In this paper an architecture for low cost robotic applications as well as its implementation in a commercial robot is presented. HumanPT architecture differs than other architectures because it is implemented on existing robotic systems (robot + robotic controller) and exploits the minimum communication facilities for real-time control that these systems provide. It is based on well-known communication methods like serial communication (USB, RS232, IEEE-1394) and Windows sockets (server-client model) and permits an important number of different type of components like actuators, sensors and particularly vision systems to be connected in a robotic system. The operating system (OS) used is Microsoft Windows, the most widely spread OS. The proposed architecture exploits features of this OS that is not a real-time one, to ensure - in case that the robotic system provide such a facility-control and real time communication with the robotic system controller and to integrate by means of sensors and actuators an important number of robotic tasks and procedures. This project uses an IDAC-1 board to sample and control the pH level in a tank. The whole control is performed through the Internet. The experimental arrangement is placed on the task location and the controlling computer is located in a different one. Internet is the transport media. The protocol used in this project is UDP/IP. The pH level is measured by a pH meter and its output is sampled by an A/D converter integrated on the IDAC-1. To change the pH level ON-OFF valves control the free flow of light solutions acid and alkaline. The controlling computer through the Internet acting as client asks for the pH level, the IDAC-1 responds as server with the 10-bit resolution sampling pH meter. If pH is away from the set point the corresponding valve opens, neutralizing this way the solution. The whole procedure is logged in a file on the controlling computer. This application can give the ability to the Internet user to monitor and control the pH of a solution anywhere in the Word Wide Web (WWW)

Although dedicated operating systems overcome this issue, they are difficult to develop or adapt. In this paper, we propose a framework, based on the component programming paradigm, which supports the development and adaptation of such operating systems. Modern communication environments tend to be complex, dynamic and highly distributed. For the provision of messaging in such environments multiple entities, providing different functionalities and located remotely from each other, must cooperate in order to perform different tasks and provide different kind of information for the completion of the service provision lifecycle. Within this paper we present an implementation analysis of the communication mechanism which was employed in a distributed brokerage framework for the provision of context aware personalized services. The paper focuses on the inter-broker communication mechanism which enables the transparent interaction between components located in different brokers. The mechanism was designed and implemented having in mind relevant requirements such as transparency, modularity and high availability. The design and implementation was based on web service practices and the SOAP protocol.

In this paper we present a possibility for integrating Anaphora Resolution (AR) in a system to automatically evaluate students' free-text answers. An initial discussion introduces some of the several methods that can be tried out. The implementation makes use of the AR-Engine RARE (Cristea et al. 02), integrated into the free-text answers assessor Atenea (Alfonseca & Pérez 04) to test these methods. RARE has been applied to find coreferential chains, and it has been found useful to extend the set of reference answers used by Atenea, by generating automatically new correct answers.

In this paper we define a model of a web multi-agent system that combines the use of Semantic Web technologies together with the application of user profiles to carry out information retrieval and filtering tasks. It is designed using fuzzy linguistic techniques which allow dealing with information in a user-friendly way. The system activity is developed in two phases: a retrieval phase to gather the documents from the Web and a feedback phase to update the elements used to filter the documents. We focus on the analysis of the feedback phase. With this multi-agent system model the filtering possibilities are increased and, consequently, also the retrieval capabilities on the Web.

This paper presents an abstract multiagent architecture useful for Decision Support Systems (DSS), and shows how this architecture can be instantiated to a particular real-world domain, Bus Fleet Management (BFM). After discussing the benefits of adopting a multiagent approach for DSS, the paper introduces the real world case study and analyzes it. Next, an abstract MAS architecture for DSS in general, and specialized then for BFM case study is presented. The architecture includes a set of different agents which are in charge of different social roles, and what is needed for their coordination, the Coordination Facilitator and the coordination protocols. The use of ontologies is a key step forward for describing the semantics of information on the Web. It is becoming more and more important to make the information machine-readable, since the volume of data is continuously growing. In the educational area, metadata are considered to be helpful in such a process. We propose to enrich the description of educational resources by introducing several levels of description of concepts, and to make them machine-readable by using a formal language of ontology, OWL. Using both this ontology and the expressive power of an OWL query language to query pedagogical resources will improve the retrieval and interchange of educational resources.

The special needs of the OLAP technology was the main cause of the use of a multidimensional view of the data. As a result of the use of this technology in new fields of knowledge (e. g. medical data) and the integration of data from heterogeneous sources, it has become necessary for multidimensional models to supports new needs. To model complex or nor well defined domains or to integrate data from semi/non-structured sources (e.g. Internet) or with incompatibilities in their schemata is complicated using crisp multidimensional models. In these situations we need a model able to manage imprecision in the structures and data as a result of the modelling and/or integration. In this paper we present an OLAP system based on a fuzzy multidimensional model that uses fuzzy logic. The use of fuzzy structures (hierarchies and facts) and the definition of the normal OLAP operations (roll-up, drill-down, dice, slice and pivot) enable the model to manage the imprecision of these situations, hiding at the same time the complexity to the user by means of user views.
