Hierarchical Optimal Operation of Continuous-Batch Processes

This paper presents a methodology for the optimal operation of mixed continuous-batch processes based on a hierarchical decomposition of the problem: local dynamic optimizers perform the economic optimization of the batch units or continuous plants, while the upper layer deals with the scheduling of the batch units and the coordination of the flows and properties of sub-processes using a novel simplified model built with predictions from the lower level. The approach is illustrated with a case study from the sugar industry corresponding to the joint operation of the evaporation and crystallization sections operated to maximize production with minimum energy consumption. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. The unfolding climate crisis has resulted in a rising interest for increasing sustainability awareness and achieving energy savings worldwide. Several interventions within educational environments have been aimed at mobilizing younger audiences towards such goals. However, most of the interventions carried out so far are based on a subset of possible tools (e.g., IoT monitoring, gamification) and offer "all or nothing"approaches, which do not cope well with the uniqueness of schools and the need to adapt interventions to specific contexts (e.g. school size, building, curriculum, teacher involvement). We present a large-scale intervention in 25 school buildings in Europe over the course of two school years. Our intervention was based on the installation of a relatively low-cost IoT infrastructure in schools, that produced real-time energy-related data from the school buildings involved, and the application of a strategy combining, in a flexible and customizable way, educational activities, monitoring tools, gamification, and competition to motivate behavior change and achieve energy savings. Overall, 2983 students and 204 educators were directly involved to a variable degree of participation. Our results indicate a positive overall result in terms of short-term energy savings in most schools involved, with an average reduction of 20-25% in the energy that could be affected by end-users, as well as a 32.9% increase after the intervention in students self-reporting good or very good sustainability awareness. These findings suggest that such interventions can be a valuable step towards educating young students regarding sustainability and towards sustainable schools, if designed and implemented properly. © 2014 IEEE.

The joint design of processes and control is an integration technique that incorporates control requirements in the process design stage. This paper presents an integrated design methodology and illustrate it with an alternative design for a real plant of activated sludge processing. The process design obtained is not only optimum from the economic point of view, but exhibits certain previously fixed dynamic characteristics. The point of operation and the size of the processing units are obtained through mathematical programming, together with the parameters of the controller. © Copyright 2007 IFAC.

Distributed control systems (DCS) are based on assignments of control loops and supervision points to different units. In a first approach, these assignments are made statically and following given distribution criteria. This paper presents a proposal of communications system over a DCS which allows the interchanging of assignments between the control units. The objective is to provide a frame for dynamical load balancing in the system with reactivity against meaningful variables in the system such as changes in the process, traffic demands or computing load in every processor. An approach to assist the determination of the best time-after-injection for taking an scintigram in bone scanning is proposed. More precisely, a technique is discussed to estimate the evolution of the portions, in different compartments of the body, of the injected dose using a model of the radionuclide distribution dynamics, the available measurements and information on variations of the parameters. At each time, the possible range of variation of these unmeasured states is evaluated, and from this the expected evolution of the contrast of the image is obtained. This makes it possible to predict the best time for taking the image. To show the applicability, a practical example is provided.

This paper presents a type of solar thermal power plant and also studies the efficiency of the common type of this distributed generation resource. In order to improve the efficiency of the power station, several techniques are studied such as the combined cycle plant, the thermoelectric generator and the intelligent control application. The thermodynamic analysis of the power plant and the performance of the equipment with an intelligent control system are validated by the developed experimental prototype. © 2019 IEEE.

Many processes, even being of a continuous nature, involve in its operation signals or rules different from the classical continuous variables represented by real variables and modelled by DAE. In practice they include on/off valves or other binary actuators, are subjected to logical operational rules, or are mixed with sequential operations. As a result, classical control does not fit very well with the overall operation of the plant. In this paper we consider the problem of hybrid control from a predictive control perspective, showing in a practical non trivial example with changing process structure, how the problem can be stated and solved.
