Fuzzy ontologies extend classical ontologies to allow the representation of imprecise and vague knowledge. Although a relatively important amount of work has been carried out in the last years and they have been successfully used in several applications, several notions from fuzzy logic, such as fuzzy integrals, have not been considered yet in fuzzy ontologies. In this work, we show how to support fuzzy integrals in fuzzy ontologies. As a theoretical formalism, we provide the syntax and semantics of a fuzzy Description Logic with fuzzy integrals. We also provide a reasoning algorithm for a family of fuzzy integrals and show how to encode them into the language Fuzzy OWL 2. © 2011 IEEE.

Fuzzy Description Logics (DLs) are a formalism for the representation of structured knowledge affected by imprecision or vagueness. In the setting of fuzzy DLs, restricting to a finite set of degrees of truth has proved to be useful. In this paper, we propose finite fuzzy DLs as a generalization of existing approaches. We assume a finite totally ordered set of linguistic terms or labels, which is very useful in practice since expert knowledge is usually expressed using linguistic terms. Then, we consider any smooth t-norm defined over this set of degrees of truth. In particular, we focus on the finite fuzzy DL ALCH, studying some logical properties, and showing the decidability of the logic by presenting a reasoning preserving reduction to the non-fuzzy case.

In order for Semantic Web applications to be successful a key component should be their ability to take advantage of rich content descriptions in meaningful ways. Reasoning consists a key part in this process and it consequently appears at the core of the Semantic Web architecture stack. From a practical point of view however, it is not always clear how applications may take advantage of the knowledge discovery capabilities that reasoning can offer to the Semantic Web. In this paper we present and survey current methods that can be used to integrate inference-based services with such applications. We argue that an important decision is to have reasoning tasks logically and physically distributed. To this end, we discuss relevant protocols and languages such as DIG and SPARQL and give an overview of our Knowledge Discovery Interface. Further, we describe the lessons-learned from remotely invoking reasoning services through the OWL API. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper gives an account of how traditional metadata application profiles are related to Web ontologies and Description Logics. It is shown that metadata profiles can be formalized into Description Logics;oddly enough though, OWL 2, with its current expressivity, is shown to be inadequate for this purpose. First, we give an overview of the recent proposal for representing metadata profiles using the notion of Description Set Profiles and XML Schema. We point out the necessity of an additional representation scheme, using also ontological languages. Following, we introduce a possible translation of Description Set Profiles to Description Logics and identify the required expressivity characteristics that are essential for such a translation. The relationship of this representation to OWL Integrity Constraints is also examined. Finally, we discuss what expense do these characteristics put on to the complexity of reasoning. © 2010 ACM.

This work investigates the design of reset control systems with reset actions at fixed reset instants, and their application to a class of Networked Control systems. The reset law is simplified for the reset instants to be periodic, but on the other hand a key idea is the use of a variable reset value at each instant that minimizes the error between consecutive reset actions. Stability conditions under variable network delays will be given for these systems. Simulation results show that the proposed reset compensator may overcome fundamental limitations of linear compensation.

The use of optimization methods is ubiquitous in communications and signal processing. In particular, convex optimization techniques have been widely used in the design and analysis of single user and multiuser communication systems and signal processing algorithms (e.g., [1] and [2]). Game theory is a field of applied mathematics that describes and analyzes scenarios with interactive decisions (e.g., [3] and [4]). Roughly speaking, a game can be represented as a set of coupled optimization problems. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in adopting cooperative and noncooperative game theoretic approaches to model many communications and networking problems, such as power control and resource sharing in wireless/wired and peer-to-peer networks (e.g., [5][12]), cognitive radio systems (e.g., [13][17]), and distributed routing, flow, and congestion control in communication networks (e.g., [18] and [19] and references therein). Two recent special issues on the subject are [20] and [21]. A more general framework suitable for investigating and solving various optimization problems and equilibrium models, even when classical game theory may fail, is known to be the variation inequality (VI) problem that constitutes a very general class of problems in nonlinear analysis [22]. © 2010 IEEE.

We present a factor analysis method that accounts for possible temporal misalignment of the factor loadings across the population of samples. Our main hypothesis is that the data contains a subset of variables with similar but delayed profiles obeying a consistent precedence ordering relationship. Our model is motivated by the difficulty of gene expression analysis across subjects who have common patterns of immune response but show different onset times after a uniform innoculation time of a viral pathogen. The proposed method is based on a linear model with additional degrees of freedom that account for each subject's inherent delays. We present an algorithm to fit this model in a totally unsupervised manner and demonstrate its effectiveness on extracting gene expression factors affecting host response using a flu-virus human challenge study dataset. © 2010 IEEE.

We propose in this study a hierarchical method for the problem of scheduling N jobs on M parallel machines where each machine should be maintained once during the planning horizon. The maintenance tasks should be continuously executed because the maintenance resources are not sufficient. Our objective is to find a schedule composed of the jobs and the maintenance tasks in which the total sum of the job's weighted completion times and the preventive maintenance cost are simultaneously minimized. The proposed hierarchical method is essentially based on a linear model and an Evolutionary algorithm. Computational experiments are performed on randomly generated instances. The results show that the proposed method is able to produce appropriate solutions for the problem.
