Dramatic effect of extreme rainfall event and storm on microbial community dynamics in a subtropical coastal region

Extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall and typhoons, are becoming more frequent due to climate change and can significantly impact coastal microbial communities. This study examines the short-term alterations in microbial food webs—viruses, bacteria, picophytoplankton, nanoflagellates, ciliates, and diatom—following Typhoon Krathon in Taiwan's coastal waters in October 2024. Daily in situ sampling revealed a significant post-typhoon increased in viral, nanoflagellate, and Synechococcus spp. abundance. Furthermore, viral, Synechococcus spp., and nanoflagellate abundance increased by approximately 4.2 to 12.8-fold, 33.3 to 160 fold, and 0.5 to 9.4 fold in response to these weather events, compared to periods pre-typhoon, respectively. Modified dilution experiments showed that, before the typhoon, nanoflagellate grazing was the major cause of bacterial mortality, while viral lysis was the main cause of Synechococcus spp. mortality. Post-typhoon, there was a notable shift, with nanoflagellate grazing increasing mortality rates of bacteria and Synechococcus spp., suggesting that grazing became the dominant top-down control mechanism after the disturbance. Our findings suggest that extreme weather events shift microbial mortality dynamics, increasing the role of grazing in controlling microbial populations, with potential implications for carbon cycling in coastal ecosystems. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

The water treatment depends exclusively on the identification of residues containing toxic chemical elements accumulated in NPs (nanoparticles), and ultrafine particles sourced from waste piles located at old, abandoned sulfuric acid factories containing phosphogypsum requires global attention. The general objective of this study is to quantify and analyze the hazardous chemical elements present in the leachate of waste from deactivated sulfuric acid factories, coupled in NPs and ultrafine particles, in the port region of the city of Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Samples were collected in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Corresponding images from the Sentinel-3B OLCI satellite, taken in the same general vicinity, detected the levels of absorption coefficient of Detritus and Gelbstoff (ADG443_NN) in 443 m−1, chlorophyll-a (CHL_NN (m−3)), and total suspended matter (TSM_NN (g m−3) at 72 points on the marine coast of the port region. The results of inductively coupled plasma atomic-emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) demonstrate that the leaching occurring in waste piles at the port area of Imbituba was the likely source of hazardous chemical elements (e.g., Mg, Sr, Nd, and Pr) in the environment. These leachates were formed due to the presence of coal pyrite and Fe-acid sulfates in said waste piles. The mobility of hazardous chemical elements potentiates changes in the marine ecosystem, in relation to ADG443_NN (m−1), CHL_NN (m−3), and TSM NN (g m−3), with values greater than 20 g m−3 found in 2021 and 2022. This indicated changes in the natural conditions of the marine ecosystem up to 30 km from the coast in the Atlantic Ocean, justifying public initiatives for water treatment on a global scale. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Practical formula to calculate solar factor in Semarang

To get the OTTV value, you must first calculate the solar radiation value. Solar radiation occurs as a result of the sun’s heat being exposed to the surface of the building and then goes inside so that the air temperature inside the building gets hotter. The solar factor is one of the elements of solar radiation which is important in determining the overall thermal transfer value for each outer area of a building. The availability of solar factor data in one place is very important to use for building design purposes. Calculating the solar factor is very difficult, moreover, SNI only contains data for the city of Jakarta. There are several ways to calculate the solar factor, with available SNI tables or by laboratory experiments or direct measurements of sunlight. So to make it easier for the designer, we propose to use the rule of thumb formula. The method used is based on local solar factor data, then a radian angle is made from 0 ° -360 °, which results in an ellipse shape in an equation. This paper concludes that the Rule of thumb formula is very helpful for architects in calculating the SF value and can also complete the table in SNI: 2011, which only contains the SF value for the city of Jakarta, meaning that it only applies in Jakarta, so similar research is needed to get the SF value for other cities in Indonesia.

Accuracy, fast and efficiency in performing digital transactions are needed especially during the pandemic covid 19, this need to be done for persevering and improving customer confidence. The supply chain is a concept applied by companies to analyze production needs from raw material providers, transportation to be used, production processes and even determine expeditions to send goods to customers according to a predetermined time. This research has never been done by other researchers where the supply chain process is carried out by a company by involving algorithms in computer science in the form of applying rule based reasoning methods to obtain optimal results. The supply chain information system combined with the rule based reasoning method allows companies to control production management that can improve product quality even up to the marketing model that will be used accompanied by consultants who are experts in their fields and can communicate actively to customers so that customers feel satisfied and feel well served. Computational rules will be run through the system developed in the form of rule based reasoning so that the company can obtain fast and precise analysis to take a decision with the purpose of obtaining the maximum benefit from any activities and transactions.

Background aims: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are recognized as a potential cell-based therapy for regenerative medicine. Short-term inflammatory cytokine pre-stimulation (cytokine priming) is a promising approach to enhance regenerative efficacy of MSCs. However, it is unclear whether their intrinsic heterogenic nature causes an unequal response to cytokine priming, which might blunt the accessibility of clinical applications. Methods: In this study, by analyzing the single-cell transcriptomic landscape of human bone marrow MSCs from a naïve to cytokine-primed state, we elucidated the potential mechanism of superior therapeutic potential in cytokine-primed MSCs. Results: We found that cytokine-primed MSCs had a distinct transcriptome landscape. Although substantial heterogeneity was identified within the population in both naïve and primed states, cytokine priming enhanced the several characteristics of MSCs associated with therapeutic efficacy irrespective of heterogeneity. After cytokine-priming, all sub-clusters of MSCs possessed high levels of immunoregulatory molecules, trophic factors, stemness-related genes, anti-apoptosis markers and low levels of multi-lineage and senescence signatures, which are critical for their therapeutic potency. Conclusions: In conclusion, our results provide new insights into MSC heterogeneity under cytokine stimulation and suggest that cytokine priming reprogrammed MSCs independent of heterogeneity. © 2023 International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy

The use of Cyrene™ as an alternative non-toxic solvent to produce a PVDF-based ultrafiltration membrane was investigated in this study. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were used as organic additives to explore its ability to improve membrane hydrophilicity. The additives were introduced into the casting solution via phase inversion with a combined non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) and evaporation-induced phase separation (EIPS) technique. The prepared membranes were characterized to examine its morphology, mechanical properties, and filtration performance. The results show that the addition of PEG and PVP has proven able to improve the membrane hydrophilicity with the lowest contact angle of 76.81° achieved from the addition of PEG with concentration 3 wt%. However, the nascent membranes were not adequate enough, in terms of its mechanical properties, to undergo performance tests due to its very brittle nature. The overall results from this study demonstrate a great potential as a proposed method of utilizing Cyrene™ as a choice of green solvent to fabricate PVDF-based ultrafiltration membrane with the incorporation of PEG and PVP as organic additives. © 2023 The Authors

Background:Recently, the use of the tumor or its secretions as drug carriers has gradually become popular, with the advantages of high biocompatibility and enhanced drug delivery to specific cells. Melanoma is the most malignant tumor of all skin cancers; it is the most metastatic and, therefore, the most difficult to treat. The main purpose of this study is to develop nanovesicles with tumor cell membrane secretion properties to encapsulate target substances to enhance the therapeutic effect of cancer. Methods:Astaxanthin was selected as an anticancer drug due to our previous research finding that astaxanthin has extremely high antioxidant, anti-ultraviolet damage, and anti-tumor properties. The manufacturing method of the astaxanthin nanovesicle carrier is to mix melanoma cells and astaxanthin in an appropriate ratio and then remove the genetic material and inflammatory factors of cancer cells by extrusion. Results:In terms of results, after the co-culture of astaxanthin nanovesicles and melanoma cancer cells, it was confirmed that the ability of astaxanthin nanovesicles to inhibit the growth and metastasis of melanoma cancer cells was significantly better than the same amount of astaxanthin alone, and it had no effect on normal Human cells are also effective. There was no apparent harm on normal cells, indicating the ability of the vesicles to be selectively transported. Conclusion:Our findings illustrated the potential of astaxanthin nanovesicles as an anticancer drug.

Impact of leachate on irrigation water quality around TPST Piyungan

Rubbish is becoming a global environmental issue as the amount of waste generated constantly increases due to the continuous growth in the level of consumption. The previous investigation reported that the existence of waste management facility known as TPST such as Piyungan in Bantul Regency as a facility for managing rubbish can have a positive or negative impact on the environment. This is because the leachate from the waste is suspected to pollute the surrounding irrigation water. Therefore, this study aims to determine the impact of leachate on the quality of irrigation water around TPST Piyungan using field surveys and laboratory tests. The water sample was taken in Sitimulyo, one of the villages affected by TPST Piyungan activities, and in Jambidan village as point control. The physical and chemical parameters of the water sample tested include temperature, pH, COD, BOD, TSS, TDS, Zn, Fe, Cr, Cu, and Pb. This was followed by the evaluation of the Index Pollution raw quality Class IV, as stated in the Governor Regulation of the Special Region of Yogyakarta Number 20 of 2008 to determine the quality status. The results showed that the status of the water sample is in category IV, which fulfills raw quality (good condition), where point 1 has a value of 0.22 and 0.13 for points 2 and 3. This indicated that the irrigation water quality is not affected by the leachate generated from the TPST Piyungan.

Jagakarsa is an urban area in South Jakarta, Indonesia, that uses groundwater for raw water because there are no clean water supply facilities. The significant increase in the need for clean water due to increasing urbanization threatens groundwater availability to maintain the balance of the surrounding environment. Natural conditions with a deep layer of clay and a dense built environment further increase runoff capacity because water has difficulty seeping into the soil. The intense extraction of groundwater without balancing groundwater recharge results in land subsidence. Until now, there has been no research on this issue. Thus, our research is necessary. This research aims to assess the potential of groundwater infiltration areas in Jagakarsa. Due to limited data, as a first step, we used a qualitative model with MCDM analysis (AHP and MIF methods) integrated with GIS to map potential groundwater recharge areas. The AHP method is explained in detail with a matrix system formula, readers can understand the calculation steps more easily. This study uses five influencing factors: geological formation, land use, slope, rainfall, and soil type. The results show that most study locations have low potential (AHP 74.49 % and MIF 75.25 %) for groundwater recharge. This groundwater recharge potential map was validated using groundwater level measurements. The accuracy of the AHP is 74.51 %, and the MIF method reaches 75.26 %. Therefore, further research is needed to obtain appropriate and effective technology for maintaining groundwater availability. © 2024 The Authors

Efforts to enhance the electrochemical properties of materials have become the focus of numerous studies because these properties are essential in various fields of application. Zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) is a type of metal-organic framework (MOFs) expected to demonstrate excellent performance in electrochemical applications due to its numerous distinct properties. Consequently, various strategies and techniques have been developed to improve the electrochemical performance of ZIF-67. In this study, we employed bimetallic ZIF-67 constructed with cobalt (Co) and copper (Cu) metal ions within the imidazole frameworks. The use of bimetal is expected to increase conductivity and fine-tune the physicochemical properties of ZIF-67. Using coprecipitation methods, we synthesized both single-metal and bimetallic ZIF-67 and compared their characterizations. The addition of Cu metal ions does not alter the materials phase, ensuring compatibility with the single-metal ZIF-67 structure. However, the rhombic dodecahedron morphology of ZIF-67 shifts from a smooth to a concave and rough surface in Co/Cu ZIF-67. Furthermore, Co/Cu ZIF-67 exhibits higher peak current on their cyclic voltammetry (CV) curve by 46.15 μA. The results effectively illustrate the advantages of bimetal on ZIF-67 properties and performance. Finally, this study succesfully briefly demonstrate the potential development of Co/Cu-based ZIF-67 for various electrochemical applications. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
