Experimental investigation of thermal behavior in an active type solar water heater based on phase change material using solar simulator

The weakness of an outdoor solar water heater (SWH) experiments is the difficulty in determining its thermal behavior. The fluctuation of solar radiation intensity causes the supply of energy received by SWH also fluctuate. The result is that the thermal behavior of the SWH cannot be known for specific parameters. This paper aims to investigate the thermal behavior of an active type SWH containing paraffin wax using the constant heat flux method. A phase change material (PCM) inserted into the capsule. The capsules were arranged in a tank to form a heat exchanger (HE). The thermocouples were mounted both on the waterside and the PCM side. The solar simulator installed on the top of the collector, and the SHW system placed indoors. The heat flux and water flow were set at 1000 W/m2 and 2 LPM, respectively. The temperatures of water and PCM for 143 minutes charging recorded. The data obtained were used to analyze the thermal behavior of water and PCM. The results showed that the average heating rate of water and PCM was 0.227 °C/min and 0.205 °C/min, respectively. The value of this adjacent average heating rate shows that HE has functioned well in removing heat energy from water. The accumulated thermal energy produced was 13.08 MJ. Indoor experiments can reveal the thermal behavior of the SWH-PCM systems.

Almost all cities in Indonesia have not had sewer systems that are qualified for the excellent standard. As a province capital, Banda Aceh has also been facing several domestic wastewater management problems. Based on several previous reports, the water body in Banda Aceh has been contaminated by domestic wastewater pollution. Therefore, serious attention is needed to overcome the problem, such as analysis, investigations, and concepts. This paper aimed to review domestic wastewater management in Banda Aceh and describe the concepts that can be used to solve those problems. The analytical methods used in this study were spatial and descriptive analysis. This study's result was the development of concepts of domestic wastewater management system for preliminary planning in Banda Aceh, which has been considered to be needed as the alternative solution.

Changes that occur in housing development will change the zone that should be green open space its function to become a dense residential area. The purpose of this research is to find out how the physical condition of the toilet facilities sanitation development program for the community by the Bandung City government, such as what is the domestic waste disposal system residents, as well as to conclude how much community involvement in protecting the watersheds around the facility is also a communal toilet facility. The parameters used are the physical condition of the toilet, the existence of a septic tank, the use of a watershed, and the level of concern of the community using communal toilet facilities. This research is expected to be an evaluation material for the construction of community sanitation facilities in densely populated areas. In densely populated cities need public toilets. However, due to the lack of community participation, the condition of the facilities became damaged, dirty, and not maintained. The facility has become unsuitable for sanitation; squad latrine models are more widely used. The septic tank, which is supposed to be a waste collection facility, turns out that most domestic waste is discharged into the river through pipes. This is very unhealthy, causing pollution in watersheds. To make a government policy made that disposing of household waste from public toilets with pipes is prohibited because it causes the effects of river basin pollution, posing public health risks.

A review: Domestic wastewater management system in Indonesia

Increasing access to proper sanitation in urban areas in Indonesia has not been accompanied by the availability of a domestic wastewater disposal system that is safe for the environment. The existing domestic wastewater management system is felt to be unable to prevent pollution. Several studies have reported contamination of water bodies in several cities originating from domestic wastewater that has not been appropriately managed. This paper aims to discuss the developments of the domestic wastewater management system in Indonesia by exploring the current conditions and challenges. The service capacity and application of domestic wastewater treatment technology at wastewater treatment plants already operating in Indonesia will be discussed to find out the existing comparisons. Several regulations related to the domestic wastewater management system also be reviewed to find out the policy direction of pollution prevention efforts. From the conditions exposed, it is necessary to evaluate and adjust the existing concepts to the progress of developments in the field. More significant effort is needed to find solutions for problems and realize the domestic wastewater management system's implementation to achieve the desired goals.

Landfill mining dominated by organic solid waste: a review on its benefits, potential and challenges to recovery landfills in growing cities in Indonesia

One of serious impacts of increasing human population in cities is the availability of land, strategic land in particular becomes rare and as a result, its value increases rapidly. Another impact is the amount of solid waste produced which also continues to increase sharply. Although the perception and knowledge of the community regarding solid waste is improving, it does not necessarily change their paradigm, mindsets and behaviors in minimizing solid waste, the landfill is still the final solution to solid waste. In general, the carrying capacity and supporting capacity of landfills in the cities have reached the maximum limit and must be closed immediately. Initially the locations of the landfills were far from city centres, but now generally they are in densely populated urban areas. Procurement of new landfill is constrained by regulations, costs, technical and social issues. NIMBY syndrome (not in my back yard) is the culmination of public rejection, and has even become a vertical conflict between the community and the government. The study of landfill mining, particularly the study of benefits, potential and challenges in choosing landfill mining, which is dominated by organic solid waste, is an interesting study to explore. The use of compost landfill mining as an organic fertilizer for plants, or as biocover is a logical argument for recover or extend the service life of old landfill.

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the association between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and the subsequent risk of developing glaucoma using real-world data. DESIGN:Retrospective cohort study. SUBJECTS AND CONTROLS:Adults aged ≥18 years with a diagnosis of HPV were identified from the TriNetX research network and matched 1:1 to individuals without HPV based on demographics, comorbidities, and healthcare utilization patterns. METHODS:Propensity score matching was performed to balance baseline characteristics. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) for incident glaucoma. Sensitivity analyses and subgroup stratifications were conducted to assess robustness. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Incident diagnosis of glaucoma, including open-angle and angle-closure subtypes, following HPV infection. RESULTS:Among 451,288 matched participants, HPV infection was associated with an increased risk of glaucoma (HR: 1.34; 95% CI: 1.28-1.41), with elevated risks observed for both open-angle (HR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.16-1.52) and angle-closure glaucoma (HR: 1.66; 95% CI: 1.20-2.30). The association was more pronounced in older adults, males, and Asians, and further amplified by comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, and myopia. Results were consistent across sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSION:HPV infection is associated with a higher risk of glaucoma. While these findings highlight a potential need for increased ophthalmologic surveillance in HPV-positive individuals, the possibility of surveillance bias, in which individuals with HPV may receive more frequent healthcare and eye examinations, cannot be excluded. Further studies are warranted to explore causal mechanisms and control for potential confounding.

12-week treadmill exercise program elicits lower energy availability without changes in serum testosterone in male rats

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a treadmill endurance exercise program would reduce serum testosterone and leptin in male rats and assess the impact of increased dietary cholesterol on serum hormones. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley Rats (n = 20) were randomly assigned to a control group (C) or an exercise training group (EX) that performed treadmill running 40 min/day, 6 days/week for 12 weeks. At study midpoint (week 6), rats were randomized to a high-cholesterol (HC) diet (n = 10) or remain on standard semi-purified (LC) diet (n = 10). Results: Results are presented as median [IQR]. At end of week 6, EX + LC had significantly lower body weight (508 [460–527] vs 570 [516–606] g;p = 0.01), mean daily energy intake (76.3 [74.9–82.2] vs 90.9 [86.9–94.5] kcal;p < 0.01), and serum leptin (0.4 [0.3–0.6] vs 3.3 [2.0–4.0] ng/mL;p < 0.01) in comparison to C + LC. No difference was observed between EX + LC and C + LC in serum testosterone (12.6 [6.9–18.3] vs 11.7 [7.6–18.9] ng/mL). At end of week 12, EX + LC had significantly lower body weight (514 [483–568] g) compared to C + LC (644 [575–680] g;p < 0.01) and C + HC (650 [583–702] g;p < 0.01). Serum Leptin in both EX + LC (0.6 [0.2–0.8] ng/mL) and EX + HC (0.6 [0.3–1.6] ng/mL) was significantly lower than C + LC (3.0 [2.2–4.2] ng/mL;p < 0.01). No significant difference in testosterone was observed between C + LC and C + HC (4.3 [3.3–8.3] vs 6.3 [3.2–9.3] ng/mL, respectively). Conclusions: Despite lower energy availability, exercise-induced changes in sex hormones may not occur in training programs ≤ 12 weeks. Lower voluntary energy intake observed in exercise groups despite greater energy expenditure may indicate that lower energy availability in endurance-trained individuals may be inadvertent. © 2018, Springer-Verlag Italia S.r.l., part of Springer Nature.

A conceptual framework on the design of intelligent supply chain for natural fibre agroindustry

Kenaf is a fibre-producing plants that is still highly potential to develop in Indonesia. There is a gap between supply and demand of natural fibre by 90.38%, meaning that it is only 9.62% of kenaf fibre demand met by domestic processors. The main objective of this research is designing an intelligent supply chain model of natural fibre agroindustry. Three sub-models would be developed to answer research questions, i.e.: (1) Developing a sub-model of collaborative replenishment, (2) Designing a sub-model of integrated production and inventory planning, and (3) Developing a sub-model of improvement in supply chain performance. Some approaches that would be employed in this study are Supply chain analytics, Collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment, Particle swarm optimization, and Value chain operation reference. The concept of industry 4.0 that would be developed was an implementation scheme of Internet of Things in production optimization of dried kenaf fibre through employment of sensors and image processing. Indicators of success factor for this research that were established are: (1) Enhancement in supply chain efficiency and effectivity, (2) Enhancement in satisfaction level among supply chain actors, and (3) Achievement of level optimization and inventory cost minimization, and (4) Usefulness of a web based NFiSCA application.

Strength and Durability of Six Fast-Growing Timber Against Marine Biota as an Alternative to Hull Materials

Ship hulls are vulnerable to attack by marine animals (barnacles and sea worms). The current scarcity of natural forest wood supplies has a negative impact on the fulfillment of good quality wood raw materials for wooden hull, especially types of Meranti batu (Shorea platyclados). The research aims to test the strength and durability of six fast-growing wood species as an alternative material for ship *** method used is a laboratory test and field *** strength test based on SNI ISO 16978-2010, wood durability test based on SNI 01-7207-2006. The field test was carried out by submerging the specimens for six months in sea water, Kubu District, Rokan Hilir, Riau Province, Indonesia. Six types of wood tested were: Acacia (Acacia Mangium), Geronggang (Cratoxylon arborencens), Trembesi (Samanea saman), Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus), Mahang (Macaranga gigantea ***), and Jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba (Miq)). Sea water immersion test results obtained that the wood Jabon, Acacia Mangium, Ekaliptus, and Geronggang not significantly different. The results of research on the flexural strength, Acacia Mangium wood and eucalyptus have strength equivalent to Meranti batu wood, so that it has the potential as an alternative material for hull material.

Kawi Language is a kind of language which has developed in Java during the Hindu-Buddhist era in the ancient Indonesian archipelago. As the time passed, Kawi began to come to extinction. To overcome this, preservation of Kawi language can be done by enhancing the understanding of culture through the use of technology. Technology that can be used for cultural preservation is one of NLP based applications such as Kawi Language to Bahasa Translator Application which is developed in this research. The translator application is an application that translates from one language to another. The result of translation of the translator application is a language that is easy to understand by the people or commonly used language. This translator application is developed to processes Kawi Language text into bahasa based on search method which each word inserted. The stemming method used is Bobby Nazief & Mima Adriani Algorithm using Kawi Language rule. The translated Kawi Language text can be a word, sentence or paragraph with the result of the Text in Bahasa as well as words, sentences or paragraphs. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2018.
