Key factors affecting people's willingness to participate in water resource protection in the agricultural Ba River Basin – in the highlands of Vietnam

Willingness to participate (WP) in community-based management depends on various factors such as a sense of community, perceptions, beliefs, and demographic characteristics. This study first evaluates the WP of locals (n = 100) in water management in the Ba River Basin – Highlands of Vietnam, where ethnic minority groups are living and working in the agricultural sector. The multivariable linear regression model is applied to explain WP through the factors including the sense of community (SC), dependance on river water (DW), perceptions of current water resource management (PW), level of income (IN), gender (GE), education levels (ED), and place of residence (PR). The results showed that the final regression model explains 67.9% of the variation in WP levels (R2 = 0.679, p 0.05) in this model. Sense of community and perceptions greatly influence community participation. To boost willingness, periodic training and campaigns are needed. Additionally, improving legal frameworks can encourage greater community involvement in water management programs. © 2025 The Authors.

Purpose: This viewpoint aims to present reflections on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic scenario and the entrepreneurial potential of Brazilian students. Guidelines are proposed to support debates in the academic environment and better prepare future entrepreneurs to the labour market. Design/methodology/approach: Since this is a viewpoint article, some statements presented here are characterised by the authors' opinions. However, for a better foundation, bibliographic research related to the theme was carried out. Findings: In the authors' point of view, the COVID-19 pandemic scenario may negatively influence the decisions of Brazilian students that are characterised as potential future entrepreneurs. Educators can use the guidelines presented here to conduct debates with students in order to clarify aspects related to profile, behaviour and other issues. Originality/value: By understanding better entrepreneurial aspects in the COVID-19 pandemic scenario, Brazilian students can make better decisions. sustainable innovation has gained prominence in recent years, due to the demands imposed by global competition, social pressures and the needs of consumers and the environment. Decision-making processes about sustainable innovation are complex and often require auxiliary instruments to reduce uncertainties. Multicriteria decision aid (MCDA) methods can be a useful tool to make these kinds of decisions more assertive. This article presents the main discussions and theoretical approaches through bibliometrics on the application of MCDA methods in the context of sustainable innovations. We used the R package Bibliometrix library to organize the data of the publications and perform the processing for the generated analyzes. The bibliometric analysis provided an overview about the use of MCDA in sustainable innovations (MIS) and it presents citation analysis;identification of central authors through co-citation analysis;main topics, conceptual structure and thematic evolution of the literature by co-word analysis. As main results, we identified the main trends in MIS: there has been a substantial increase in publications on this theme, and the most explored focuses are “product development, production and distribution” and “environmental or social impact assessment” and there is an opportunity to further explore the focuses of “evaluation or selection of projects, suppliers or resources”, “product life cycle management or assessment” and “definition of decision criteria and standards for sustainable innovation performance”. In addition, several MCDA tools have been successfully used for studies of sustainable innovations, demonstrating that there is no preferable method to use for a given focus. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

The UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable Development has established commitments among Member States. These commitments are present in 17 sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 global action targets to be achieved up to 2030. Social inclusion, environmental sustainability and good governance are among these commitments, which make them impact the business sector, such as water consumption and women’s participation in the workforce and leadership positions. The present study proposes a hybrid ensemble-Machine Learning-Dominance-based Rough Set Approach (E-ML-DRSA) model in the assessment of risks in sustainability and performance of electric power distribution companies in Brazil. The study uses 62 indicators of sustainability and performance, considering the period of eight years. The proposed hybrid model enables a more effective risk management of companies with basis on previous and simulated data, higher performance classification algorithms (accuracy and sensitivity) and conditional risk matrix. © 2024, The Authors. This article aims to list environmental practices used by Latin American companies in the pulp and paper industry, to create a list, through a scientific method, that can direct other researchers and managers interested in the subject. The research strategies used were bibliographic research and content analysis. The content analysis used 36 sustainability reports published by Latin American companies in the industry between 2018 and 2019. Although 264 companies were mapped, only 36 of them presented sustainability report possible to be accessed. Through the sample of 36 sustainability reports, 36 sustainable environmental practices were identified that could be grouped into five groups, namely: (1) Reuse of waste, efficiency in the production process and effluents treatment;(2) Preservation and area recovery;(3) Energy efficiency;(4) Initiatives with stakeholders;(5) Control of gas emission. Despite the exploratory nature, the information presented here can be used by managers in the area and researchers interested in improving environmental practices of the pulp and paper industry. © 2021 The Author(s)

Addressing the UN SDGs in sustainability reports: An analysis of Latin American oil and gas companies

This article aims to establish an overview of the sustainable practices developed by the major oil and gas enterprises in Latin America and analyse how these practices are related to the sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7, 9, 11 and 12. The methodological strategy used was the content analysis of the sustainability reports published by companies in the sector. Considering the ten oil and gas companies with the highest revenue in Latin America, 7 of them published sustainability reports in 2020 (base 2019), and these reports were analysed via content analysis technique. The findings showed that 244 sustainable practices were reported in sustainability reports by these seven companies. These practices were summarised by twenty different keywords (the practice can be represented by more than one keyword) and related with the targets of SDGs 7, 9, 11 and 12. It was found that few practices were related with the following targets: (a) greater access of small-sized companies, especially from developing countries, to financial services (target 9.3), (b) encouragement of companies to use sustainable practices and add sustainability information in their reporting cycle (target 12.6) and (c) the rationalisation of inefficient fossil-fuel subsidies (target 12.c). However, one company stands out amongst its competitors, having practices that, on average, were related with a higher number of targets of SDGs 7, 9, 11 and 12. This research has an exploratory character. The information reported here is of great value in guiding CSR actions of companies in the oil and gas sector and future research in the area to discuss how such companies can contribute to targets 9.3, 12.6, and 12.c. © 2022

This study aims to analyze the reasons that motivate Brazilian companies to implement Quality management systems, according to ISO 9001:2015 requirements. Based on information collected in the literature, a questionnaire was developed and answered by professionals that work with the mentioned standard in their companies. An Exploratory Factor Analysis was conducted with the collected data to group the validated variables into two constructs that present the most part of information variance. These constructs were entitled “internal improvements related motives” and “market related motives”. The findings of this research confirm and complement previous studies performed in Brazil and in other countries. © 2021 American Society for Quality.

Water quality in rivers is deteriorating in urban and rural areas due to natural and anthropogenic factors. Understanding how changes and factors affect river water quality is crucial for managing water quality in river basins. This review focuses on analyzing key factors affecting water quality, and the temporal and spatial variations of water quality in rivers flowing in rural and urban areas. Natural processes such as weathering of rocks, evapotranspiration, atmospheric deposition, climate change, and natural disasters cause changes in the quality of river water. Anthropogenic factors could stem from industrial effluents, domestic activities, and agricultural activities such as the application of fertilizers, manures, pesticides, animal husbandry activities, irrigation practices, deforestation, and aquaculture. The seasonal variations in river water quality are discussed, and land use or cover could affect water quality parameters in a negative or positive way. In addition to traditional contaminants such as biodegradable organic matter, heavy metals, and pathogens, emerging and persistent pollutants such as organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), and phamaceutic active compounds (PhACs) has been found in many rivers, which could pose a threat to human and animal health. The comparison of key factors and parameters in urban and rural areas is also clarified, which provides authorities and policymakers with a deep understanding and supports decision-making in sustainable water management. © 2023 The Authors

This article develops a mechanism for automatically classifying rewarded collaboration proposals. The research’s purpose is to increase transparency in the rewarded collaboration process, thereby inviting more collaboration proposals, to aid in the fight against criminal organizations. The research focuses on critical facets of the public security system and of the organized crime in Brazil. Through rewarded collaboration, a new approach to plea bargaining is achieved that helps detect, disrupt, and ultimately dismantle illicit operations. This multi-criteria approach enables the consideration of the interests of detainees, the priorities of police institutions, and the perspective of the community. This approach results in the formation of a holistic understanding of the issue, taking into account the costs and benefits to society of punishing defendants whose guilt can be established. Composition of Probabilistic Preferences Trichotomic is the multi-criteria method employed to take imprecision into consideration while performing classification into predetermined classes. It enables the evaluation of each proposal independently. This boosts the system’s objectivity and consequently its attractiveness. Taking the interaction between the criteria into consideration, the analysis naturally applies to any number of evaluation criteria and individuals involved in the investigated crimes. Novel forms of interaction modeling are compared in practical instances.
