasizes a social situation consisting of four elements, namely place, activity, person (actor), and time. The results showed a pattern of spatial use for sacred and profane activities in spatial and temporal characteristics. Physical structure patterns in permanent form do not occur much, but semi-permanent and non-permanent physical patterns show changes in the meaning and behavior of space. These patterns show non-physical influences, namely the influence of cultural aspects, social aspects, economic aspects, and political aspects, as well as the behavior and mindset of the community, especially Surakarta City.

The effect of orientation and façade design on thermal comfort in Nasima elementary school classroom

Thermal comfort is an important element in a learning process. Nasima Elementary School Semarang was built in a densely populated area. To meet space requirements, development prioritizes land efficiency. This has resulted in difference in thermal comfort in classroom. Data of air, humidity, temperature, and radiation is collected and analyzed to determine the effect of building orientation and ventilations design on thermal comfort in classroom compared to Mom-Weisebron comfort parameters. The study found that many classrooms on both the 2nd and 3rd floor do not fit into the Mom-Weisebron standard. The average effective room temperature on the 2nd floor is higher than the 3rd floor. This is due to differences in elevation, differences in the design of the building facades and environmental conditions. The movement of air in the room needs to be increased. A fan can be applied so that the effective temperature of the room is included in the criteria for optimal comfort according to Mom-Wiesebron standards. If the application of a fan has not been able to lowered the effective temperature so that it is categorized as optimal comfort according to Mom-Weiseborn standards, then fan or AC needs to be used.

Background: The PedsQL(TM) Present Functioning Visual Analogue Scales ( PedsQL T VAS) were designed as an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) instrument to rapidly measure present or at-the-moment functioning in children and adolescents. The PedsQL(TM) VAS assess child self-report and parent-proxy report of anxiety, sadness, anger, worry, fatigue, and pain utilizing six developmentally appropriate visual analogue scales based on the well-established Varni/Thompson Pediatric Pain Questionnaire (PPQ) Pain Intensity VAS format. Methods: The six-item PedsQL(TM) VAS was administered to 70 pediatric patients ages 5 - 17 and their parents upon admittance to the hospital environment ( Time 1: T1) and again two hours later ( Time 2: T2). It was hypothesized that the PedsQL(TM) VAS Emotional Distress Summary Score ( anxiety, sadness, anger, worry) and the fatigue VAS would demonstrate moderate to large effect size correlations with the PPQ Pain Intensity VAS, and that patient" parent concordance would increase over time. Results: Test-retest reliability was demonstrated from T1 to T2 in the large effect size range. Internal consistency reliability was demonstrated for the PedsQL(TM) VAS Total Symptom Score ( patient self-report: T1 alpha =.72, T2 alpha =.80;parent proxy-report: T1 alpha =.80, T2 alpha =.84) and Emotional Distress Summary Score ( patient self-report: T1 alpha =.74, T2 alpha =.73;parent proxy-report: T1 alpha =.76, T2 alpha =.81). As hypothesized, the Emotional Distress Summary Score and Fatigue VAS were significantly correlated with the PPQ Pain VAS in the medium to large effect size range, and patient and parent concordance increased from T1 to T2. Conclusion: The results demonstrate preliminary test-retest and internal consistency reliability and construct validity of the PedsQL T Present Functioning VAS instrument for both pediatric patient self-report and parent proxy-report. Dwelling culture of Java community has a long history. In Javanese community point of view, Javanese culture is not a homogeneous entity. There is a diversity characteristic of a regional nature of Javanese culture, which is caused by differences in the natural environment on the island of Java. Dwelling Culture settled in the mountains is a variant form of Javanese culture that has its own uniqueness. This study aimed to describe the local values of the rural settlement structure of in Lawu mountains with Hindu-Javanese culture background. This study used a qualitative approach with case study strategy. The locus of research is in the Cetho hamlet on the slopes of Mount Lawu Karanganyar, Central Java. The results showed that local values in the neighborhoods of Cetho hamlet is based on the Memayu Hayuning Bawana philosophy. These concepts are abstracted into various aspects of settlements in Cetho hamlet such as aspects of dwelling house setting, water management, and ritual activities related to environmental management. Memayu Hayuning Bawana philosophy becomes a cultural space coloring the ecological action of the population of Cetho hamlet. The comprehensive motivation of ecological action ultimately leads to one final goal, namely the desire to maintain a harmonic atmosphere with the surroundings.

Shannon Entropy-based urban spatial fragmentation to ensure sustainable development of the urban coastal city: A case study of Semarang, Indonesia

This study examines the extent to which the Shannon Entropy Index (H) can be used to ensure ur-ban growth sustainability by measuring the spatial dispersion pattern of a built-up area. The Shannon Entropy Index was calculated based on the proximities to the city center (HCC) and the main road (HMR), which divide the study area into 17 zones. Data from Landsat 5-TM Imagery 2011 and Landsat 8-OLI Imagery 2016 and 2021 were used to extract urban built-up areas through image classification using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) Algorithm and measure their growth over time. The results show the normalized Shannon Entropy Index for the proximi-ties to the city center (HCC ') and the main road (HMR '). HCC ' was found to be 0.93 in 2021 and increased by 0.44 during 2011-2021, while HMR ' was recorded to be 0.68 in 2021 and increased by 0.27 during 2011-2021, indicating that urban development in Semarang City has become in-creasingly fragmented. Among the 17 existing zones, the peri-urban areas of southeast part zones in Semarang (III-BP and IV-AP) were found to have the largest relative Shannon Entropy Index (H') of 0.98 and 0.96, respectively, indicating that this area is developing irregularly and spread-ing out compared to the city center, which is unsustainable built-up area growth. We call for an integrated space utilization control strategy between the city center and the peri-urban area. Our study demonstrates the capacity of using the Shannon Entropy Index to detect potential areas of unsustainable development in a coastal city with diverse development dynamics, which can also be applied in other coastal cities to prevent unsustainable development.

We investigated the stimulatory and/or inhibitory role of exogenous SA in alleviating the salt stress (250, 500 mM NaCl) in Pennisetum giganteum (Giant Juncao) through coordinated induction of redox homeostasis, ionic flux, and bioactive compounds. Salt stress radically impaired root and shoot (growth, fresh, and dry biomass as well as tolerance indices), leaf relative water content, and leaf chlorophyll a/b ratio of Juncao due to higher Na+ and Cl- accumulation followed by H2O2 generation, lipid peroxidation (MDA contents), and electrolyte leakage. However, the innate defense response of Juncao counteracted salt-induced damages by osmolytes accumulation combined with orchestrating antioxidants and ionic homeostasis mechanisms. Furthermore, the application of SA had an incremental impact on the development and productivity of high-salinity-exposed Juncao plants by increasing root length, plant biomass, tolerance indices, chlorophyll a/b ratio, and protein contents. Furthermore, SA treatment considerably decreased Na+ and Cl- toxicity by orchestrating antioxidant enzymes, ion transport, and secondary metabolism. Notably, the application of SA substantially mitigated the adverse effects of high salinity concentration (500 mM NaCl), owing to the simultaneous upregulation in enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, nutrient ion flux, alongside chlorogenic acid production. Thus, we concluded that SA enhanced the tolerance capability of Juncao plants in a NaCl concentration-dependent manner. The findings of this study will enable environmentalists and pharmacologists to gain dual farm-level benefits, including animal therapeutics and restoration of salinized soils for arable purposes.
