Researchers often come under pressure when facing the ever-increasing demand to produce a progressive number of publications, resorting to hiring the services of paper mills. These are unofficial, and often illegitimate, organizations providing ready-made questionable research components and services, posing a threat to the research integrity, scientific ecosystem, and publishers. Identifying paper mill material is a challenging and laborious process, while the increasing number of Artificial Intelligence services generating human-like text obstructs this process. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the research integrity domain by proposing the PaperMill Detection manuscript screening framework. By leveraging contextual signals, it measures the probability of a document being the result of a paper mill organization or generated by Artificial Intelligence. The combination of these signals can facilitate the detection of questionable scientific content. Our evaluation has revealed that the proposed approach outperforms other open-source and commercial solutions in all examined evaluation metrics, achieving an F1 score of 0.97. © 2023 IEEE.

As the development of wireless networks advances towards the deployment of 6G technology, ensuring robust security measures becomes crucial. In this paper, we propose 6G-SECUREIDS, a novel intrusion detection system designed specifically for 6G wireless networks. The system leverages machine learning techniques and blockchain technology to detect and mitigate security threats, safeguard data privacy, and ensure efficient and optimized training. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of the system, with the clients achieving high accuracy scores across different model architectures. The promising results highlight the potential of 6G-SECUREIDS as a valuable security solution for future 6G networks, contributing to the overall protection and integrity of the wireless communication ecosystem. © 2023 IEEE.

Home Automation System based on Intelligent Transducer Enablers

This paper presents a novel home automation system named HASITE (Home Automation System based on Intelligent Transducer Enablers), which has been specifically designed to identify and configure transducers easily and fast. These features are especially useful in situations where many transducers are deployed, since their setup becomes a cumbersome task that consumes a significant amount of time and human resources. HASITE simplifies the deployment of a home automation system by using wireless networks, and both self-configuration and self-registration protocols. Thanks to the application of such three elements, HASITE is able to add new transducers by just powering them up. According to tests performed in different realistic scenarios, a transducer is ready to be used in less than 13 seconds. Moreover, all HASITE functionalities can be accessed through an API, which also allows for the integration of third-party systems. As an example, an Android application based on the API is presented. Remote users can use it to interact with transducers by just using a regular smartphone or a tablet. © 2024, CC BY.

Smart cities have been a very active research area in the past 20 years, while continuously adapting to new technological advancements and keeping up with the times regarding sustainability and climate change. In this context, there have been numerous proposals to expand the scope of smart cities, focusing on resilience and sustainability, among other aspects, resulting in terms like smart sustainable cities. At the same time, there is an ongoing discussion regarding the degree in which smart cities put people at their centre. In this work, we argue toward expanding the current smart city definition by integrating the circular economy as one of its central pillars and adopting the term smart (and) circular city. We discuss the ways a smart and circular city encompasses both sustainability and smartness in an integral manner, while also being well-positioned to foster novel business activity and models and helping to place citizens at the heart of the smart city. In this sense, we also argue that previous research in smart cities and technologies, such as those related to Industry 4.0, can serve as a cornerstone to implement circular economy activities within cities, at a scale that exceeds current activities that are based on more conventional approaches. We also outline current open challenges in this domain and research questions that still need to be addressed.

Cancer is a widespread global health problem, claiming millions of lives each year, and skin cancer represents a significant threat as it is one of the most common types. Early tumor detection via medical imaging is critical for effective treatment. Leveraging artificial intelligence, particularly novel models like Transformers, presents promising avenues for improved diagnosis. This paper explores the efficacy of a Collective Intelligence approach using AI in classifying cancerous and non-cancerous tumors, aiming to reduce classification errors and support clinical decision-making. We created five different configurations using various datasets to compare the results. The results show solid performance for the CI in the evaluated tasks, reaching up to 75.89% accuracy. The lack of images in certain classes significantly contributes to overfitting. It is suggested to explore data expansion strategies and improve consistency in image capture for future work.

We discuss effects of electromigration in processes of nano-structured thin films growth at condensation from gaseous phase end epitaxial growth in the framework of numerical simulations. It will be shown that an increase in the strength of the electric field applied to the substrate promotes formation of percolate structures of adsorbate. We will analyze dynamics of the surface morphology change in details. This study provides insight into details of electromigration effects at self-organization of adatoms into percolating adsorbate islands during nano-structured thin films growth at both condensation from the gaseous phase and epitaxial growth of multi-layer pyramidal-like adsorbate structures. © 2022 IEEE.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of a people tracking system could have been crucial, particularly in sensitive environments, such as hospitals. DPPL Hallway Tracker is a framework that uses security camera footage to determine which rooms in a corridor a person has entered. It generates a database containing all the people identified and allows quick identification of potential cases of infection based on the time spent in a room and its maximum capacity. DPPL Hallway Tracker is structured in two phases: detection and re-identification. In the first phase, it exploits Mask RCNN to identify people and room doors. In the second one, it uses the deep association metric model from DeepSORT to re-identify a person as he leaves a room. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors.
