Background: Tree reconciliation problems have long been studied in phylogenetics. A particular variant of the reconciliation problem for a gene tree T and a species tree S assumes that for each interior vertex x of T it is known whether x represents a speciation or a duplication. This problem appears in the context of analyzing orthology data. Results: We show that S is a species tree for T if and only if S displays all rooted triples of T that have three distinct species as their leaves and are rooted in a speciation vertex. A valid reconciliation map can then be found in polynomial time. Simulated data shows that the event-labeled gene trees convey a large amount of information on underlying species trees, even for a large percentage of losses. Conclusions: The knowledge of event labels in a gene tree strongly constrains the possible species tree and, for a given species tree, also the possible reconciliation maps. Nevertheless, many degrees of freedom remain in the space of feasible solutions. A new class of planar multi-band bandstop filters (BSFs) with spectrally-agile stopbands in terms of center frequency and bandwidth are presented. They are based on the in-series cascade of several frequency-reconfigurable multi-stopband filtering sections. Each of these sections is shaped by N tunable resonators - center-frequency control - that interact with the same non-resonating node (NRN) through independently-controlled impedance inverters - bandwidth reconfiguration - for an N-band BSF transfer function. Additional features of this adaptive multi-band BSF approach are: i) independent control of each rejection band with no influence on the remaining ones, ii) stopband-merging capability to effectively attain controllability in the number of generated stopbands along with increased bandwidth flexibility for them, and iii) concept scalability to any number of stopbands and poles. Its main operational principles are theoretically demonstrated through the coupling-matrix formalism for the engineered multi-band BSF configuration. More-over, for experimental verification, a mechanically-reconfigurable three-band BSF prototype in the 0.9-1.2-GHz frequency range was manufactured in microstrip technology and characterized.

We describe a framework for model identification and model order reduction (MOR) of highly dynamic microgrids based on a high fidelity hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform. A synchronous generator that is connected in different configurations is analyzed to analytically obtain small-signal linearized models which are compared against HIL-obtained data. The framework is applied to a small microgrid consisting of a synchronous generator, inverter-based distributed energy resource (DER), and linear loads, and provides insights into the estimated machine transfer functions. We propose that HIL based framework could be a suitable tool for model identification, MOR, and controller optimization of complex dynamic microgrids.

The modular decomposition of a graph G = (V;E) does not contain prime modules if and only if G is a cograph, that is, if no quadruple of vertices induces a simple connected path P4. The cograph editing problem consists in inserting into and deleting from G a set F of edges so that H = (V,EΔF) is a cograph and |F| is minimum. This NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem has recently found applications, e.g., in the context of phylogenetics. Efficient heuristics are hence of practical importance. The simple characterization of cographs in terms of their modular decomposition suggests that instead of editing G one could operate directly on the modular decomposition. We show here that editing the induced P4s is equivalent to resolving prime modules by means of a suitable defined merge operation on the submodules. Moreover, we characterize so-called module-preserving edit sets and demonstrate that optimal pairwise sequences of module-preserving edit sets exist for every non-cograph. This eventually leads to an exact algorithm for the cograph editing problem. In addition, we provide two heuristics with time complexity O(|V|3), resp., O(|V|2). Copyright © 2017, The Authors. An original architecture of a fully-reconfigurable bandpass filter (BPF) is presented. It consists of two series-cascaded-through inter-stage connecting lines - spectrally-over-lapped second-order BPFs and a filtering cell that generates two out-of-band transmission zeros (TZs) for selectivity enhancement. The three inter-cascaded filtering blocks comprise six frequency-tunable resonators that interact by means of static impedance inverters. By controlling the natural frequencies of the resonators in all filtering units through variable-reactance elements, an overall frequency-agile bandpass transfer function in terms of center frequency, bandwidth, and TZs is attained. Furthermore, since the passband-width is controlled without altering the inter-resonator couplings, benefits are obtained in terms of lower in-band insertion loss and larger bandwidth tuning ratio that can be practically reduced to zero (i.e., intrinsic switching-off state). The operating principles of the devised filter-cascade concept are expounded. Also, an evanescent-mode cavity-resonator prototype with tunable response in the range 2.9-3.5 GHz is built and tested for experimental verification. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the developed BPF circuit demonstrates one of the highest electronic-reconfiguration capabilities reported up to date for 3-D BPFs.

Camera calibration method for an automotive safety driving system

This paper presents a camera calibration method in order to estimate the lane detection and inter-vehicle distance estimation system for an automotive safety driving system. In order to implement the lane detection and vision-based inter-vehicle distance estimation to the embedded navigations or black box systems, it is necessary to consider the computation time and algorithm complexity. The process of camera calibration estimates the horizon, the position of the car's hood and the lane width for extraction of region of interest (ROI) from input image sequences. The precision of the calibration method is very important to the lane detection and inter-vehicle distance estimation. The proposed calibration method consists of three main steps: 1) horizon area determination;2) estimation of the car's hood area;and 3) estimation of initial lane width. Various experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method. © ICROS 2015.

The Bit coin currency is steadily growing in popularity as an alternative to physical currencies. This paper presents an approach for utilizing the Bit coin system for creating permanent messages that are located on computers worldwide. By manipulating the amount field of Bit coin transactions, messages can be embedded into the Bit coin block chain. This approach was implemented by extending the Bit coin-Qt v0.7.2 application and the source code is freely available.

A new class of multi-functional low-pass filters (LPFs) with multiple dynamically-controlled rejection bands in their passband is reported. They are based on series-cascaded RF modules that functionalize a low-pass (LP) transfer function with/without an embedded absorptive notch (AN). In this manner, multiple rejection bands that exhibit theoretically-infinite attenuation and do not affect the passband insertion loss (IL) are incorporated within the passband of a highly-selective LPF that features smaller size and lower IL than a conventional cascade of individual filter blocks. Further advantages include: i) scalability to an arbitrary number of rejection bands, ii) independent control of the ANs in terms of frequency and isolation (IS), and iii) the ability to control the number of active notches in the passband. The concept is experimentally validated through a manufactured lumped-element prototype with two frequency-tunable ANs. They are located within a low-IL (<0.8 dB) LPF with cut-off frequency of 765 MHz and wide out-of-band IS (<30 dB between 0.9-11 GHz). Moreover, they can be independently controlled or merged into a wider rejection band for frequencies between 275-491 MHz (1.8:1). Independent control of AN IS (15-58 dB) is also shown.

A new class of frequency-agile single/multi-band planar real-impedance transformers that feature bandpass filte-ring capabilities for their operative bands are proposed. They are based on the incorporation of single/multi-band quasi-bandpass filtering sections into a wide-band impedance transformer whose operational range covers the intended frequency-tuning range of the individually-controlled passbands. Thus, by controlling the natural frequencies of the resonators in these sections through variable capacitors, a tunable single/multi-band impedance-transformation/bandpass-filtering action is obtained. The operational foundations of this reconfigurable dual-function device, which can be applied to designs with an arbitrary number of bands, are expounded. Furthermore, as experimental demonstration, a three-band microstrip prototype with tunable bands throughout the range 1.2-1.8 GHz is developed and tested.

Clone detection can be used to achieve diverse objectives such as refactoring, program understanding, bug localization, and plagiarism detection, etc. Each goal takes a different perspective on clone information needs. Different clone detection tools report different information about clones. To gauge the suitability of a given clone detector for a particular user objective, we need to determine which information needs implied by the objective a clone detector addresses. In this paper, we make a first step toward gathering clone information needs from the description of user goals. The results of our analysis are useful for various stakeholders such as programmers, managers, tool developers, and researchers.
