Optimal quantization, a non-parametric technique for pattern recognition, determines a compact and efficient density representation of data by optimizing a global quantizer performance measure, which is a weighted combination of average log likelihood, entropy and correct classification probability. In multi-dimensions, we obtain the quantization grid using genetic algorithms. Smoothing is an important aspect as it affects the generalization ability of the quantizer. We propose a fast k neighborhood smoothing algorithm. Optimal quantization is much more efficient than other non-parametric methods. For not very well separated Gaussian mixture models, it produces much better results than the EM algorithm, which fails to converge to the true parameters of the underlying density. © 2002 IEEE.

Many knowledge-sharing activities take place in educational institutions, both formally and informally. If this activity is organized with good knowledge management, then this will support a faster knowledge sharing process to get quality and innovative ideas. This paper aims to obtain a summary of existing research, issues, and opportunities for further analysis on knowledge-sharing (KS) practices in academic institutions. The phases of the systematic literature review (SLR) method are described based on Kitchenham (2009) guideline. We found 21 articles, seven articles from IEEE, nine articles from science Direct, and five articles from Springer. The collection of research data on knowledge sharing has been carried out in the United States, Australia, China, Cyprus, United Kingdom, Ghana, Hungary, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Jordanian, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia, with the most research locations being Malaysia (14%) and Saudi Arabia (19%). We also attempted to identify the research topic trend of knowledge sharing research in academic institutions. We found two types of research trends of knowledge sharing research in university, including factor analysis and architecture development. Of the two categories of research trends, 76% discussed factor analysis, and 24% discussed architectural development. We also identified six methods in KS research including Partial Least Square Structure Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), questionnaire, data triangulation, focus groups discussion, observation and interview. Moreover, the most used method in related research is questionnaire, because it is a relatively inexpensive, fast and efficient way of collecting large amounts of information. © 2021 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a new information-theoretic approach to competitive learning and self-organizing maps. We use several information-theoretic measures such as conditional information and information losses to extract main features in input patterns. For each competitive unit, conditional information content is used to show how much information on input patterns is contained. In addition, for detecting the importance of each variable, information losses are introduced. The information loss is defined by difference between information with all input units and information without an input unit. We applied the method to an artificial data, the Iris problem and a student survey. In all cases, experimental results showed that main features in input patterns were clearly detected.

Advancing the automatic synthesis of linguistically accurate and natural-looking American Sign Language (ASL) animations from an easy-To-update script would increase information accessibility for many people who are deaf by facilitating more ASL content to websites and media. We are investigating the production of ASL grammatical facial expressions and head movements coordinated with the manual signs that are crucial for the interpretation of signed sentences. It would be useful for researchers to have an automatic scoring algorithm that could be used to rate the similarity of two animation sequences of ASL facial movements (or an animation sequence and a motioncapture recording of a human signer). We present a novel, sign-language specific similarity scoring algorithm, based on Dynamic Time Warping (DTW), for facial expression performances and the results of a user-study in which the predictions of this algorithm were compared to the judgments of ASL signers. We found that our algorithm had significant correlations with participants comprehension scores for the animations and the degree to which they reported noticing specific facial expressions. © SLPAT 2015 - 6th Workshop on Speech and Language Processing for Assistive Technologies, Proceedings.

Animations of American Sign Language (ASL) can make information accessible for many signers with lower levels of English literacy. Automatically synthesizing such animations is challenging because the movements of ASL signs often depend on the context in which they appear, e.g., many ASL verb movements depend on locations in the signing space the signer has associated with the verb s subject and object. This paper presents several techniques for automatically synthesizing novel instances of ASL verbs whose motion-path and hand-orientation must accurately reflect the subject and object locations in 3D space, including enhancements to to prior state-of-The-Art models. Using these models, animation generation software could produce an infinite variety of indicating verb instances. Using a corpus of motion-capture recordings of multiple performances of eight ASL indicating verbs, we modeled the signer s hand locations and orientations during each verb, dependent upon the location in the signing space where the subject and object were positioned. In a user study, ASL signers watched animations that included verbs synthesized from these models, and we found that they had similar quality to those produced by a human animator. © SLPAT 2015 - 6th Workshop on Speech and Language Processing for Assistive Technologies, Proceedings.

This research tries to view accident data collection and analysis as a system that requires a special view towards understanding the whole and making sense out of it for improved decision making in the effort of reducing the problem of road safety. Under the umbrella of an information architecture research for road safety in developing countries, the objective of this machine learning experimental research is to explore and predict the role of road users on possible injury risks. The research employed Classification and Adaptive Regression Trees (CART) and RandomForest approaches. To identify relevant patterns and illustrate the performance of the techniques for the road safety domain, road accident data collected from Addis Ababa Traffic Office is exposed to many sided analyses. Empirical results showed that the models could classify accidents with promising accuracy. © 2011 IEEE.

Currently, in the process of assessing and giving feedback on students' argumentative writing, educators have to spend a considerable amount of time reading and analyzing each essay individually. This can be a complicated and time-consuming process, especially if the number of students to be assessed is quite large. The problem of this research is to find the most effective algorithm in providing accurate and reliable predictions in the context of evaluation and feedback of students' argumentation. This study compares three algorithms (logistic regression, Naive Bayes, and Random Forest) to predict student argumentation using essays from grades 6-12. Logistic regression performed best with 94.34% accuracy, followed by random forest with 91.98% accuracy, and Naive Bayes with 88.93% accuracy. The study optimized preprocessing and selected algorithms for an automated guidance model. It is the first stage of a three-part study for developing automated guidance models. Data came from Kaggle, and the study aims to improve the accuracy of automated guidance models for student argumentation.

The tuberculosis prevention and control model needs to be explored. This study aimed to create a conceptual framework for measuring TB vulnerability to guide the prevention program's effectiveness. SLR method was employed, resulting in 1.060 articles being analyzed with ACA Leximancer 5.0 and facet analysis. The built framework consists of five components: risk of TB transmission, damage caused by TB, health care facility, the burden of TB, and awareness of TB. Future research is required to explore variables in each component to formulate the degree of TB vulnerability. © 2023 The authors and IOS Press.

Industrial and distribution service problems that belong to combinatorial optimization include vehicle routing with Vehicle Routing Problem. This research builds a framework and implements it in a multi-class optimization model to reduce overfitting and misclassification results caused by unbalanced multiclassification in the influence of the number of 'nodes' on vehicle routes with machine learning. The problem of imbalance in vehicle route classification has been a challenge in the classification process and attracted the attention of a number of researchers. The purpose of the model in general is to gain an understanding of the mechanism in the problem so as to classify the imbalanced vehicle route data based on JNE delivery routes. The solution method that will be used by applying k-nearest neighbor to determine the amount of carrying capacity of the goods will then determine the delivery location point with the vehicle routing problem. So that this model can be a model in determining vehicle routes based on the capacity limit of the number of shipments of goods. © 2023 IEEE.

This study is dedicated to a critical investigation of the existing approaches toward a data visualization management platform based on Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR). Despite the growing popularity of FHIR, the available evidence provides a compelling reason to believe that its use is still accompanied by a significant number of technical challenges. Therefore, the development of tools to ensure its convenient visualization remains a pressing need for a variety of stakeholders operating in the healthcare industry. Results of the systematic literature review that included 26 studies provide valuable information about the most popular instruments in this area, such as the OpenEHR CKM approach. The review offers a critical discussion of the most important advantages and disadvantages of different approaches. It provides valuable recommendations for further research as well as practical recommendations concerning the best ways to utilize data visualization platforms based on FHIR. It defines the tradeoff of functionality versus the ease of dissemination as one of the most important problems facing most platforms and suggests avenues for developing additional tooling support for visualizing FHIR. The results of the research could be useful both for scientists and practitioners. © 2022 IEEE.
