Recent years have seen significant progress in improving both the efficiency and effectiveness of time series classification. However, because the best solution is typically the Nearest Neighbor algorithm with the relatively expensive Dynamic Time Warping as the distance measure, successful deployments on resource constrained devices remain elusive. Moreover, the recent explosion of interest in wearable devices, which typically have limited computational resources, has created a growing need for very efficient classification algorithms. A commonly used technique to glean the benefits of the Nearest Neighbor algorithm, without inheriting its undesirable time complexity, is to use the Nearest Centroid algorithm. However, because of the unique properties of (most) time series data, the centroid typically does not resemble any of the instances, an unintuitive and underappreciated fact. In this work we show that we can exploit a recent result to allow meaningful averaging of 'warped' times series, and that this result allows us to create ultra-efficient Nearest 'Centroid' classifiers that are at least as accurate as their more lethargic Nearest Neighbor cousins.

One of the main goals of systems biology models in a health-care context is to individualise models in order to compute patient-specific predictions for the time evolution of species (e.g., hormones) concentrations. In this paper we present a statistical model checking based approach that, given an inter-patient model and a few clinical measurements, computes a value for the model parameter vector (model individualisation) that, with high confidence, is a global minimum for the function evaluating the mismatch between the model predictions and the available measurements. We evaluate effectiveness of the proposed approach by presenting experimental results on using the GynCycle model (describing the feedback mechanisms regulating a number of reproductive hormones) to compute patient-specific predictions for the time evolution of blood concentrations of E2 (Estradiol), P4 (Progesterone), FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luteinizing Hormone) after a certain number of clinical measurements.

Numerous organisations are considering moving at least some of their existing applications to the cloud. A key motivating factor for this fast-paced adoption of cloud is the expectation of cost savings. Estimating what these cost savings might be requires comparing the known cost of running an application in-house with a predicted cost of its cloud deployment. A major problem with this approach is the lack of suitable techniques for predicting the cost of the virtual machines (VMs) that a cloud-deployed application requires in order to achieve a given service-level agreement. We introduce a technique that addresses this problem by using established results from queueing network theory to predict the minimum VM cost of cloud deployments starting from existing application logs. We describe how this formal technique can be used to predict the cost-performance trade-offs available for the cloud deployment of an application, and presents a case study based on a real-world webmail service. The optimal trajectory-tracking control of a Tri-TiltRotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle is the subject of this paper. This specific UAV design possesses the capability to control the orientation of its main rotors, thus enabling operation in both the Vertical Take-Off and Landing as well as the Fixed-Wing flight mode configuration. The translational controller developed is based on a Linear-Quadratic tracking scheme. Additionally to the proposed controller, the newly introduced capability for rotor-tilting, and thus thrust vectoring, as provided by this design is proposed for its utilization in the control of the longitudinal degree-of-freedom of the UAV. Simulation and experimental results are presented, demonstrating both the overall proposed controller's efficiency, as well as the clear advantage gained by the aforementioned proposed strategy, with regard to the controlled system's longitudinal control performance.
