Modifying the Contact Perimeter Approach for Measuring Urban Compactness Gradients in the Joglosemar Urban Region, Indonesia

The rapid and uncontrolled urbanization in developing countries creates new challenges for the government, as is the case with mega-urbanization in the Joglosemar Urban Region of Indonesia. This study employs remote sensing data to assess discrete compactness with a contact perimeter approach to measure the spatial pattern of three urban areas as the urban growth centers of the Joglosemar Urban Region: Semarang Metropolitan Region (SMR), Surakarta Urban Region (SUR), and Yogyakarta Urban Region (YUR). The contact perimeter approach for measuring urban compactness must be adjusted to accommodate complex shapes (cell arrangement). This study modifies discrete compactness (C1 and C2) to improve the applicability of urban compactness measurement. We use 2022 Sentinel satellite imagery data and 2000 Landsat 7 ETM + data. The results show that in 2022, the YUR has the most significant value of 0.26, followed by the SMR (0.24) and the SUR (0.23). Between 2002 and 2022, the SMR experienced a significant decrease of 0.1 in urban compactness, indicating that the SMR develops in a compact form. This study can support the government in controlling growth and suppressing sprawl development in the future.

Spatiotemporal Variations of Urban Expansion and its Relation with Geomorphological Complexity: a Case Study of the Yogyakarta Urban Region, Indonesia

Urban growth in Indonesia is accelerating, particularly in areas with complex geomorphological features. This study examines the spatiotemporal variations of built-up area expansion in the Yogyakarta Urban Region (YUR), a rapidly urbanizing area characterized by diverse landforms and significant development pressures. Using Landsat satellite imagery (2001-2022), the study employed the Landscape Expansion Index (LEI) to classify urban expansion types and the Topographic Position Index (TPI) to analyze geomorphological characteristics. The findings reveal that edge-expansion dominated upper slopes, contributing 69%, 75%, and 79% of built-up area growth in 2001-2008, 2008-2015, and 2015-2022, respectively. Simultaneously, the outlying expansion type has steadily increased, particularly in U-shaped valleys, which grew significantly from 51.35 ha (2001-2008) to 109.28 ha (2008-2015) and 219.14 ha (2015-2022), highlighting an escalating risk of urban sprawl. These findings highlight the need for targeted urban planning policies to monitor and control growth patterns in geomorphologically sensitive areas, reducing sprawl and promoting sustainable development.

Green infrastructure modelling for UHI control to urban thermal comfort: a case study of Temanggung urban area

The Temanggung urban area in Central Java (Indonesia) already has considerable urban Green Infrastructure (GI), but the phenomenon of Urban Heat Island (UHI) has expanded to 268% in the last seven years. This study explores the theoretical gaps related to urban thermal comfort by combining tree management modelling as the independent variable and existing urban morphology as the dependent variable to identify the right place for the right tree using ENVI-met v5 simulations. We use the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) to determine urban thermal comfort, and our results showed a temperature decrease from 37 & DEG;C (strong heat stress) to 32.5 & DEG;C-35.5 & DEG;C (moderate heat stress) and an average decrease of 1 & DEG;C-3.5 & DEG;C. These results were obtained by simulating the placement pattern of substations, land use zoning, tree size composition, paying attention to the type of road surface material, wind direction and speed and direction of road orientation, average air temperature, and location of building masses. This study provides a basis for consideration to assist local governments and researchers in managing GI in Temanggung Urban Area to create comfortable urban thermal comfort for their residents.

Impacts of rapid urbanization on spatial dynamics of land use-based carbon emission and surface temperature changes in the Semarang Metropolitan Region, Indonesia

This study explores the relationship between carbon emission patterns and the land surface temperature (LST) changes due to the rapid urbanization in the Semarang Metropolitan Region (SMR), an Indonesian area that has experienced rapid urban growth compared to other urban areas. This research used the stock-difference and gain-loss methods to calculate carbon stocks and emissions. Then, band 6 on Landsat 5 TM (2008) and band 10 on Landsat 8 OLI (2013 and 2018) were used to calculate the LST changes. These results showed that the peri-urban area had a more significant change. The correlation between carbon emissions and an increased SMR temperature correlates to 0.646. This shows that the carbon emissions pattern promotes temperature dynamics in the SMR. Furthermore, this study proved the release of carbon emissions in line with LST dynamics spatially. In this case, this study proved that rapid urbanization in the SMR promotes both carbon emission and LST. Those changes are also affected by vegetation canopy availability and other activities. As a result, the government must prioritize spatial planning in the SMR to mitigate environmental change risk. In addition, the government must develop novel strategies to deal with a wide range of fast and unpredictable potential changes in the urban area and its surroundings.

Indonesia has several expanding metropolitan regions, such as the Joglosemar Urban Region. The Joglosemar Urban Region includes three major urban growth centres - the Semarang Metropolitan Region (SMR), the Surakarta Urban Region (SUR), and the Yogyakarta Urban Region (YUR) with three urban growth corridors connecting them. Urban growth corridors cover areas crossed by the main road network linking urban growth centres. Rapid and uncontrolled urban development can endanger environmental sustainability along the corridors. This study compares the three urban growth corridors within the Joglosemar Urban Region - the SMR-SUR, the SUR-YUR, and the SMR-YUR. It examines the spatiotemporal variations of urban compactness and urban vegetation degradation. This study uses Landsat Satellite Imagery from 2001, 2008, 2015, and 2022. The index-based calculation was employed to obtain the built-up area change, urban compactness, and vegetation degradation. The most dispersed urban areas observed had the greatest vegetation degradation. Among the three urban growth corridors, the SMR-SUR corridor recorded the highest vegetation degradation of -0.21, with an increase in compactness index of 0.02. Vegetation greenness is significantly reduced along urban expansion corridors with high spatial dispersion. Our assessment offers new insight to inform the government in enacting policy changes to control urban growth and its sustainability.

Given the shortcomings of traditional heritage preservation practices in understanding the values that justify heritage protection, it is necessary to critically re-evaluate these practices adopted to physically protect the cultural asset, which rarely include the local values ascribed by the surrounding communities. This reflection motivated the development of this study that aims to examine the social valuation ascribed to protected railway assets on the route Jundiai-Campinas (Brazil), in order to compare the different identified values and reflect on the integrated actions of railway heritage preservation and management. To this end, a values-based approach (VBA) was used, a methodology employed for and centred on heritage preservation, which focuses on understanding the local community as one of the protagonists in the heritage valuation process. Applying the different techniques of the VBA method revealed that other values, besides the traditional ones dominant in the specialised dissemination of the subject, also have an impact on the heritage asset. By integrating these community values to the protection and management practices of the cultural asset, it is indeed possible to significantly protect and safeguard not only the monumental object but also its values.

The air velocity’s comparation of different low ventilation heights in model buildings

Passive cooling systems in buildings are inseparable from thermal comfort, particularly in regions with tropical climates. Natural Ventilation (NV) as one of the passive cooling systems can be the solution to issues of thermal comfort and energy conservation as it is proven to achieve thermal comfort in a building. Low ventilation is one of the Natural Ventilation systems that is proven to increase indoor air velocity and thermal comfort in a building. This study examines how the height of low ventilation affects indoor air velocity and thermal comfort in a building model with dimensions 2.5 m x 2.5 m. The research employed 180 data of indoor and outdoor air velocity (m/s) with an interval of 1 minute for each height of vents. The heights of the low ventilation in the research are 10 cm, 40 cm, and 70 cm from the floor surface of the model building. From 540 data, it is concluded that with relatively the same wind speed, the low ventilation with a height of 10 cm has the highest air velocity. The lowest air velocity is obtained from the low ventilation with the highest height, which is 70 cm. The research significance is to give a new consideration of the location of the vent holes, particularly low ventilation holes. With their effectiveness in increasing the air velocity, thermal comfort in the building can also be achieved without the use of an active cooling system.

Monitoring progress objectives in the quality of life of communities requires the construction of tools that allow defining courses of action. The construction of community indicators constitutes a useful tool to define objectives aimed at improving the quality of life. The book summarizes ten successful experiences that demonstrate the benefits of community indicators. Beyond the importance that these instruments acquire, there are limitations derived from the construction and application of community indicators and indices. These limitations become challenges that have been addressed and overcome in each of the chapters. The book shows that it is possible to overcome the obstacles that arise in the construction of community indicators aimed at improving the quality of life. Each of the chapters covers a methodological and, at the same time, operational gap in the design, application and proposals of community indicators that cover different areas and spatial scales. In turn, the book provides a referential framework to deepen the knowledge of localities and particular areas, evidencing that it is possible to generate proposals aimed at improving the quality of life of communities from a multidimensional perspective.

Shannon Entropy-based urban spatial fragmentation to ensure sustainable development of the urban coastal city: A case study of Semarang, Indonesia

This study examines the extent to which the Shannon Entropy Index (H) can be used to ensure ur-ban growth sustainability by measuring the spatial dispersion pattern of a built-up area. The Shannon Entropy Index was calculated based on the proximities to the city center (HCC) and the main road (HMR), which divide the study area into 17 zones. Data from Landsat 5-TM Imagery 2011 and Landsat 8-OLI Imagery 2016 and 2021 were used to extract urban built-up areas through image classification using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) Algorithm and measure their growth over time. The results show the normalized Shannon Entropy Index for the proximi-ties to the city center (HCC ') and the main road (HMR '). HCC ' was found to be 0.93 in 2021 and increased by 0.44 during 2011-2021, while HMR ' was recorded to be 0.68 in 2021 and increased by 0.27 during 2011-2021, indicating that urban development in Semarang City has become in-creasingly fragmented. Among the 17 existing zones, the peri-urban areas of southeast part zones in Semarang (III-BP and IV-AP) were found to have the largest relative Shannon Entropy Index (H') of 0.98 and 0.96, respectively, indicating that this area is developing irregularly and spread-ing out compared to the city center, which is unsustainable built-up area growth. We call for an integrated space utilization control strategy between the city center and the peri-urban area. Our study demonstrates the capacity of using the Shannon Entropy Index to detect potential areas of unsustainable development in a coastal city with diverse development dynamics, which can also be applied in other coastal cities to prevent unsustainable development.

This article seeks to explain why some popular neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires have responded more effectively than others to COVID-19. It compares actions that took place between March and October 2020 in the neighbourhoods of Villa 20, Villa 15 and Villa 1-11-14. We analyse public policies carried out by government agencies, especially the Instituto de Vivienda de la Ciudad (IVC) and the Ministerio de Desarrollo Humano y Habitat (MDHyH), and the active collaboration of local organisations. While significant scholarship has focused on COVID-19 effects and coping strategies in Latin American neighbourhoods, there is limited analysis of how pre-existing relationships between local actors and government agencies have shaped neighbourhood responses. This comparative analysis shows that in fact the consolidation and depth of historical working relations between local government and local organisations determined the response capacity of each informal neighbourhood.
