Based on some of our previous works, we show in this paper the possibility of accelerating complex analyses (such as shape analyses, dependence analyses...) thanks to a complete def-use chain analysis. In particular, we put our efforts in accelerating the shape analysis technique developed in our research group. Using the gathered Def-Use(DU) information, we have implemented a code slicing pass that computes the relevant statements required by a client analysis. This work is part of a heap-directed pointer analysis framework, where our final goal is the automatic parallelization of codes based on heap-stored dynamic/recursive data structures. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

In this work we present a virtual whiteboard and chat tool which has been developed and integrated in a learning management system (SWAD). It is being used as a teaching aid for several degrees at the University of Granada (UGR). Since it started being used, at the end of academic year 2006/2007, it has been successfully used in several courses. This new tool solves some of the disadvantages that appear in other similar chat systems. We may remark as its main features the following: user identification by the use of photographs and full names, chat and whiteboard sessions storage, its ease of use and its accessibility, in the sense that it is able to work in a wide variety of platforms and does not require any installation process. In this paper we intend to motivate its usefulness and to describe the application itself, giving some details about its implementation;besides, we will show some use statistics and will propose some future work. © 2008 IADIS.

We present a method to cluster the information contained in 3-dimensional brain images where each cluster incorporates a contiguous brain region with similar activation. The grey-level distribution of a brain image is approximated by a sum of Gaussian functions and the parameters of the Gaussian mixture are determined by a maximum likelihood criterion via the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. Each cluster, therefore, is represented by a multivariate Gaussian function with a definite centre coordinate and a certain shape. This approach leads to a drastic compression of the information contained in the brain image and serves as a starting point for a variety of possible feature extraction methods for the diagnosis of brain diseases. © 2008 IEEE.

In the new multicore architecture arena, the problem of improving the performance of a code is more in the software side than in the hardware one. However, optimizing irregular dynamic data structure based codes for such architectures is not easy, either by hand or compiler assisted. Regarding this last approach, shape analysis is a static technique that achieves abstraction of dynamic memory and can help to disambiguate, quite accurately, memory references in programs that create and traverse recursive data structures. This kind of analysis has promising applicability for accurate data dependence tests in loops or recursive functions that traverse dynamic data structures. However, support for interprocedural programs in shape analysis is still a challenge, especially in the presence of recursive functions. In this work we present a novel fully context-sensitive interprocedural shape analysis algorithm that supports recursion and can be used to uncover parallelism. Our approach is based on three key ideas: i) intraprocedural support based on "coexistent links sets" to precisely describe the memory configurations during the abstract interpretation of the C code; ii) interprocedural support based on "recursive flow links" to trace the state of pointers in previous calls; and Hi) annotations of the read/written heap locations during the program analysis. We present preliminary experiments that reveal that our technique compares favorably with related work, and obtains precise memory abstractions in a variety of recursive programs that create and manipulate dynamic data structures. We have also implemented a data dependence test over our interprocedural shape analysis. With this test we have obtained promising results, automatically detecting parallelism in three C codes, which have been successfully parallelized.

In this work, it is demonstrated that relatively simple image processing functions based on symmetry measurements can be used to obtain high performance vehicle authentication, creating an "image signature" for every vehicle. On that basis, distinctive parts of the vehicle frontal view such as the headlights and the logo area can be segmented. A novel neural network application, properly trained, provides adequate vehicle manufacturer recognition when used in conjunction with a previously developed license plate recognition module. It is also shown that image processing functions based on Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) measurements can be used to obtain high performance object features location, creating a keypoint fingerprint for every feature. A grid of SIFT keypoints was drawn and a neural network was used also for vehicle model recognition.

This chapter presents a platform for supporting education tasks;we call it SWAD (in Spanish, it stands for Web-System for Education Support). This platform has been gradually developed during the last 7 years and is currently used at the University of Granada in more than 578 different subjects of different degrees. We describe here the various web services provided by the platform for students and educators, such as electronic index card, class photograph, document downloading, student self-assessment through multiple-choice exam, online checking of grades, internal web mail, discussion forums and electronic blackboard. The chapter also gives details about its implementation and provides evaluation statistics about its use and users' opinions after testing the platform. © 2007 Springer.

In this paper we give an overview of recent results on the rate maximization game in the Gaussian frequency-selective interference channel. We focus on the competitive maximization of information rates, subject to global power and spectral mask constraints. To achieve the so-called Nash equilibrium points of the game Yu, Ginis and Cioffl proposed the sequential Iterative Waterfilling Algorithm (IWFA), where, at each iteration, the users choose, one after the other, their power allocation to maximize their own information rate, treating the interference generated by the others as additive colored Gaussian noise. To overcome the potential slow convergence of the sequential update, specially when the number of users is large, the simultaneous IWFA was proposed by the authors, where, at each iteration, all the users update their power allocations simultaneously, rather than sequentially. Recently, the authors showed that both the sequential and the simultaneous IWFAs are just special cases of a more general unified framework, given by the totally asynchronous IWFA. In this more general algorithm, the users update their power spectral density in a completely distributed and asynchronous way. Furthermore, the asynchronous setup includes another form of lack of synchronism where the transmission by the different users contains time and frequency synchronization offsets. A unified set of convergence conditions were provided for the whole class of algorithms obtained from the asynchronous IWFA. Interestingly, there is a key result used in the proof of convergence of the algorithms: an alternative interpretation of the waterfilling operator as a projector.

This paper considers the competitive maximization of information rates in the Gaussian frequency-selective interference channel, subject to global power and spectral mask constraints. We focus on the practical case in which the transmission by the different users contains time and frequency synchronization offsets. We propose a unified framework based on a distributed algorithm called asynchronous iterative waterfilling algorithm. In this algorithm, the users update their power spectral density in a completely distributed and asynchronous way: some users may update their power allocation more frequently than others and they may even use outdated measurements of the received interference. Moreover the users are not required to know time and frequency offsets. Our main contribution is to provide a unified set of convergence conditions for the whole class of algorithms obtained from the asynchronous iterative water-filling algorithm. © 2007 IEEE.
