This chapter presents a platform for supporting education tasks;we call it SWAD (in Spanish, it stands for Web-System for Education Support). This platform has been gradually developed during the last 7 years and is currently used at the University of Granada in more than 578 different subjects of different degrees. We describe here the various web services provided by the platform for students and educators, such as electronic index card, class photograph, document downloading, student self-assessment through multiple-choice exam, online checking of grades, internal web mail, discussion forums and electronic blackboard. The chapter also gives details about its implementation and provides evaluation statistics about its use and users' opinions after testing the platform. © 2007 Springer.

In this paper a fuzzy C-means (FCM) based approach for speech/non-speech discrimination is developed to build an effective voice activity detection (VAD) algorithm. The proposed VAD method is based on a soft-decision clustering approach built over a ratio of subband energies that improves recognition performance in noisy environments. The accuracy of the FCM-VAD algorithm lies in the use of a decision function defined over a multiple-observation (MO) window of averaged subband energy ratio and the modeling of noise subspace into fuzzy prototypes. In addition, time efficiency is also reached due to the clustering approach which is fundamental in VAD real time applications, i.e. speech recognition. An exhaustive analysis on the Spanish SpeechDat-Car databases is conducted in order to assess the performance of the proposed method and to compare it to existing standard VAD methods. The results show improvements in detection accuracy over standard VADs and a representative set of recently reported VAD algorithms. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

A new general multi-objective optimization heuristic algorithm, suitable for being applied to continuous multi-objective optimization problems is proposed. It deals with the problem at hand in a fast and efficient way. It combines ideas from different multi-objective and single-objective optimization evolutionary algorithms, although it also incorporates new devices which help to reduce the computational requirements, and also to improve the quality of the provided solutions. To show its applicability, a bi-objective competitive facility location and design problem is considered. This problem has been previously tackled through exact general methods, but they require high computational effort. A comprehensive computational study shows that the heuristic method is competitive, being able to reduce, in average, the computing time of the exact method by approximately 98%, and offering good quality in the final solutions. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, we present a tool devised for the automatic design and optimization of bioinspired visual processing models using reconfigurable hardware. We have focused on the simulation and optimization characteristics of our system. We also present a retina-like processing system based on a PCI-based FPGA board as an example. The whole system is intended for the design and analysis of real-time vision processing schemes. The top-down design path of our system involves a high level synthesis scheme while allowing different strategies for optimizing the system via the CodeSimulink codesign tool. © 2006 IEEE.

In this work we present a virtual whiteboard and chat tool which has been developed and integrated in a learning management system (SWAD). It is being used as a teaching aid for several degrees at the University of Granada (UGR). Since it started being used, at the end of academic year 2006/2007, it has been successfully used in several courses. This new tool solves some of the disadvantages that appear in other similar chat systems. We may remark as its main features the following: user identification by the use of photographs and full names, chat and whiteboard sessions storage, its ease of use and its accessibility, in the sense that it is able to work in a wide variety of platforms and does not require any installation process. In this paper we intend to motivate its usefulness and to describe the application itself, giving some details about its implementation;besides, we will show some use statistics and will propose some future work. © 2008 IADIS.

Nowadays there are many microarray gene expression datasets which are available by means of public repositories. Nevertheless, the fact is that most of them are low-scale analysis with a little number of samples. Consequently, integrating different data from several independent studies which try to treat a similar disease may be seen as a good option to tackle with the scarce number of samples that can be collected by only one study. In this paper we take a step beyond this approach and we merge also datasets from different microarray technologies, namely both Illumina and Affymetrix. Thanks to that we achieve a bigger database of lung cancer studies in order to obtain more significantly expressed genes in the differential gene expression analysis.

Two new models for sitting a new facility in a competitive environment are revised. Both the location and the quality of the new facility are to be found, so as to maximize the profit obtained by the locating firm. The patronizing behavior of customers is assumed to be probabilistic, i.e., they split their demand among all the existing facilities in the area, proportionally to the attraction they feel for them. Contrarily to what is commonly done in literature, the demand is not fixed, but varies depending on the location of the facilities. The first model assumes a static scenario, whereas in the second one a competing chain reacts by location a single new facility too, leading to a Stackelberg (or leader-follower) problem. The new continuous location models lead to hard-to-solve global optimization problems. A new evolutionary algorithm called UEGO was used to deal with those problems. The computational results showed its usefulness and robustness. Parallel implementations of UEGO were also presented to cope with large instances. Future trends which will allow the construction of an expert system for facility location are also discussed. © 2013 IADIS.

In this paper we report the results obtained using a kernel-based approach to predict the temporal development of four response signals in the process control of a glass melting tank with 16 input parameters. The data set is a revised version1 from the modelling challenge in EUNITE-2003. The central difficulties are: large time-delays between changes in the inputs and the outputs, large number of data, and a general lack of knowledge about the relevant variables that intervene in the process. The methodology proposed here comprises Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Regularization Networks (RN). We use the idea of sparse approximation both as a means of regularization and as a means of reducing the computational complexity. Furthermore, we will use an incremental approach to add new training examples to the kernel-based method and efficiently update the current solution. This allows us to use a sophisticated learning scheme, where we iterate between prediction and training, with good computational efficiency and satisfactory results. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

The Input/Output (I/O) topic as a branch of the computer architecture field has been considered a key topic in both the computer Science and the computer Engineering curricula. Years of teaching have demonstrated this topic to be difficult for students to understand. Having made some changes to the methodology used to teach the topic and to the infrastructure used for practice, we have analysed the results and concluded that the research should be more expert-centric than novice-centric. In this turnaround some exam questions have been analysed in order to determine the real learning outcomes achieved.

This work shows a new method for blind separation of sources, based on geometrical considerations concerning the observation space. This new method is applied to a mixture of several sources and it obtains the estimated coefficients of the unknown mixture matrix A and separates the unknown sources. The principles of the new method and a description of the algorithm followed by some speed enhancements are shown. Finally, we illustrate with simulations of several source distributions how the algorithm performs.
