Studies indicate that making learners feel good is important only minor to clear knowledge transformation. Many studies have tried to use virtual humans as a part of interface in learning systems to increase the effect of instructions. Based on social interaction and pedagogical theories, many e-learning systems use animated films or virtual reality to boost human-computer engagement and ease their negative emotions. However, affective learning systems still need much research to improve their functionalities and usability. This study proposed a convenient approach to develop an emotionally interactive learning system;learners can express their emotions by mouse-clicking while learning. A virtual human was created to empathically react to learners in proactive and reactive ways to encourage and persuade them into persistent learning and help achieve their goals. Experimental results show that, averagely, subjects can tell virtual human's emotions and agree to its empathic reactions. Persuasion conducted by virtual human could not increase subjects' learning time, but could significantly increase their completion rate of exercises. Copyright 2009 ACM.

The current robot-assisted surgery has built in significant safety features, force feedback system, pre-operative planning software, but due to a lack of communication between the robot and the surrounding medical devices, undesirable and potentially unsafe actions could still occur, endangering the patient condition. To achieve major improvement of safety during an operation, an interoperability feature is implemented in a robot-assisted orthopedic surgery system coupled with smart interactions between medical devices. The proposed design consists of integrating an interoperable central decision-making unit (CDMU), wirelessly activating safety interlocks on the surgical robot and preventing surgical complications. Two different patient states, namely, normal and critical risk states, were simulated, and the reactions of the designed system were analyzed. In the interoperability-based design, the system is able to achieve appropriate reactions to various situations at risk in a timely manner, increasing the confidence of the clinical staff operating then in a safer robot-assisted surgery environment. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

Design of interoperability-coupled safe infusion therapy in a telemetry setting

Reliable wireless transmission of medical data is achievable in a modern telemetry setting and is put to good use. However, intercommunications among the different medical devices and initiation of controls to avoid unsafe incidents are generally not available. Interoperability among medical devices connected to a patient at a remote site is a challenging feature for practical realization that would increase safety. A new system is proposed to improve infusion therapy safety by implementing an interoperability feature coupled with a smart clinical decision support system. This system is designed to respond promptly to medication error alerts by the use of safety commands and interlocks. The design incorporates an innovative Intelligent Interoperability Supervisor (IIS) in the system which includes an infusion pump (or pumps) delivering drug therapy to a patient connected to relevant monitoring devices. A local decision support unit in IIS in the remote location analyzes the data transmitted by interface modules on the connected medical devices and verifies with preset patient-specific alarm criteria to detect presence of any crisis or to predict potential adverse episode. If the situation is assessed to be critical, IIS sends appropriate alert signals to a remote clinical care giver and control commands to the infusion pump to activate appropriate safety interlocks. Different critical situations of clinical cases are simulated in a conventional infusion therapy system (Configuration A), and in an IIS-implemented system (Configuration B). In Configuration A, there would be a significant delay between alarm occurrence and clinician intervention;such a time delay could lead to potential deterioration of patient condition. In Configuration B, clinically abnormal values are detected and the patient state is analyzed. The problem considered is that of finding frequent subpaths of a database of paths in a fixed undirected graph. This problem arises in applications such as predicting congestion in network traffic. An algorithm based on Apriori, called AFS, is developed, but with significantly improved efficiency through exploiting the underlying graph structure, which makes AFS feasible for practical input path sizes. It is also proved that a natural generalization of the frequent subpaths problem is not amenable to any solution quicker than Apriori.

An Acoustically-Analytic Approach to Behavioral Patterns for Monitoring Living Activities

Risk prevention and alarm are crucial for home care of aged people who live alone. In this paper, an acousticallyanalytic approach is proposed to extract behavioral patterns for modeling and monitoring living activities. An experimental environment was established for collecting sound tracking data of behaviors from daily activities. Each sound tracking data was transcribed to the corresponding sound event sequences by caregivers and psychologists. A living activities mining algorithm is applied to extract meaningful sequences of sound event as behavioral patterns. Then K-means algorithm is adopted to classify events into several fuzzy clusters relating to living activities for modeling behaviors in daily activities. An experimental database consists of 150 sound tracking data was established by collecting three guided behaviors included rolled out of bed to drink water, go to the toilet and watch the fish jar from 5 subjects in two weeks. 476 meaningful sequences of sound events were explored and clustered into 32 quasi-activities. These quasi-activities were further concluded into 5 kinds of behavioral patterns for modeling living activities. The preliminary result shows the potential for modeling and proactively detecting abnormal behaviors or changes of the aged.

OBJECTIVES:To determine the prevalence of complications in a series of consecutive cases of hip arthroscopy; to assess the progression of the sample through a learning curve; and to recognize the causes of complications in arthroscopic hip operations. METHOD:150 consecutive cases that underwent hip arthroscopy between May 2004 and December 2008 were evaluated. The complications encountered were classified in three ways: organic system affected, severity and groups of 50 consecutive cases. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and Fisher's exact test. RESULTS:We observed 15 complications in this study (10%): ten were neurological, two were osteoarticular, one was vascular-ischemic and two were cutaneous. In the classification of severity, three were classified as major, 12 as intermediate and none as minor. The incidence of complications over the course of the learning curve did not present any statistically significant difference (p = 0.16). CONCLUSIONS:Hip arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that involves low morbidity, but which presents complications in some cases. These complications are frequently neurological and transitory, and mainly occur because of joint traction. The complication rate did not decrease with progression of our sample.

Auditory perception is one of the most important functions for robotics applications. Microphone arrays are widely used for auditory perception in which the spatial structure of microphones is usually known. In practice, microphone array calibration can be tedious and other devices or means are required. The structure from sound (SFS) approach addresses the problem of simultaneously localizing a set of microphones and a set of acoustic events that provides a great flexibility to calibrate different setups of microphone arrays. However, the existing method does not take measurement uncertainty into account and does not provide uncertainty estimates of the SFS results. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic structure from sound (PSFS) approach using the unscented transform in which the uncertainties of the PSFS results are also available. In addition, a probabilistic sound source localization approach using the PSFS results is provided to improve sound source localization accuracy. The ample results of simulation and experiments using low-cost, off-the-shelf microphones demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the proposed PSFS approach. © 2009 VSP.

There is a growing body of experimental evidence suggesting that the Ca2+ signaling in ventricular myocytes is characterized by a high gradient near the cell membrane and a more uniform Ca2+ distribution in the cell interior [1]--[7]. An important reason for this phenomenon might be that in these cells the t-tubular system forms a network of extracellular space, extending deep into the cell interior. This allows the electrical signal, that propagates rapidly along the cell membrane, to reach the vicinity of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), where intracellular Ca2+ required for myofilament activation is stored [1], [8]--[11]. Early studies of cardiac muscle showed that the t-tubules are found at intervals of about 2 lm along the longitudinal cell axis in close proximity to the Z-disks of the sarcomeres [12]. Subsequent studies have demonstrated that the t-tubular system has also longitudinal extensions [9]--[11], [13].
