Empirical testing: The prototyper's evaluation mechanism

作者： Hafner, AN Arnold N. Hafner Ph.D.:is founder and president of Information Systems Research (ISR). He has twenty-five years of experience in systems development and is published in the field of systems development management. He served as corporate research scientist at Systems Exploration Inc. from 1988 to 1991 program director at Computer Science Corporation from 1983 to 1988 director of operations at Republic Management Systems Corporation from 1981 to 1983 and program manager at Computer Science Corporation from 1972 to 1981. A 1962 graduate of the US. Naval Academy he holds a doctoral degree in human behavior and engineering degrees in electronics and communications. He has taught courses on information systems and systems management at most of the colleges in the San Diego area. Dr. Hafner has presented fourteen refereed research papers while publishing sixteen articles and a book A Manager's Guide to Software System Development.

Evaluating complex systems is the subject of this paper, the third in a series investigating prototyping. It provides an interesting and helpful overview of how to evaluate systems prototypes and outlines the iterative stream of developer-user interactions that is replacing older approaches to testing and evaluating new military systems, which promise to reduce the time required to develop and field future military capabilities. Changes to the acquisition process, such as those the paper sketches, will facilitate the nation's rapid transit through its current revolution in military affairs.

Due to the physiological constraints and daily habits of hand movements, the wrist chattering effect (WCE) will inadvertently cause disturbance to the accuracy of fingers’ pattern recognition, when healthy subjects or amputees undergoing mirror training control their fingers according to instructions. This paper proposes a method for estimating WCE angles using a disturbance observer. Based on the Denavit-Hartenberg (D-H) convention and inverse kinematics, the intervals of the WCE during finger flexion and extension are determined. The research objective is to eliminate disturbance terms containing redundant information referring to sliding mode anti-jittering methods, making subsequent machine learning models less susceptible to disturbances.

Exoskeleton robots are currently widely used in the field of rehabilitation medicine to effectively assist patients with hand function loss in their rehabilitation training. To accommodate the physiological characteristics of the hand, particularly the deviation of the joint rotation axis, this paper proposes a hybrid-driven hand exoskeleton system with redundant compliant mechanisms and conducts motion and force analysis on it. The exoskeleton system can independently drive three fingers and drive their joints separately. To verify whether the exoskeleton system meets the rehabilitation requirements, angle verification experiments and object grasping experiments were conducted. The results showed that the maximum joint range of motion of the exoskeleton system reached 66 °, with an average joint range of motion of 55 ° , fully meeting the rehabilitation needs.

There is a growing body of experimental evidence suggesting that the Ca2+ signaling in ventricular myocytes is characterized by a high gradient near the cell membrane and a more uniform Ca2+ distribution in the cell interior [1]--[7]. An important reason for this phenomenon might be that in these cells the t-tubular system forms a network of extracellular space, extending deep into the cell interior. This allows the electrical signal, that propagates rapidly along the cell membrane, to reach the vicinity of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), where intracellular Ca2+ required for myofilament activation is stored [1], [8]--[11]. Early studies of cardiac muscle showed that the t-tubules are found at intervals of about 2 lm along the longitudinal cell axis in close proximity to the Z-disks of the sarcomeres [12]. Subsequent studies have demonstrated that the t-tubular system has also longitudinal extensions [9]--[11], [13].

This paper examines the relationship between user pageview (PV) histories and their item-choice behavior on an e-commerce website. We focus on PV sequences, which represent time series of the number of PVs for each user-item pair. We propose a shape-restricted optimization model that accurately estimates item-choice probabilities for all possible PV sequences. This model imposes monotonicity constraints on item-choice probabilities by exploiting partial orders for PV sequences, according to the recency and frequency of a user's previous PVs. To improve the computational efficiency of our optimization model, we devise efficient algorithms for eliminating all redundant constraints according to the transitivity of the partial orders. Experimental results using real-world clickstream data demonstrate that our method achieves higher prediction performance than that of a state-of-the-art optimization model and common machine learning methods. Architecting a missile system for navy theater ballistic missile defense

He received his bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985 Prior to joining PMS 422 he was the project engineer for the shipboard targeting system used during the Terrier LEAP technology demonstration program. he was also tht project manager for the installation and integration of the new threat upgrade (NTU) and cooperative engagement capabilities (CEC) aboard USS Kidd (DDG 993) the first ship to receive CEC during its development test phase. Mr. Patel's other assignments as NTU development lead engineer uncluded providing development and technical direction for modifications to the NTU engagement system for Standard Missile II and III/IIIA compability. kathrin Kjos:is the program development team leader for Hughes Missile Systems Company. She worked on the initial flight demonstraction phase of the program integrating the kill vehicle and advanced solid axial stage into the SM2 Block III ER missile and served as co-chair of the System Safety Working Group. While most of the theater ballistic missiles (TBM) in threat countries' inventories are of the shorter range SCUD varieties, mid- to long-range versions are currently in development in a number of third world countries. Threat potential exists in the following three battle spaces: endo-atmosphere (0-30 km), high endo-atmosphere (30-70 km) and exo-atmosphere (greater than 70 km). The inherent short range and low speed of endo-atmospheric threats match well with capabilities of SM-2 Block IVA, which equips the Navy with an area defense capability The exo-atmospheric TBMs are longer range and can threaten more targets which may be widely dispersed. Their higher velocities reduce response times dramatically Therefore, exo-atmospheric TBMs create the need for Standard Missile-3 (SM-3), which provides the Navy with theater wide defense capability. Defining its area and theater wide systems as clearly endo-atmospheric and exo-atmospheric systems allows the Navy to use derivatives of the Standard Missile Block IV to take full advantage of the conditions associated with each of these operating zones. Use of an existing missile and ship system baseline also allows use of the existing interface structure to minimize cost. To counter the endo-atmospheric TBMs, the SM-2 BLK TVA upgrades include an advanced imaging infrared (IIR) seeker, an improved fast-reaction auto pilot and a forward looking RE all in the same volume as the existing missile. The highly responsive SM-2 Block IVA missile, complemented with Aegis weapons systems modifications, provides capability against enemy aircraft and cruise missiles, as well as TBMs. Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) replaces the SM-2 Block TV warhead, radar and guidance section with a boosted third stage and an advanced kinetic warhead (KW). Operation in the exo-atmospheric region permits a KW design with autonomous guidance control and divert thrusters for high maneuverability and has the capability of achieving very high interceptor velocities.

Addressing the UN SDGs in sustainability reports: An analysis of Latin American oil and gas companies

This article aims to establish an overview of the sustainable practices developed by the major oil and gas enterprises in Latin America and analyse how these practices are related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7, 9, 11 and 12. The methodological strategy used was the content analysis of the sustainability reports published by companies in the sector. Considering the ten oil and gas companies with the highest revenue in Latin America, 7 of them published sustainability reports in 2020 (base 2019), and these reports were analysed via content analysis technique. The findings showed that 244 sustainable practices were reported in sustainability reports by these seven companies. These practices were summarised by twenty different keywords (the practice can be represented by more than one keyword) and related with the targets of SDGs 7, 9, 11 and 12. It was found that few practices were related with the following targets: (a) greater access of small-sized companies, especially from developing countries, to financial services (target 9.3), (b) encouragement of companies to use sustainable practices and add sustainability information in their reporting cycle (target 12.6) and (c) the rationalisation of inefficient fossil-fuel subsidies (target 12.c). However, one company stands out amongst its competitors, having practices that, on average, were related with a higher number of targets of SDGs 7, 9, 11 and 12. This research has an exploratory character. The information reported here is of great value in guiding CSR actions of companies in the oil and gas sector and future research in the area to discuss how such companies can contribute to targets 9.3, 12.6, and 12.c. © 2022

Admission and Traffic Control Schemes Suitable for QoS Applications in WLAN systems

This paper proposes the use of admission and traffic control schemes for real-time applications. The admission control scheme determines the admission of high-priority real-time applications such as voice and video streams in terms of their bandwidth utilization time (medium time), whereas the traffic control scheme maintains the communication quality of applications permitted admission by restricting other traffic. Owing to the use of contention-based access, a conventional scheme without admission control will degrade the communication quality when the number of terminals using high-priority applications increases. Moreover, only the capabilities (i.e., frame and sequence procedures) of admission control are defined in the IEEE 802.11e standard;the detailed usage in terms of the application characteristics is not specified, and it may be difficult to achieve a sufficient level of quality of service (QoS). The proposed schemes achieve the optimum QoS for actual services. The software used in the proposed schemes was implemented into hardware at the access point, and was evaluated experimentally. Based on the evaluation results, excellent performances with high QoS applications were obtained.

Celebrity disclosure prompts public discourse regarding appearance changes related to breast cancer care: a content analysis of Internet comments

Background: In an op-ed posted on the New York Times (NYT) website, Angelina Jolie disclosed that she carries the BRCA1 genetic mutation and received a preventive mastectomy. Studies have since demonstrated a positive impact of Ms. Jolie's disclosure on breast cancer-related health behaviors. This qualitative study used conventional content analysis of comments to the op-ed to explore intermediate outcomes of the disclosure;specifically, how the disclosure influenced public discourse regarding appearance changes related to breast cancer surgery. Method: After downloading all comments from the NYT website and using an iterative process to develop a standardized codebook, two researchers applied the codes using NVivo 10. Result: Five subthemes were identified in sixty-one comments discussing physical appearance or body image in the context of breast cancer treatment or preventive care: appearance versus health, perception of breast appearance following surgery, partner acceptance of appearance following surgery, beliefs about others’ reactions regarding appearance, and beliefs about reconstructive surgery. While some commenters shared body image concerns following surgery, many were relieved to have undergone the procedure, valuing health over appearance. Most women stated that their romantic partners praised their appearance following surgery, although some worried about how they were perceived in public. Conclusion: This study clarifies how celebrity disclosures about cancer may influence intermediate outcomes (e.g. interpersonal communication and beliefs about appearance-related surgical outcomes) hypothesized to contribute to changes in cancer prevention and treatment behaviors. More research is needed to further elucidate the relationships between celebrity disclosure, intermediate outcomes, and behavioral outcomes. © 2020, © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

This paper discusses a method to determine the optimal node location before a long distance FWA network (22 GHz band, 6.3 Mbit/s) is set. During our 3 years experiment, we found out that the long distance FWA net with 2 links (about 60 km) was down for approximately 42 hours per year due to heavy rain fall conditions. This means that the long distance FWA net is practicable to some extent. We discuss a method to estimate the working ratio between two unknown locations using AMeDAS weather data. By using this method, an appropriate node location can be decided before FWA net is deployed. This approach can improve the working ratio in the sense of link-up continuation.
