Architectures for the design of soft real-time systems typically do not facilitate the use of performance tools that will enable a designer to analyse the performance of the system that is being designed. Intercommunication data areas, whose behaviours are characterised by interaction protocols, are the building blocks of many soft real-time systems. The interaction protocols are grouped into families depending on their reading/writing functionality. We present two members belonging to the pool family. These components transfer data among tasks without synchronisation in a non-selective manner. In the basic pool model no task has priority over other tasks whereas in the priority pool model writer tasks have non-preemptive priority over reader tasks. Both queueing models are analysed approximately using a decomposition technique. Basic pool modelling is based on single-server and multi-server semaphore queues. Priority pool modelling is inspired on non-preemptive priority classical analysis.

Active flow control for external aerodynamics: from micro air vehicles to a full aircraft in stall

We investigate the aerodynamic performance of active flow control of airfoils and wings using synthetic jets with zero net-mass flow. The study is conducted via wall-resolved and wall-modeled large-eddy simulation using two independent CFD solvers: Alya, a finite-element-based solver; and charLES, a finite-volume-based solver. Our approach is first validated in a NACA4412, for which numerical and experimental results are already available in the literature. The performance of synthetic jets is evaluated for two flow configurations: a SD7003 airfoil at moderate Reynolds number with laminar separation bubble, which is representative of Micro Air Vehicles, and the high-lift configuration of the JAXA Standard Model at realistic Reynolds numbers for landing. In both cases, our predictions indicate that, at high angles of attack, the control successfully eliminates the laminar/turbulent recirculations located downstream the actuator, which increases the aerodynamic performance. Our efforts illustrate the technology-readiness of large-eddy simulation in the design of control strategies for real-world external aerodynamic applications.

Using conceptors to manage neural long-term memories for temporal patterns

Biological brains can learn, recognize, organize, and re-generate large repertoires of temporal patterns. Here I propose a mechanism of neurodynamical pattern learning and representation, called conceptors, which offers an integrated account of a number of such phenomena and functionalities. It becomes possible to store a large number of temporal patterns in a single recurrent neural network. In the recall process, stored patterns can be morphed and "focussed". Parametric families of patterns can be learnt from a very small number of examples. Stored temporal patterns can be content-addressed in ways that are analog to recalling static patterns in Hopfield networks.

—Computational Intelligence methods for automatic generation of sport training plans in individual sport disciplines have achieved a mature phase. In order to confirm their added value, they have been deployed into practice. As a result, several methods have been developed for generating well formulated training plans on computers automatically that, typically, depend on the collection of past sport activities. However, monitoring the realization of the performed training sessions still represents a bottleneck in automating the process of sport training as a whole. The objective of this paper is to present a new low-cost and efficient embedded device for monitoring the realization of sport training sessions that is dedicated to monitor cycling training sessions. We designed and developed a new bike computer, i.e. the AST-Monitor, that can be mounted easily on almost every bicycle. The aforementioned bike computer is based on the Raspberry Pi device that supports different external sensors for capturing the data during the realization of sport training sessions. An adjusted GUI tailored to the needs of athletes is developed, along with the hardware. The proof of concept study, using the AST-Monitor in practice, revealed the potential of the proposed solution for monitoring of realized sport training sessions automatically. The new device also opens the door for the future utilization of Artificial Intelligence in a wide variety of sports. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Due to their advantages and role in the beyond fifth-generation mobile network, free-space optical (FSO) communication systems continue to gain attention. The line-of-sight (LoS) link in FSO communications is fundamental as it delivers all the power detected by the user. Therefore, its obstruction is detrimental to the transmission system. In the event of an obstruction, the LoS requirements can be met by introducing the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology. However, with the implementation of an RIS infrastructure, FSO channels are divided into two sub-channels, creating an inherent diversity end-to-end (e2e) channel model. In this paper, leveraging on the Meijer G-functions, which are symbolic representations of mathematical functions, we derive symbolic models for e2e RIS-assisted FSO systems that are built on the probability density functions (PDFs) of the fading model characterizing the sub-channels. We study some of the most popular models, derive closed-form expressions of PDFs, cumulative distributions, and moment-generating functions that are further exploited to analyze systems’ performance. By comparing scenarios in which the sub-channels are similar and different, we provide a clear understanding of how the overall RIS-assisted FSO channel behaves, along with comparative results based on commonly used models. © 2023, CC BY.

Fake news detection in Spanish using deep learning techniques

This paper addresses the problem of fake news detection in Spanish using Machine Learning techniques. It is fundamentally the same problem tackled for the English language;however, there is not a significant amount of publicly available and adequately labeled fake news in Spanish to effectively train a Machine Learning model, similarly to those proposed for the English language. Therefore, this work explores different training strategies and architectures to establish a baseline for further research in this area. Four datasets were used, two in English and two in Spanish, and four experimental schemes were tested, including a baseline with classical Machine Learning models, trained and validated using a small dataset in Spanish. The remaining schemes include state-of-the-art Deep Learning models trained (or fine-tuned) and validated in English, trained and validated in Spanish, and fitted in English and validated with automatic translated Spanish sentences. The Deep Learning architectures were built on top of different pre-trained Word Embedding representations, including GloVe, ELMo, BERT, and BETO (a BERT version trained on a large corpus in Spanish). According to the results, the best strategy was a combination of a pre-trained BETO model and a Recurrent Neural Network based on LSTM layers, yielding an accuracy of up to 80%;nonetheless, a baseline model using a Random Forest estimator obtained similar outcomes. Additionally, the translation strategy did not yield acceptable results because of the propagation error;there was also observed a significant difference in models performance when trained in English or Spanish, mainly attributable to the number of samples available for each language. In this letter, we propose a control scheme for regulating the voltage in Direct Current (DC) power networks. In contrast with other works in the literature where the loads are assumed to be constant, we consider uncertain time-varying loads described as the outputs of nonlinear dynamical exosystems with uncertain parameters. Based on the output regulation methodology, the proposed control scheme ensures the robust stability of the overall network and achieves voltage regulation in presence of impedance (Z), current (I), and power (P) loads. The simulation results illustrate excellent performance of the proposed control scheme.

Diffraction of pulsed electromagnetic (EM) waves in a slot excited Fabry Perot type resonator antenna is studied analytically in the modified Kirchhoff approximation. Closed-form space-time expressions for the radiated EM fields are found using the Cagniard-DeHoop technique. Illustrative numerical examples are given.

We present a fast and precise vision-based software intended for multiple robot localization. The core component of the proposed localization system is an efficient method for black and white circular pattern detection. The method is robust to variable lighting conditions, achieves sub-pixel precision, and its computational complexity is independent of the processed image size. With off-the-shelf computational equipment and low-cost camera, its core algorithm is able to process hundreds of images per second while tracking hundreds of objects with millimeter precision. We propose a mathematical model of the method that allows to calculate its precision, area of coverage, and processing speed from the camera's intrinsic parameters and hardware's processing capacity. The correctness of the presented model and performance of the algorithm in real-world conditions are verified in several experiments. Apart from the method description, we also publish its source code; so, it can be used as an enabling technology for various mobile robotics problems.
