Into the framework of the Almanzora*GIS project, which has the objective of building a GIS tool to develop two counties in the northern part of the province of Almeria, it was required to build an insolation model to evaluate proposals to stop the erosion of the area. Due to the lack of detailed field data and the complex topography of the area, we decided to compute the insolation theoretically using the SolarFlux macro with ARC/Info. Computing insolation limits through the year was relatively easy using solstitial values, but evaluating the received insolation through the year, taking account of the relief required a long computation time. In this work, we present how we evaluated the impact, in quality of data and computing time, by taking account of the relief in the study area and its environment, as well as the distribution of the influence of the relief. This study presents a methodology and an example of the analysis of the conditions to compute the insolation maps taking account of the relief conditions.

In this paper, we propose a mathematical model for the dimensioning of a 3G multimedia network and design a Tabu search heuristic to solve it. The model is an anticipative one in which we assume that we know a priori the traffic over the planning period, and the dimensioning is consequently defined with a kind of best possible call admission control procedure. Due to the potentially large number of sessions and periods, solving the mathematical program can be done only for small size instances, so a heuristic approach is required for solving larger instances. Experimental results are provided for some multi-service multi-period problems.

We study mathematical models and discuss optimization algorithms for the dimensioning of 3G multimedia networks. We propose two models which aims at dimensioning networks with both a radio and a core component. The first one is an anticipative one in which we assume that we know a priori the traffic over the planning period and the dimensioning is defined with a best possible call admission control procedure. The second one is a causal one in which we define an explicit call admission control procedure which makes the accept/reject decisions without any knowledge on the forthcoming traffic. We then compare, on an experimental basis, the dimensioning obtained by both models on some multi-service networks.

Almeria is a Spanish province located southeast the Iberian Peninsula, with a semiarid climate, that holds the largest concentration of greenhouses in the world (> 3000 H). Main restriction of its development if given by its semiarid condition, with overexploited water resources. From 1992 to 1996 our group developed ESTIARA-SIG, a GIS based decision support system for the rural development of the province. Taking advantage of the data included into this system, we evaluated the suitability of developing a catalog of inputs and outputs of the hydrological resources of the Poniente area, where greenhouses and tourist installations are concentrated. Final objective of this catalog, is modeling the use of water of the whole area, taking account not only of quantity of the resource but of their quality.

Almeria, holding the only dessert area of continental Europe, is a semiarid province located southeast the Iberian Peninsula. The development status of the different counties of the province is widely different. Near the coast, greenhouse growing and tourism have generated an extremely active economic area. On the other side, inner areas of the province have gone down economically, with the reduction of mining and classic grows. In order to analyze new development alternatives, we built ESTIARA-Sig for the Ministry of Agriculture of Andalusia: our main objective developing this GIS was to catalog the different resources of the whole province to support development decisions. It includes four types of information: a) alphanumeric data (36 groups/tables, relative to statistics and resources), b) vectorial data (including the cartography), c) raster geographical data (obtained from satellite images, they let us to differentiate specifically greenhouse growing, populated and other areas), and d) photographic images (including types of constructions or special locations). A dynamic user interface was added to facilitate its use. In this work, we present main characteristics of the system and analyze their use along last six years, presenting as conclusions the experience obtained in order to develop a new version.

Searching specific structures of different scales in digital images, we tested multiple alternatives of a mobile window method, developed starting from an algorithm by Cayula and Cornillon. These alternatives presented an increasing computing cost when detecting meso-structures in complex images. Quality borders required processing a great number of window-threshold pairs, because to detect some structures was required to relax the work conditions (bimodality and cohesion). Our proposal, in this work, is relaxing the conditions but not for all the window-threshold pairs, only to a selected set of windows, those near windows that accomplish strict conditions. We propose a new method that it is a combination of the mobile window one, previously used, and the seeded regions approach. In this case, we will seed not region but borders.
