Heart rate variability (HRV) is known to be one of the representative ECG-derived features that are useful for diverse pervasive healthcare applications. The advancement in daily physiological monitoring technology is enabling monitoring of HRV in people's everyday lives. In this study, we evaluate the feasibility of measuring ECG-derived features such as HRV, only using the smartphone-integrated ECG sensors system named Sinabro. We conducted the evaluation with 13 subjects in five predetermined smartphone use cases. The result shows the potential that the smartphone-based sensing system can support daily monitoring of ECG-derived features;The average errors of HRV over all participants ranged from 1.65% to 5.83% (SD: 2.54～10.87) for five use cases. Also, all of individual HRV parameters showed less than 5% of average errors for the three reliable cases.

The purpose of this work is to contribute to the design and development of a virtual university hospital as a place for educational activities. The findings presented in this paper are based on two exploratory studies using a virtual operating room with both medical and non-medical participants. The room was designed to recreate a real one at St. Olav's university hospital in Trondheim, Norway. The first participant category was represented by surgical and anesthesia postgraduate nursing students who conducted role-play of realistic and relevant scenarios in the virtual operating room. The non-medical participants went on a virtual guided tour around in the same operating room. Both participant groups provided suggestions for further development of the virtual hospital. We have also investigated the use of the Oculus Rift, a head mounted display, as a way of enhancing the immersion at the virtual operating room. The paper highlights and discusses the most important findings, with suggestions of future work.

Young children need their parents' love and care but their parents are not always available to tell them stories. This motivates our proposal of a Smart Teddy Bear, a vision-based story teller, to assist young children in their social-emotional growth. When a young child wants to listen to a story, he or she simply opens any page in that book before a Smart Teddy Bear and the system automatically recognizes which book is of interest and plays the corresponding audio story. Our proposed system is based on the Bag-of-Words model. We propose to eliminate too small visual features and to downscale an image up to 1/16 of its original size to remove up to 70% of unnecessary visual features. Furthermore we ensemble results of multiple lightweight SVM classifiers to boost the overall accuracy. Experimental results show that our system achieves the accuracy of 99.33% with 40 books containing 1369 different pages. We propose the Smart Teddy Bears help children enjoy audio books in a new exciting way through attractive interactions with their lovely toys. © 2013 IEEE.

It is an urgent need to find an objective way to estimate the degree of fatigue of employees. In this study, we designed a monitoring and estimation system for the degree of fatigue. This paper explains a long-term pedaling experiment that we use it to explore the possibility to use only the time sequence data of head movement during pedaling to estimate the fatigue. While we show the possibility for this through experimental data, it is clear that we need to collect more data to establish an estimation method.

In this paper we describe an architecture for the digital museum and propose the suitable museum data model for distributed digital contents, especially in 3D cultural objects. The development of a data model is viewing interoperability, standards, museum data model and feedback from two museums in Chiang Mai pilot sites under the Museum Thailand project. We analyzed the notable metadata enabling and supporting all of museum content management processes. In addition we also described a system that will integrate data from different museums. Finally, the museums can use this model to implement their system for providing services to cultural content experts and public entities. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) have myriad functions in transcription, translation, and post-transcriptional gene regulation, with central roles in normal development as well as in both genetic and infectious diseases. When a protein binds RNA, a conformational change often occurs. For RNA-protein complexes that have been characterized, conformational changes have been observed in the protein, the RNA, or both. These conformational changes have not been sufficiently characterized, however, in part due to the small number of structures of bound and unbound complexes of RNA-binding proteins available until recently. Here we systematically analyze a new dataset of 90 pairs of bound and unbound proteins to evaluate the conformational changes that occur upon RNA binding. Most of the conformational changes were observed in noninterfacial regions of the RNA-binding proteins. Detailed analyses of the modes of RNA binding and any associated conformational changes in proteins are critical for fully understanding the mechanisms of RNA-protein recognition, for developing better RNA-protein docking methods and methods for predicting interfacial residues, and for RNA-based drug design. In order to tackle the data transmission bottlenecks of the gateway node in clustering Ad hoc Networks, the paper proposes a communication method. Firstly, DMAC (Distributed and Mobility-Adaptive Clustering) algorithm and Omni-directional antenna is well introduced and discussed. Then the ICMMDA (The Inter-cluster Communication Method based on Directional Antennas) policy building virtual channels between two hops away cluster-head and using directional antenna is brought about. Lastly, the simulation shows that the method can reduce the end-to-end delay between two clusters and improve the network throughput. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Optical Music Recognition (OMR) software currently in the market are not normally designed for music learning and ad hoc interpretation;they usually require scanned input of music scores to perform well. In our work, we aimed to remove this inconvenience by using photos captured by mobile phone's camera as the input. With the cloud-based architecture and the design without the assumption of perfect image orientation and lighting condition, we were able to eliminate many of the software's architectural and algorithmic problems while still maintaining an overall decent performance. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The received signal strength (RSS) clustering has played a significant role in site surveying and data pre-processing for the location tracking in Wi-Fi environment. To this end, this paper presents a novel clustering algorithm to cluster the raw RSS vectors with large similarities in both the RSS and physical locations together. The clusters of RSS vectors are determined by the cells which are generated by the Dirichlet tessellation in a transformed low-dimensional space. Our algorithm consists of two steps. We first use the Laplacian embedding to transform the raw measurements into a low-dimensional space, while preserving the RSS and location neighborhood relations. Second, after the seeds of cells are carefully selected, we will tessellate the low-dimensional space by the Dirichlet cells to obtain the clustering results. The experiments conducted in an actual public Wi-Fi environment prove that our algorithm can achieve the smallest cluster scattering in both the RSS and locations compared with the existing affinity propagation clustering, K-means clustering and binary support vector classifier (SVC) algorithms. © 2014 ISSN 1881-803X.
