The worldwide Digital Signage market has been getting increasingly popular in recent years. Nevertheless, for service providers, the Digital Signage business is still not easy to manage and time-consuming to operate. In this paper, based on the GPS and wireless infrastructure, we present a mobile location-aware digital signage system (LDSS). Through the centralized system architecture, the applications for the Digital Signage can be expanded to various advertising vehicles including buses and other mobile advertising vehicles. Also, we present an advertisement recommendation algorithm, by which the advertisement can be broadcasted in the right markets more effectively. Evidenced by simulated experiments and analysis, compared with traditional region trigger advertising, sequential advertising and random advertising, our advertisement recommendation algorithm can effectively reach to the key target audiences in planned regions, while show excellent ability to differentiate markets in unplanned regions reaching to the target consumer groups as well.

The main knowledge management challenges are to capture, store and reuse contextual knowledge generated during interactions that occur daily in an organization. In this paper, we propose an activity context-aware architecture to support knowledge management in working processes. The required features for this architecture are processing, reasoning and sharing contextual knowledge involving information about activities performed. We also present results from evaluation of our proposal — A-CoBrA — for a specific domain.

There exists a need for additional transmission capacity to connect distributed resources such as wind energy from remote locations to the power grid. The high cost of running transmission lines necessitates having a way to minimize the length of transmission required to connect the distributed resources to load centers. In addition, the substations that connect to the transmission lines need to be fault tolerant by ensuring that the loss of any one transmission line does not result in the loss of power to any substation. In this paper, the relative cost of connecting a range of sources to a range of loads with and without fault tolerance is presented. Fault tolerance is achieved through a 2-path redundant graph approach. Studies show that the additional cost of ensuring fault tolerance for selected schemes ranges between 8% and 33%. This percentage value can support decision making in practice.

The paper developed a block-wise approach for ICA algorithms which can improve the computational efficiency of ICA without the degradation of performance for the separation of biomedical signals. Source signals including electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyogram (EMG) and 60-Hz sinusoid are linearly mixed for experimental tests. The mean-square errors (MSE) between the original sources and the separated signals are calculated for the evaluation of separation performance. These results demonstrated that the proposed block-wise approach can achieve the desired separation performance of signals in a more efficient way.

In Internet, IP multicast has been used successfully to provide an efficient, best-effort delivery service for group communication applications. However, applications such as multiparty private conference, distribution of stock market information, pay per view and other subscriber services require secure multicast to protect integrity and confidentiality of the group traffic, and validate group member's authenticity. Providing secure multicast for group communication is problematic without a robust group key management. In this paper, we propose an anonymous group key management with ID-based Signature and secret sharing technologies to distribute a new group key securely to each participant of a group with only one rekey message whenever the group membership changes. The key management guarantees that a legal user, without revealing his/her real identity, can join a group after finishing the mutual authentication with the group initiator, and enforces the forward secrecy and backward secrecy.

Background: It has been apparent in the last few years that small non coding RNAs (ncRNA) play a very significant role in biological regulation. Among these microRNAs (miRNAs), 22-23 nucleotide small regulatory RNAs, have been a major object of study as these have been found to be involved in some basic biological processes. So far about 706 miRNAs have been identified in humans alone. However, it is expected that there may be many more miRNAs encoded in the human genome. In this report, a "context-sensitive" Hidden Markov Model (CSHMM) to represent miRNA structures has been proposed and tested extensively. We also demonstrate how this model can be used in conjunction with filters as an ab initio method for miRNA identification. Results: The probabilities of the CSHMM model were estimated using known human miRNA sequences. A classifier for miRNAs based on the likelihood score of this "trained" CSHMM was evaluated by: (a) cross-validation estimates using known human sequences, (b) predictions on a dataset of known miRNAs, and (c) prediction on a dataset of non coding RNAs. The CSHMM is compared with two recently developed methods, miPred and CID-miRNA. The results suggest that the CSHMM performs better than these methods. In addition, the CSHMM was used in a pipeline that includes filters that check for the presence of EST matches and the presence of Drosha cutting sites. This pipeline was used to scan and identify potential miRNAs from the human chromosome 19. It was also used to identify novel miRNAs from small RNA sequences of human normal leukocytes obtained by the Deep sequencing (Solexa) methodology. A total of 49 and 308 novel miRNAs were predicted from chromosome 19 and from the small RNA sequences respectively Conclusion: The results suggest that the CSHMM is likely to be a useful tool for miRNA discovery either for analysis of individual sequences or for genome scan. In this position paper, we analyze ways that a human can best be involved in interactive artificial learning against a backdrop of traditional AI programming and conventional artificial learning. Our primary claim is that interactive artificial learning can produce a higher return on human investment than conventional methods, meaning that performance of the agent exceeds performance of traditional agents at a lower cost to the human. This claim is clarified by identifying metrics that govern the effectiveness of interactive artificial learning. We then present a roadmap for achieving this claim, identifying ways in which interactive artificial learning can be used to improve each stage of training an artificial agent: configuring, planning, acting, observing, and updating. We conclude by presenting a case study that contrasts programming using conventional artificial learning to programming using interactive artificial learning. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the run-up of internal solitary waves (ISWs) on steep uniform slopes in a two-layered fluid system with a free surface. A 12 m long wave flume, which incorporated a movable vertical gate for generating ISWs, was used in the experiments. A steep uniform slope was modeled at one end of the flume. In the present study we looked at internal waves with small and large amplitudes using a steep uniform slope (from one of Θ=30, 50, 60, 90, 120, and 130 deg) much longer than those previously published in the literature. Results collected from a wide range of experimental runs show that the run-up height depends on the planar slope, while the breaking depth is only antecedent to the amplitude of an ISW. The overall quantitative agreement with the linear feature aspects of the incident wave amplitude is encouraging. Copyright © 2009 by ASME.

Many organizations collect large amounts of data to support their business and decision making processes. The data collected from various sources may have data quality problems in it. These kinds of issues become prominent when various databases are integrated. The integrated databases inherit the data quality problems that were present in the source database. The data in the integrated systems need to be cleaned for proper decision making. Cleansing of data is one of the most crucial steps. In this research, focus is on one of the major issue of data cleansing i.e. ¿duplicate record detection¿ which arises when the data is collected from various sources. As a result of this research study, comparison among standard duplicate elimination algorithm (SDE), sorted neighborhood algorithm (SNA), duplicate elimination sorted neighborhood algorithm (DE-SNA), and adaptive duplicate detection algorithm (ADD) is provided. A prototype is also developed which shows that adaptive duplicate detection algorithm is the optimal solution for the problem of duplicate record detection. For approximate matching of data records, string matching algorithms (recursive algorithm with word base and recursive algorithm with character base) have been implemented and it is concluded that the results are much better with recursive algorithm with word base.
