Phytochemistry and antimicrobial potential of off-grade white pepper (Piper nigrum L.) essential oils extracted using microwave-assisted hydro-distillation (MAHD)

White pepper generally used as spice, has the main component of piperine which gives it a spicy taste and essential oils that determine its aroma. In general trade, only good pepper is traded, while off-grade that does not meet quality requirements will be wasted. This study aims to investigate the effect of extraction methods of essential oils from off-grade white pepper and the potential of its antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria. The results showed that off-grade white pepper essential oils (WPEO) could be isolated by using microwave-assisted hydro-distillation (MAHD) and hydro-distillation (HD). Essential oils produced had physicochemical characteristics in accordance with the ISO 3061:2008 standard. Specifically, MAHD off-grade, MAHD grade-A, and HD WPEO had 13, 11, and 15 components, respectively. The chemical composition showed that all the extracted EO contained the main components of caryophyllene, (+)-3-carene, D-limonene, and β-pinene. The methods showed the extraction ability of monoterpene hydrocarbons by MAHD and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons by HD. In comparison, microwave-extracted essential oils had a higher limonene, while off-grade WPEO contained (+)-3-carene. The FTIR results confirmed the content of the components in the three WPEO that were investigated. All essential oils had antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. typhimurium with zone inhibition values of MAHD off-grade WPEO, MAHD grade-A WPEO, and HD off-grade WPEO against E. coli at 15.44 ± 1.68 mm, 6.72 ± 0.59 mm, and 10.17 ± 0.29 mm, as well as against S. typhimurium at 8.72 ± 1.25 mm, 8.06 ± 0.86 mm, and 8.83 ± 0.87 mm, respectively. © 2025 The Authors

The main objective of this investigation was to study the time effect during solid state bioconversion (SSB) on total phenolics content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (AoxA) of common beans to improve antihypertensive functionality. Cooked cotyledons of dehulled common beans were inoculated with a suspension of R. oligosporus NRRL 2710 (1 × 106 spores/mL), and incubated at 35℃ for times of 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96 and 108 h (after 108 h the cotyledons showed off odor). Flours from bioprocessed dehulled common bean from each incubation time were blended with their corresponding milled seed coats. The best time for producing bioprocessed common bean (added with seed coats) functional flour with the highest AoxA (ORAC value = 17,468 μmol Trolox equivalents (TE)/100 gsample, dw;ABTS value = 13,505 μmol TE/100 gsample, dw) was 108 h. The SSB process substantially increased TPC and total hydrophilic AoxA and antihypertensive potential of common beans in 2.24, 2.45 - 2.73 and 6769 times, respectively. Proteins hydrolyzates from unprocessed whole and bioprocessed (108 h) common beans had IC50 [concentration needed to inhibit 50% the activity of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)] of 79.2 and 0.0117 μg/mL, respectively. The SSB is an efective strategy to improve the TPC of common beans for enhanced functionality with improved antioxidant activity and antihypertensive potential.

Lime peel essential oil (LPO) exhibits promising antibacterial properties, yet its inherent instability limits its practical applications, necessitating effective encapsulation strategies. Microencapsulation provides protection and facilitates the controlled release of active compounds. This study developed LPO microcapsules via complex coacervation, employing gum arabic and gelatin as encapsulating agents for wound dressing applications. Process optimization identified optimal conditions at pH 4.25, 15 min stirring time, and 50 °C temperature. The microcapsules yielded 45.13 %, oil content 77.03 %, encapsulation efficiency 92.14 %, and a 44.94 % core release within 2 h, following the Avrami kinetic model ( n = 0.345). Morphological analysis revealed spherical microcapsules with an average diameter of 1.182 μm, effectively protecting LPO from thermal degradation. These microcapsules were subsequently immobilized onto bacterial cellulose produced from pineapple core fermentation using Komagataeibacter xylinus . The resulting material demonstrated potential as an antibacterial wound dressing, with inhibition zones of 11.51 mm against Staphylococcus aureus and 13.70 mm against Escherichia coli . This research presents an innovative approach to wound dressing development, integrating protective and antibacterial functions to prevent skin infection effectively.

Physicochemical and Antibacterial Properties of Chitosan Extracted from Waste Shrimp Shells

This research aims to study the production of chitosan from shrimp shell (Litopenaeus vannamei) of waste origin using two chemical methodologies involving demineralization, deproteinization, and the degree of deacetylation. The evaluation of the quality of chitosan from waste shrimp shells includes parameters for the yield, physical chemistry characteristics by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), the degree of deacetylation, and antibacterial activity. The results showed (by Method 1) extraction yields for chitin of 33% and for chitosan of 49% and a 76% degree of deacetylation. Chitosan obtained by Method 2 was more efficient: chitin (36%) and chitosan (63%), with a high degree of deacetylation (81.7%). The antibacterial activity was tested against Gram-negative bacteria (Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Enterobacter cloacae) and Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis and the Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) and the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were determined. Method 2 showed that extracted chitosan has good antimicrobial potential against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and that the process is viable. © 2016 José Carlos Vilar Junior et al.

The most effective methodologies for generating Musa spp. explants involve the utilization of plant tissue culture micropropagation techniques. However, the pervasive challenge of microbial contamination significantly impedes the successful micropropagation of Musa spp. This study examined the antioxidant and antibacterial characteristics of the essential oil (LPO) and extract (LPE) obtained from the peel of Citrus aurantifolia. Additionally, we explored their mechanisms against common microbial contaminants in Musa spp. micropropagation. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, we identified 28 components in LPO, with δ-limonene, β-pinene, citral, trans-citral, β-bisabolene, geranyl acetate, and α-pinene as the primary constituents. Meanwhile, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry detected 17 components in LPE, highlighting nobiletin, tangeretin, scoparone, sinensetin, tetramethylscutellarein, 5-demethylnobiletin, and pyropheophorbide A as the predominant compounds. Evaluation using the DPPH and ABTS methods revealed the IC₅₀ values for LPE at 0.66 ± 0.009 and 0.92 ± 0.012 mg/mL, respectively, indicating higher antioxidant activity compared to LPO, with IC₅₀ values of 3.03 ± 0.019 and 4.27 ± 0.023 mg/mL using the same methods. Both LPO and LPE exhibited antimicrobial activities against all tested contaminant microorganisms through in vitro assays. Mechanistic investigations employing time-kill analysis, assessment of cell membrane integrity, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed changes in the morphological characteristics of the tested microbial contaminants, intensifying with increased concentration and exposure duration of LPO and LPE. These alterations led to substantial damage, including cell wall lysis, leakage of intracellular components, and subsequent cell death. Consequently, LPO and LPE emerge as promising alternatives for addressing microbial contamination in banana tissue cultures. © 2024 The Author(s)

The groupers, locally known as 'kerapu' in Indonesia, are commercially valuable fish in Indonesia, including Aceh. The groupers are the first fish family to be plundered in most countries' fisheries industries. However, the biodiversity information of the groupers fished in Aceh is limited. This study was aimed to inventories the grouper species landed in Aceh fish landing sites. The data collection was performed in some fish landing locations (TPI) located in Aceh. In general, this study revealed that Aceh has high grouper diversity. In total, 35 species of the Epinephelidae family were recorded. Epinephelus was the dominant genus found, followed by Cephalopholis, Plectropomus, Variola, Aethaloperca, Anyperodon, and Hyporthodus. Simeulue, Weh island, and Banda Aceh were the locations with the highest diversity of grouper in Aceh. Overall, the data collected from this study would be beneficial for the future management plan of grouper in Aceh and Indonesia.

Background: Marginal Zone Lymphomas (MZL) include Splenic (SMZL), Nodal (NMZL), and Extranodal (ENMZL) pathologic subtypes and are typically associated with an indolent clinical course. Even if outcomes of most MZL cases are excellent, a significant proportion of patients relapse after first line therapy showing heterogenous behavior, with few studies describing outcomes after first relapse. In this report we investigated clinical characteristics and survival of MZL patients prospectively enrolled in the NF10 observational study who experienced a first relapse after induction systemic therapy. Methods: The NF10 Project was started in 2010 by Fondazione Italiana Linfomi (FIL) as a prospective registry specifically conceived to investigate the prognosis of Indolent Non-Follicular B-Cell Lymphomas (INFL). All pts with a histologic confirmed diagnosis of INFL were eligible for NF10 study with no exclusion criteria. In addition to conventional MZL subtypes the category of disseminated MZL (dissMZL) was defined for cases with undefined presentation. For the current study we selected only patients who experienced a first relapse after systemic therapy. Pts were followed and treated based on local institution guidelines. Primary endpoint was Progression free survival from first relapse (PFS2) which was defined as the time from the date of first relapse (Index date) from subsequent progression, re-treatment, or death due to any cause: secondary endpoint was Survival after relapse (SAR) which was calculated from the index date to death. Results: Between July 2010 and July 2018, 740 MZL cases had been registered by 65 centres in Europe and South America. Systemic therapy was administered to 435 patients (pts) at time of diagnosis and to 66 cases after initial watch& wait. Overall, 122 patients were identified who had a first relapse after systemic therapy and represented the study population.
