Generalized finite difference method for three-dimensional eigenproblems of Helmholtz equation

In this paper, a meshless numerical procedure, based on the generalized finite difference method (GFDM) is proposed to efficiently and accurately solve the three-dimensional eigenproblems of the Helmholtz equation. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors are very important to various engineering applications in three-dimensional acoustics, optics and electromagnetics, so it is essential to develop an efficient numerical model to analyze the three-dimensional eigenproblems in irregular domains. In the GFDM, the Taylor series and the moving-least squares method are used to derive the expressions at every node. By enforcing the satisfactions of governing equation at interior nodes and boundary conditions at boundary nodes, the resultant system of linear algebraic equations can be expressed as the eigenproblems of matrix and then the eigenvalues and eigenvectors can be efficiently acquired. In this paper, four numerical examples are provided to validate the accuracy and simplicity of the proposed numerical scheme. Furthermore, the numerical results are compared with analytical solutions and other numerical results to verify the merits of the proposed method.(c) 2022 International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (IMACS). Religious coping and problem-solving by couples faced with prostate cancer

Religion can be an important resource for people struggling with chronic illness. Problem-solving skills have also been shown to be helpful. This study examined whether turning to religion as a coping resource would be associated with better problem-solving in couples trying to manage challenges associated with prostate cancer. The sample was 101 patients with prostate cancer and their wives. Wives completed the Social Problem-Solving Inventory - Revised at baseline (T1) and 10 weeks later (T2). Patients and their wives also completed a measure that included items on religious coping. These items were used to classify couples into four groups based on whether one or both members engaged in religious coping: (1) husband only, (2) wife only, (3) both husband and wife, and (4) neither husband nor wife. From T1 to T2, wives who used religious coping along with their husbands (group 3) showed a significantly greater reduction in dysfunctional problem-solving (specifically, on impulsive/careless problem-solving) in comparison with wives who used religious coping while their husbands did not (group 2). Findings suggest that when couples share in turning to religion as a source of coping, this may be associated with improved problem-solving, but sole engagement in religious coping by wives may be associated with worse problem-solving.

The role of building mass configuration and material selection for mitigating the intensity of the urban heat island

The knowledge of urban heat island (UHI) mitigation for the materials and geometry of urban areas requires enrichment. This study compares to the thermal conditions on two different building mass configurations (Superblock and horizontal residential areas), that involve geometry aspect (density, orientation) and materials aspect (softscape, pavement, roof, wall). A surface urban heat island (SUHI) survey was conducted using Landsat thermal imagery, followed by ground surveys in selected areas. Data collected in both areas included air temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, and globe temperature area. The results show that the superblock configuration had a low SUHI intensity due to the proportional orientation of East-West-North-South (0.56-0.44) and large shading (average of 0.31 m(2)). In contrast, in the dense residential areas, the intensity of SUHI was high because the proportion of East-West walls was wider than North-South (0.8-0.2), and the shading was low (average of 0.15-0.16 m(2)). Fa & ccedil;ade and ground heating occurred owing to the use of heavy-weight materials, which was indicated in the thermal imagery, with a solar heating index in a vertical cluster mass configuration of 21.7 and a horizontal grid of 55.9. Convective cooling occurred in a vertical geometry because the buildings generated turbulence that removed warm air, whereas it did not occur in a horizontal geometry. The convective cooling index for the vertical cluster mass configuration was 0.62, whereas that for the horizontal grid configuration was 0.09. This indicates that regional planning must incorporate geometric and material considerations to control the urban thermal environments.

Climate change affects all areas, including those with low temperature. Wonosobo belongs to highland areas with low temperature. The thermal performance of buildings is influenced by micro-environment climate so that the climate change will affect the thermal performance of buildings. Vernacular buildings are believed to be able to make the occupants comfortable. The vernacular buildings in tropical highlands have either exposed stone walls or wooden walls. The present research seeks to analyze the thermal performance of building envelopes with wooden walls and exposed stone walls in highland areas. Simulation method using the Ecotect software was applied. There are 12 building models with a variety of roofing and flooring were selected. The results of the simulation indicate that the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures of one model and other models is not significant. Warm temperature mostly occurs in houses with exposed stone walls. Highland areas need much warmth so that cold temperature will not disturb occupants.

The purpose of this study is to focus on the indicators related to motivation in the Work Mind, and to organize the concepts by Pile Sort experiments using the sentences of the question items that compose each indicator. By polymerizing the personal conceptual system by Self-Organizing Map, the map of the Work Mind with some degree of completeness and generality is drawn. It is expected that this map will be a material for getting the general picture of the Work Mind and will be treated as a ruler when designing and operating a better workplace. © 2022 Architectural Institute of Japan. The purpose of this paper is to carry out both experimental and theoretical investigations of R.C. short column subjected to horizontal forces under constant compressive loading. Eight specimens with section of 40 cm x 40 cm, height 40 cm and 50 cm and different type hoop were used of the steel cage to detect the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete short columns. Hoop spacing of column, strength of concrete, and the axial load of experiments were the three main parameters in this test. A series of equations were derived to reveal the theory could be used on analysis short column, too. Through test failure model of R.C short column being established, the type of hoop affects the behavior R.C short column in ductility rather than in strength. And the effect of analysis by Truss Model is evident and reliable in shear failure model of short column.

Waste and its environmental impact have driven the search for sustainable solutions across various industries, including construction. This study explores the incorporation of solid waste in the production of eco-friendly structural concrete, aiming to reduce pollution and promote ecological and sustainable construction practices. In this context, two types of eco-friendly concrete were produced using marine shells and recycled rubber as waste materials and compared with conventional concrete through experimental and computational approaches. The results demonstrated that the concrete with marine shells achieved a compressive strength of 32.4 MPa, 26.5% higher than conventional concrete, and a 1% reduction in weight. In contrast, the recycled rubber concrete exhibited a compressive strength of 22.5 MPa, with a 2 MPa decrease compared to conventional concrete, but a 4.3% reduction in density. Computational analysis revealed that porosity affects Young's modulus, directly resulting in a reduction in the maximum achievable strength. This work demonstrates that it is feasible to produce eco-friendly structural concrete through the proper integration of industrial waste, contributing to decarbonization and waste valorization.

Model of Sustainable Urban Infrastructure at Coastal Reclamation of North Jakarta

High economic growth in the city was not balanced with adequate infrastructure provision. Northern Jakarta has been a tangible example of how the development of the city had ignored the environmental conditions, this region has been developed into a very dense and slums areas, and compounded with a huge problem of the exceeding of environment carrying capacity. A massive development of coastal reclamation at north of Jakarta could be used as a model of development based on ecological approach. This study is aiming to examine the concept of sustainable urban infrastructure at coastal reclamation of North Jakarta, which is an approach that integrates urban development components namely city community capital, the city infrastructure needs and ecological city components. To analyze the relationship between these components, this research was carried out by Structural Equation Model (SEM) which is multivariate analysis that analyzes the relationship between complex and simultaneous variables. The application of sustainable urban infrastructure model was done by Goodness of Fit Index (GOFI) value indicators to see how the data support the model on on total of 147 survey respondents. The indicators for each of these six models showed a good fit to ecological city theory, with chi-square of 3.60, df of 4 p-value of 0.45306, and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) below 0.08. Latent variable Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) test showed very good match, model is saturated/perfect fit. Therefore, it can be stated that the data strongly support a model for the latent variables. This model of sustainable urban infrastructure in coastal reclamation can be applied to overcome the problems of urban sustainable development.

This paper reports on the development of a visualization system for architectural lighting designers. It starts by motivating the problem as both complex in its physics and social organization. Three iterations of prototypes for displaying time and space varying phenomena are discussed. Fieldwork is presented to identify where in practice they will be most effective. A set of user studies, one of which is analyzed in fine-grained detail, show how building designers incorporate visualization on hypothetical design problems. This has positive implications for both energy efficiency and lighting quality in buildings.
