Optimizing crude oil operations scheduling considering blending in tanks

This paper focuses on the optimization of crude oil operations scheduling in a refinery that is supplied with crude oil by ship. One of the main challenges associated with the crude oil operations scheduling problem is the management of crude storage in tanks. Since storage capacity is limited and there are several types of crude oil depending on their composition, it is necessary to store mixtures of crude oil in tanks. This feature makes necessary the inclusion of nonlinear, non-convex constraints, which complicates the resolution of mathematical programming models. To address this problem, we have developed a mathematical programming model based on a continuous-time formulation using time slots, along with a strategy based on piecewise McCormick relaxation that allows us to efficiently handle the nonlinear constraints generated by blending crude oils in tanks.

Optimizing the monthly scheduling of crudes in a terminal-refinery system

This paper focuses on solving the optimization of crude oil operations scheduling carried out in a real system composed of a refinery and a marine terminal, over a monthly horizon. In the present article, we introduce a large-scale mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model that faithfully represents the operation and characteristics of the system. Considering the model's complexity and its non-linear and non-convex nature, the challenge lies in solving the model in a time frame that meets the user's needs. To tackle this problem, we develop a temporal decomposition method in conjunction with a linear approximation.

This paper addresses the problem of closed-loop operation of scheduling, together with the interaction of control and scheduling, for a class of processes that appear very often in industry: those that combine continuous production lines with parallel batch units that share some resources. The paper presents a novel approach to this problem, including batching and a new type of precedence in the assignment problem. It also considers the effect of shared resources on the duration of the cycle time of the batch units. The approach is illustrated with a real-life example of a canned tuna factory

The key idea of the fourth industrial revolution is to use the huge amount of data from the increased process digitalisation in order to make better decisions at all levels: from the design and control, to operation and management. However, advanced decision support systems usually rely on good plant models. Despite the increased popularity of machine learning, in the process industry many of these approaches may fail in building reliable prediction models: that is, models whose output can be trusted even out of the region where actual data was collected. This paper illustrates how to get a reliable grey-box model of a chemical plant for optimisation purposes via sum-of-squares (SOS) constrained regression, a method that guarantees full enforcement of physical features on the identified model, no matter the quality and quantity of the collected data. The approach is used here to identify a reliable model for the reaction kinetics in a hybrid CSTR, a pilot plant where the chemical reactions are emulated over a harmless fluid.

Energy-efficient Operation of a Medium Density Fibreboard Dryer Through Nonlinear MPC

Medium density fibreboard (MDF) is a popular and cheap wood-based panel for which an accurate control of the fiber humidity is key to get the desired product quality. The drying dynamics is nonlinear and spatially dependent, with strong interactions between air humidity, temperature, flow, type of wood and chips size. This translates in several complex phenomena, difficult to model accurately by first principles. The end aim in this work is implementing a model predictive control (MPC) for an industrial MDF dryer which reaches the desired fiber humidity by the most energy-efficient control path. To this aim, a suitable grey-box model of the dryer is developed first. Then, based on it, a moving-horizon estimator is used to infer the unmeasured process inputs and model parameters, which provides the required inputs to a tracking MPC with economic considerations. An efficient implementation of the optimization problems has been done using orthogonal collocation for model discretization and modern software for large-scale problems, including automatic differentiation and a sparse interior point solver. Previously to the actual implementation on-site, the proposed controller is tested in simulation with a detailed distributed-parameter model of a generic MDF dryer.

The preterm infant are estimated to be around 15 million cases worldwide every year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) that is more than 1 in 10 babies worldwide 60% of them are born in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. So the babies born prematurely are generally kept in special chamber or sensitive unit care called 'incubators' which are designed to help this preterm babies to keeping their bodies warm for the first several weeks of life. Because the infant incubator provides a stable level of temperature, relative humidity and oxygen concentration. Temperature control system is the most important part of the baby incubator which is around (37°C). This paper focuses on the comparison of two identification methods to get the best model from the experimental data and chooses the one that is nearest to the real process. The two methods are the identification system toolbox from Matlab environment and a software called HIDEN or Hito IDENTification. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper deals with the scheduling of batch processes that share common resources having consumption profiles that change over time and are subjected to some global constraints. In order to approach the problem, the formulation mixes three different time basis. Scheduling is performed in continuous time, but the description of the shared resources and the global constraints uses discrete values. The method is applied to a challenging problem in a tuna canning factory that mixes continuous flows of cans with the batch operation of a set of sterilizers sharing the steam supply line.

A Sum-Of-Squares Constrained Regression Approach for Process Modeling

Combining empirical relationships with a backbone of first-principle laws allow the modeler to transfer the available process knowledge into a model. In order to get such so-called grey-box models, data-reconciliation methods and constrained regression algorithms are key to obtain reliable process models that will be used later for optimization. However, the existent approaches require solving a semi-infinite constrained regression nonlinear problem, which is usually done numerically by an iterative procedure alternating between a relaxed problem and an a posteriori check for constraint violation. This paper proposes an alternative one-stage efficient approach for polynomial regression models based in sum-of-squares (convex) programming. Moreover, it is shown how several desirable features on the regression model can be naturally enforced in this optimization framework. The effectiveness of the proposed ap-proach is illustrated through an academic example provided in the related literature.

Considering uncertainty in continuous production processes is key to compute short-time optimal schedules which can be trusted in practice. This paper proposes a two-step stochastic approach to the robust scheduling of several evaporation plants. This approach considers the possibility of reacting in the future once the uncertainty materializes. Each evaporator has different features (capacity, equipment, etc.) and the individual performance is affected by external factors and fouling effects. Moreover, a multi-objective analysis has been carried out to provide a decision support for the operator who must take the concrete decisions about load allocation and cleaning tasks along a time horizon. The problem has been solved by discretizing the time horizon and adapting the general-precedence method to deal with an unknown number of tasks. The nonlinear behavior of each plant is approximated by surrogate linear models obtained experimentally, providing thus solutions in acceptable time. © 2017 IEEE.
