Evaluating stakeholder engagement in collaborative research: co-producing knowledge for climate resilience

This study describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of an initial stakeholder engagement experience designed to facilitate knowledge co-production. The engagement experience is part of a collaborative research framework (CRF), which facilitates iterative interactions among diverse researchers and stakeholders around the topic of enhanced climate resilience. Here, we describe the: (1) need for and development of a CRF as it relates to stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production;(2) implementation of the initial engagement experience, focused around individual semi-structured interviews, in the context of a snow-dependent, arid river basin where historical water over allocation, climate change, and diversified water uses challenge the basin’s resilience;and (3) formative evaluation of the engagement experience using an online survey to inform the development of more effective engagement practices. Results of the evaluation indicate that, after participating, most stakeholders understand and recognize the importance of research goals, demonstrate positive attitudes toward collaborative research and researchers, view their contribution of knowledge and expertise as critical to research, and perceive researchers as eager to use their expertise. Moreover, stakeholders emphasized various context-specific goals for knowledge co-production, such as finding innovative ways to adapt to increased competition for diminishing water supplies. To achieve these goals, stakeholders suggested researchers learn about their basin, including its water allocation history and agricultural practices. These results highlight the importance of centering stakeholder engagement experiences within a broader CRF and formatively evaluating such experiences to adapt them to achieve research goals. © 2022, The Author(s).

The influence of social capital on the small-holders empowerment of livestock farming in Sragen Regency

The empowerment of smallholders is part of sustainable agricultural development to increase production. This study aims to identify the characteristics of beef cattle farmers and social capital, and also to determine the effect of social capital on the empowerment of smallholder beef cattle farmers in Sragen Regency. The study was conducted in June 2021 in Plupuh District by using purposive sampling method to determine the location and the respondents. The number of respondents was 100 smallholders who had at least 1 year of experience in raising beef cattle. Data were collected through direct interviews with the smallholders and were analyzed descriptively by using multiple linear regression analysis together with the F test and R2 test in order to determine the effect of social capital on empowerment. The results showed that most of the respondents had a low level of education, and the majority of the respondents' occupations were laborers. It also showed that the respondents had a side job as a smallholder and the status of livestock ownership was their own. Subsequently, the regression analysis obtained Y = 4.517 – 0.525X1 + 0.617X2 +0.153X3 - 0.186X4 + 0.550X5 and it is interpreted that all social capital variables consisting of willingness, openness, encouragement, activeness, and participation simultaneously affect the empowerment of beef cattle smallholders. In the coefficient of determination test (R2), the results obtained is 0.321 which implied that the social capital variable had an influence of only 32.1% on the empowerment of beef cattle smallholders, while the remaining 67.9% was influenced by other variables not included in this study. Therefore, it was concluded that social capital only had an effect of 32.1% on the empowerment of livestock smallholders.

Implementation of organic farming system and consumer satisfaction

The research objectives are: (1) to analyse the implementation of organic farming of Boyolali farmers. (2) to find out consumer satisfaction level of organic rice in Surakarta and *** research location was determined purposively in Dlingo Village, Boyolali and Surakarta. This research used qualitative method with interactive data analysis model of Miles and Huberman and descriptive analysis. The research resulted in the application of organic farming systems by the farmers in the following ways: (a) the selection of locations not contaminated with chemicals, (b) appropriate local types of rice plant, (c) programming of appropriate crop rotation, (d) processing soil with tools not contaminated with chemicals, (e) intermitten irrigation, (f) use of fermented compost, (g) control of pests with natural enemies and vegetable pesticides, (h) appropriate post-harvest handling, and (i) organic rice marketed with the packaging that attaches the SNI organiklogo. The results of research on the level of consumer satisfaction with organic rice are: (a) the quality of the organic rice is 90.41% meaning that the consumers are satisfied; (b) the availability of the organic rice is 73% meaning that the consumers are satisfied; and (c) the price of the organic rice is 60% meaning that the consumers are dissatisfied.

Economic glocalization has been developed in the local food production system in Wonosobo. Glocalization is indicated by the existence of sustainability in the food production system and local empowerment. The aim of this study was to describe economic glocalization in the local food production system (carica and purwaceng) in Wonosobo. The qualitative method used in this study was based on the paradigm of constructivism with a phenomenological approach including knowledge, attitude and behavior. The result of this study showed that local products of carica (Carica candamsrcensis) and purwaceng (Pimpinella pruatjan) were able to compete with global product capitalism. The impact of the glocalization of carica and purwaceng was to develop local economic institutions such as productive economic enterprises and cooperatives. In addition, economic glocalization in the local food production system in Wonosobo had also the effect of the increase production capacity, product development, market expansion, local economy and eco-tourism.

The implication of climate adaptation and mitigation research: capacity adaptation of rice paddy farmers to climate change

Climate change requires adjustment, resilience, anticipation, coping with stress or changes to sustainable agricultural development in socioeconomic and biophysical systems. Climate change affects the plants, livestock and also the environment, thus a reactive adaptation by paddy farmers is necessary. A purposive sampling on 30 respondents who had accomplished the Climate field school (CFS) program in 'Mandiri' and group of women farmers 'Dalima'. The study was conducted from October to November 2017 in Situ Gede sub-district, Bogor, Indonesia. This study used the descriptive analysis with frequency distribution table to describe the respondent distribution of each variable. The research objective is to describe the ability of farmers to adapt to climate change and to realize the sustainability of rice farming. The results obtained are the application of adaptation ability of paddy farmers to changes in rainfall patterns in the form of technical capabilities (knowledge), institutions, social capital, access to business capital is categorized medium, while the technical ability of adaptation (action) is high. Furthermore, the ability of farmers to adapt to the sustainability of socio-cultural lowland rice farming is high in assessing persistence and togetherness are important factors in farming success. The implication is that the technical adaptability of rice farmers will be high if the socio-cultural values and cooperation of rice farmers are maintained as in planning the timing of planting, harvesting and marketing.

The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.
