The Difference of Thermal Performance between Houses with Wooden Walls and Exposed Brick Walls in Tropical Coasts

The purpose of this study is to analyze differences between brick and wood houses related to the thermal comfort of the occupants. The measurement results are compared with a test in the field. The results of measurements of thermal variables of the formula's Fanger show that eight houses with wooden walls have an average result of 1.01, meanwhile eight houses with exposed bricks wall have an average result of 1.71. The results of field measurements indicate that occupants in houses with wooden walls feel more comfortable than occupants in houses with exposed brick walls.

Indoor environmental conditions have significant effects on the user, in terms of comfort, satisfaction, and well-being. Even though the facade is one of the main systems that shape the indoor environment, there is a lack of research on how it affects the user. In work environments, not only indoor conditions but also the daily in-teractions with the building's facade (i.e. opening a window, closing a window blind, or simply looking through a window) have a consequential impact on the user experience. In that respect, as a part of ongoing doctoral research, an international online survey study was conducted to investigate users' experiences in their work environments, related to the building's facade. The questionnaire was structured not only to understand the users' current experiences but also their anticipations in terms of a preferred user experience concept. Hence, portrays a perspective on the question: what do users want from the facade that they are interacting with, in work environments? This paper primarily presents the effects of the human factors on the preference levels of different user experiences and interpretation of the results leads to the determination of human-centred performance criteria for adaptive facade design.

Religious tourist activity in Majasto Cemetery (Sukoharjo Regency – Central Java) have no significant increase. The limited and mythical attraction cause this problem. Therefore, this research focus to identify the uniqueness of cemetery Majasto for recommendation the expand of attraction, especially for support the smart people development. After analysis used the descriptive method, derivate 4 recommendation to expand the attraction, that are: (1) History education; (2) Education for shrine or cemetery pilgrimage, both based on the Islamic teaching and the Islamic of Javanese tradition; (3) Javanese and Islamic architecture education; and (4) Green architecture education.

Factory buildings, pre-fabricated housing, and traditional terraced houses are constructed in a manner that involves an airtight condition along the length of these buildings, which inhibits the exchange of cool and warm air between indoor and outdoor environments. This results in stagnant and poorly ventilated indoor environments, as well as environmental issues such as poor indoor air quality. Present solutions for the ventilation of indoor environments are generally based on the installation of air conditioning equipment. However, the operation of air conditioners consumes large quantities of electricity, which creates high electrical costs for building management units. Furthermore, the operation of air conditioners is also associated with a variety of economic and environmental quality issues. In this work, we developed an active wind tracking system for building ventilation. In this system, wind speed and direction are measured and transmitted to a control system that controls the adjustable roof openings developed in this study. These openings are then pointed towards the wind using a set of interlinked equipment to draw airflow indoors, thus improving the air quality of indoor environments. This is expected to reduce the frequency of use of air conditioners and save energy.

In this research, we focus on the joint mortar part of the tile, create a pseudo floating tile, and propose a dynamic impact test and an out-of-plane displacement measurement method. From the results, the peeling properties of the tile finish were quantitatively clarified from the dynamic impact test and the measurement of the out-of-plane residual displacement. We also examined the effectiveness of the method of repairing floating tiles. © 2023 Architectural Institute of Japan. All rights reserved.

Several façade types for mitigating urban heat island intensity

The phenomenon of elevated air temperatures in urban regions, known as urban heat islands (UHI), is closely linked to the thermal properties of building façades in those areas. Heavyweight materials, such as concrete and brick, absorb and release the heat escalating the intensity of UHI. We studied the thermal behaviour of façade types based on various concepts, namely, thermal absorption (brick wall), thermal utilisation (green wall and submerged aluminium composite panels [ACP]), reflection (reflective coating), insulation (expanded polystyrene), and shading or covering (ACP and cement board panel), on the east and west walls of a building. Direct field measurements included surface temperature, solar irradiation, cloud cover, globe temperature, air temperature, wind velocity, and relative humidity near the surface, were conducted in April and July 2021 (7 d monitoring period) on the walls of 90 × 90 cm specimens. The effectiveness of mitigating the urban heat island intensity (UHII) of the façade types in a residential area was simulated using ENVI-met 4.4.5 software. The results showed that heat utilisation (green walls) and reflection effectively reduced UHII. Green walls lowered temperatures by an average of 0.65 °C during the monitoring period (maximum 0.99 °C) through evapotranspiration, whereas the reflective coating reduced by 0.53 °C on average (maximum 1.89 °C) during low sun angles in the morning and afternoon. These findings will be helpful for architects, urban planners, and policymakers to contribute to UHI mitigation. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Quantifying influence of rainfall events on outdoor thermal comfort in subtropical dense urban areas

Existing research on outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas focuses on meteorological factors such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and radiation on sunny or cloudy days. However, climate conditions before, during, and after rainfall events can cause changes in meteorological factors in subtropical regions. Rainfall is an atmospheric condition with a large influence on thermal comfort, particularly in subtropical areas with abundant rain. Big data on temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, precipitation, and total cloud cover from the Taipei Weather Station under the Central Weather Administration from June to August each year from 2011 to 2020 were analyzed, dividing the data into categories based on precipitation. Using a k-means clustering algorithm, we quantified the relationships between meteorological factors and apparent temperature as well as physiological equivalent temperature in different rainfall scenarios. The results indicate that rainfall in the summers of subtropical oceanic climates indeed influence outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas: 37.7% of the rainfall weather patterns improved thermal comfort and 62.3% of the rainfall weather patterns reduced thermal comfort. RWP 46 represent the weather conditions that most significantly improve thermal comfort, at 1:00 PM, with a rainfall of 15 mm, there is a decrease in ΔAT by 14.4 °C and ΔPET by 22.1 °C. With the hot, humid, and rainy climate conditions in Taiwan, apparent temperature is the most accurate index of thermal comfort. KEY POLICY HIGHLIGHTS Rainfall events may affect outdoor thermal comfort in subtropical cities. Different rainfall weather patterns have different impacts on urban outdoor thermal environments. 62.3% of rainfall weather patterns resulted in worsened thermal comfort, for low and concentrated rainfall resulting in a stuffier thermal environment. © 2024 The Author(s). The application of adding oyster shells and rice straw into cement has proven its applicability in past researches. This project not only focuses on the engineering study of the application of adding oyster shells into cement to make lightweight bricks, but also discusses the feasibility of replacing fine aggregates with the unique agricultural waste of Kinmen Island, sorghum. The study is mainly about achieving the best mixing ratio of ground oyster shells and sorghum to replace fine aggregate. The present study found that when the best mixing ratio of replacing fine aggregates with ground oyster shell and sorghum is achieved, the compaction degree was not significantly decreased. Fine aggregates replaced by up to 10-15% waste products-that is, made from 10% ground oyster shells or mixing 10% ground oyster shells and sorghum (5%) without other admixtures, meet the Chinese National Standards (CNS) and a lower thermal conductivity. Replacing fine aggregates with Kinmen's fishery and agricultural waste, oyster shells and sorghum, and adding to generic non-structural light bricks not only decreases the use of cement mortar, imported partition bricks are replaced in addition to decreasing the overall carbon footprint of the island, balancing the island's annual agricultural and fishery waste and needed construction materials, and solving environmental pollution problems stemming from business waste. The limited supply of clean water led to some residents in the city, as well as business and trade areas using underground water. Optimization of land used in the development of new towns and expanded impervious land surface, thus reducing infiltration capacity, resulting in an increased volume of runoff. The use of underground water and the reduced infiltration of rainwater resulted in a decrease in the underground water table. To maintain the underground water table and preventing land subsidence resulted from the use of underground water as raw material for clean water. The effort required is how doing underground water conservation. This paper discusses the development of new towns to assess the natural landscape as underground water conservation efforts on the development of the new town. The research method uses a quantitative approach to calculate the potential runoff using a soil conservation service, while to analyze the trend of changes in land cover using temporal spatial analysis, using descriptive analysis. The data used satellite imagery. The study found open green spaces, water bodies, and infrastructure in the form of green corridors can reduce runoff and maintain the underground water table.

Pongkor Mining Ecotourism Area has a diverse landscape character as a potential landscape resources for the development of ecotourism destination. This area is part of the Mount of Botol Resort, Halimun Salak National Park (HSNP). This area also has a fairly high biodiversity. This study aims to identify and analysis the category of landscape character in the Pongkor Mining Ecotourism Area for the development of ecotourism destination. This study used a descriptive approach through field surveys and interviews, was carried out through two steps : 1) identify the landscape character, and 2) analysis of the landscape character. The results showed that in areas set aside for ecotourism destination in Pongkor Mining, landscape character category scattered forests, tailing ponds, river, plain, and the built environment. The Category of landscape character most dominant scattered in the area is forest, here is the river, plain, tailing ponds, the built environment, and plain. The landscape character in a natural environment most preferred for ecotourism activities. The landscape character that spread in the natural environment and the built environment is a potential that must be protected and modified such as elimination of incongruous element, accentuation of natural form, alteration of the natural form, intensification and enhanced visual quality intensively to be developed as a ecotourism destination area.
