Lightning risk assessment of a 170 kV GIS substation connected to the Hellenic transmission system through underground cables has been performed. Fast-front overvoltages impinging on the substation due to shielding failure and backflashover of the incoming overhead transmission lines have been computed with the aid of ATPEMTP simulations and evaluated with respect to the insulation level of the substation equipment. The mean time between failures of the substation is greatly reduced for higher tower grounding resistance and varies significantly among lightning attachment models employed for the evaluation of the lightning performance of the incoming overhead transmission lines. Implementation of the IEEE Std 1243:1997 in lightning risk assessment of substations imposes high requirements on protection against incoming fast-front overvoltage surges.

This work investigates the design of reset control systems with reset actions at fixed reset instants, and their application to a class of Networked Control Systems. The reset law is simplified for the reset instants to be periodic, but on the other hand a key idea is the use of a variable reset value at each instant that minimizes the error between consecutive reset actions. Stability conditions under variable network delays will be given for these systems. Simulation results show that the proposed reset compensator may overcome fundamental limitations of linear compensation.

An alternative hardware implementation of a P1619 XTS-AES architecture, compared to the typical that have been proposed by now, is presented in this paper. The implementation is based on the use of two AES cores for simultaneous Tweak value calculation and block encoding/decoding operations. The implementation is efficient for burst mode of operation, decreasing by 25% the required time, exploiting pre-calculation of the tweak value. The overall performance satisfies the constraints for storage devices.

In recent years, the increasing importance of the computational systems biology is leading to an impressive growth of the knowledge of several real-life phenomena. In this framework, membrane computing is an emergent branch within natural computing that has been successfully used to model biological phenomena. The study of these phenomena usually requires the execution of virtual experiments using mechanisms of simulation, implying the development of ad-hoc tools to simulate. However, the advance of the research is demanding general solutions to avoid the necessity of custom software developments for each matter of study, when there are some common problems to resolve. Vision-based road detection is important in different areas of computer vision such as autonomous driving, car collision warning and pedestrian crossing detection. However, current vision-based road detection methods are usually based on low-level features and they assume structured roads, road homogeneity, and uniform lighting conditions. Therefore, in this paper, contextual 3D information is used in addition to low-level cues. Low-level photometric invariant cues are derived from the appearance of roads. Contextual cues used include horizon lines, vanishing points, 3D scene layout and 3D road stages. Moreover, temporal road cues are included. All these cues are sensitive to different imaging conditions and hence are considered as weak cues. Therefore, they are combined to improve the overall performance of the algorithm. To this end, the low-level, contextual and temporal cues are combined in a Bayesian framework to classify road sequences. Large scale experiments on road sequences show that the road detection method is robust to varying imaging conditions, road types, and scenarios (tunnels, urban and highway). Further, using the combined cues outperforms all other individual cues. Finally, the proposed method provides highest road detection accuracy when compared to state-of-the-art methods.
