This work introduces a scheme of layered neural network training, which incorporates a dynamical model alteration during training, and regularization of the features extracted in the hidden layer units. So far, use of Model Switching (MS), which is a simultaneous search scheme for an optimal model and parameter, proved to improve training efficiency and generalization ability as a side effect. In MS, the operation to switch the network to a different model involve orthogonalization of the features extracted in the hidden layer. Assuming that the orthogonalization contributes to the observed merits, joint use of MS and orthogonalization of the hidden layer feature by introducing a regularization term in the training, is introduced. The network trained by the proposed training scheme is applied to a pattern recognition problem, and some improvement in training efficiency and generalization ability were observed.

In this paper, we looked into two issues in pattern recognition using neural networks trained by back propagation (BP), namely inefficient learning and insufficient generalization. We observed that these phenomena are partly caused by the way the hidden layer units responds to the inputs. In order to solve the issues, we introduced regularization of the hidden layer unit response which amounts to suppressing the correlation among the response of the hidden layer units, and pruning the unit with the method unit fusion. The results of using the proposed technique were compared with the case of conventional technique in pattern recognition problems. From the results of the experiments, the rate of correct recognition increased when using regularization in the hidden layer unit response is performed, and it turned out that the required number of training epochs also decreases.

In this study, small disk ultrasonic transducers were used to develop a very small ultrasonic flowmeter with a measuring pipe diameter of less than 1 mm. The feasibility of using an ultrasonic flowmeter to measure a liquid flow rate below 1 mL/min was investigated experimentally. Calibration results of the developed ultrasonic flowmeter were almost all scattered within the range predicted from the standard deviation of measurements. The flowmeter can stably measure a flow rate of less than 1 mL/min with a standard deviation of about 0.01 mL/min. This result suggests that the flowmeter can be very useful for semiconductor, medical and chemical industries.

We propose a novel architecture for variable comparator named RPCA (Reconfigurable Parallel Comparation Architecture) making full use of the reconfigurability of FPGA. In the RPCA, an appropriate comparator to each task can be chosen and implemented under the speed/data-size tradeoff. An RPCA-based pack-filter prototype using XILINX XCV300E-6PQ240C and RealTeK RTL8201BL is developed and filtering speed of 120ns for 128 IPs and 1,360ns for 2,048 IPs are obtained under the speed/data-size trade-off.

This paper proposes a new criterion to select the mother wavelet suited for precisely detecting characteristic points on signals, such as non-differentiable points and discontinuous ones, and estimating the periodicity of each signal. The criterion is based on fluency wavelet analysis. We introduce the signal space /sup m/S, by which signals are characterized, spanned by piecewise polynomials of degree (m-1) with a parameter of only (m-2) times continuous differentiability and then formulate the fluency wavelet analysis. In addition, we introduce new parameters /spl lambda//sup (1/) and /spl lambda//sup (2/), and then generalize the fluency wavelet analysis. By varying both parameters /spl lambda//sup (1/) and /spl lambda//sup (2/), piecewise polynomials with an asymmetric property can be generated. Generalized "fluency wavelet analysis" can analyze waveforms nearby the above singular points more precisely.

In this work, a photovoltaic (PV) microinverter is developed, which includes an hybrid energy storage system based on a battery and an ultracapacitor that are connected in parallel to the dc-link through two buck-boost bidirectional converters. The PV panel is connected in parallel to dc-link through an unidirectional boost converter. For the dc-ac stage, a two-stage Flyback / H-bridge inverter will be considered, which will be used to inject the available power into a microgrid. The study proposes the necessary control strategies to manage the power flow according to generation and injection conditions, where a virtual impedance loop is incorporated in the control of the energy storage elements. The presented results confirm the suitability of the proposed strategy.

Variable-Speed Teaching-Playback as Real-World Data Augmentation for Imitation Learning

Because imitation learning relies on human demonstrations in hard-to-simulate settings, the inclusion of force control in this method has resulted in a shortage of training data, even with a simple change in speed. Although the field of data augmentation has addressed the lack of data, conventional methods of data augmentation for robot manipulation are limited to simulation-based methods or downsampling for position control. This paper proposes a novel method of data augmentation that is applicable to force control and preserves the advantages of real-world datasets. We applied teaching-playback at variable speeds as real-world data augmentation to increase both the quantity and quality of environmental reactions at variable speeds. An experiment was conducted on bilateral control-based imitation learning using a method of imitation learning equipped with position-force control. We evaluated the effect of real-world data augmentation on two tasks, pick-and-place and wiping, at variable speeds, each from two human demonstrations at fixed speed. The results showed a maximum 55% increase in success rate from a simple change in speed of real-world reactions and improved accuracy along the duration/frequency command by gathering environmental reactions at variable speeds. A boundary tracking method crucial to function approximation-based image coding is proposed that solves the problems caused by duplicate tracking the common boundaries of color regions when methods conventionally applied to bilevel raster images are inappropriately used. Experimental evaluation is performed to verify its effectiveness.

At UT he has served as associate dean of engineering and as chairman of the Systems engineering doctoral program. His research and consulting interests include reliability quality control manufacturing mathematical modeling and applied statistics. Charles B. Davis is an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Toledo (Department of Mathematics University of Toledo Toledo OH 43606). After receiving his M.S. in mathematics and statistics and his Ph.D. in statistics from the University of New Mexico he joined the Mathematics Department at UT where he established the graduate program in statistics. His research and consulting interests include statistical modeling statistical computation simultaneous inference and data analysis.

AbstractGround water monitoring presents interesting statistical challenges, including controlling the risk of entering compliance monitoring, incorporating all modes of inherent variability into the statistical model on which tests are based, and taming the detection limit problem, all while maintaining demonstrable sensitivity to real *** of these challenges exceed textbook statistics considerably, even when considered alone, and good solutions are scarce. When these challenges are combined, the task of developing good statistical procedures or good regulations can be *** article presents a number of realities of ground water monitoring that should be considered when developing statistical procedures. Recommendations made for addressing these realities include the following: (1) the false positive rate should be controlled on a facility‐wide basis, rather than per well or per parameter as required in the proposed regulation (40 CFR §264); (2) multiple comparisons with control procedures are preferable to analysis of variance (ANOVA) for controlling the overall false positive rate; (3) retests can be made an explicit part of the statistical procedure in order to increase power and decrease sensitivity to distribution shape assumptions; (4) commonly used simple methods of handling below detection limit data with parametric tests, including Cohen\'s procedure as implemented in the U.S. EPA\'s Technical Enforcement Guidance Document (TEGD), should probably be avoided; (5) the statistical properties of practical quantitation limits for non‐naturally occurring compounds should be studied carefully; and (6) so long as the facility‐wide false positive rate is controlled, better sensitivity to real contamination is obtained by monitoring fewer well‐chosen parameters at a smaller number of well‐chosen *** evaluation of the proposed revised §264 regulation with respect to these realities reveals that it seems to be a definite improvement o

Aquatic organisms are increasingly affected by polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs), which have the potential to disrupt development, induce oxidative stress, and impair immune function. This study examined the effects of PSNPs on zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos exposed to 0.01, 0.1, 1, and 10 μg/mL from 2 to 120 h post-fertilization (hpf). The findings indicated that developmental abnormalities occurred in a dose-dependent manner, including delayed hatching, decreased survival rates, reduced body length, smaller eye diameter, and enlarged yolk sac area. PSNPs accumulated in the chorion and yolk sac as early as 6 hpf and were detected in vital tissues, such as the eyes, heart, yolk sac, liver, pancreas, intestine, neuromasts, and tail, immediately after hatching. By 120 hpf, PSNPs significantly reduced swimming distance and velocity. Exposure to PSNPs induced oxidative damage evidenced by altered expression of antioxidant-related genes (CAT1, GPX1A, SOD1, NRF2, KEAP1, HSP70, MT), disrupting cellular homeostasis and causing structural and organ defects. Immune toxicity was marked by dysregulated expression of immune-related genes (IL-1β, IL-6, NF-κB, TNF-α, C3B, TLR-1, TLR-3, TLR-4), indicating inflammation and innate immune activation triggered by oxidative damage. This study highlights the interconnected impacts of developmental abnormalities, oxidative damage, and immune toxicity caused by PSNPs exposure, highlighting the systemic impacts of nanoplastics contamination in aquatic environments.
