In this article, the problem of measuring and visualizing the response time changes of sequences of partially ordered program tasks in a multi-tasking industrial computer control system is addressed. Response time, defined as the time elapsed from the moment of occurrence of an event in the controlled environment until a reaction of the program to the event, is a crucial parameter which is related with the safe operation of the environment. The proposed measurement technique is based on the use of a hardware-in-the-loop simulation of the controlled environment and the development of two hybrid probes, that are embedded in the multi-tasking system. These probes capture and timestamp the start time and completion time of the sequences of tasks triggered by events generated by the environment. Collected event data and traces are processed and visualized by the use of typical graphics and visualization tools.

This paper presents a technique to design a digital optical-fiber photoplethysmograph. This noninvasive method is based on the measurement of the intensity of an infrared-light beam, which penetrates the index finger. Digital techniques are used to produce the transmitted signal and to demodulate the received signal. Optical fibers are used to transfer the light to and from the sampling point. Frequency analysis of the peripheral volume pulse-wave signal is performed off-line. The power content in the harmonics of this pulse wave may be a useful measure of aging and vascular disease.

A competitive learning vector quantization (LVQ) neural net (ANN) was trained to identify third stage parasitic strongyle larvae from domestic animals on the basis of quantitative data obtained from processed digital images of larvae. Various novel quantitative features obtained from processed digital images of larvae were tested whether they are variant or invariant to the shape taken by the motile larvae during image recording. A total of 255 images of 57 larvae of 5 genera were recorded. 16 novel features were measured of which 7 were selected as invariant to larva shape. By trial and error two of those features, area and perimeter, along with the quantitative features used in conventional identification, overall body length, width, and tail of sheath, were used as an effective training data set for the ANN. This ANN coupled with an image analysis facility and a knowledge relational database became the basis for developing a larva identification system whose overall identification performance was 91.9%. It is fast and objective. Its objectivity is based on the fact that it is not subject to inter- and intra-observer variability arising from the user's profile of competency in interpreting subjective and nonquantifiable descriptions. The limitations of the system are that it cannot handle raw images but only data extracted from images, its performance depends on the reliability of the input vectors used as training data, and its use is restricted to well equipped laboratories since its uses expensive instrumentation.

Architectures for the design of soft real-time systems typically do not facilitate the use of performance tools that will enable a designer to analyse the performance of the system that is being designed. Intercommunication data areas, whose behaviours are characterised by interaction protocols, are the building blocks of many soft real-time systems. The interaction protocols are grouped into families depending on their reading/writing functionality. We present two members belonging to the pool family. These components transfer data among tasks without synchronisation in a non-selective manner. In the basic pool model no task has priority over other tasks whereas in the priority pool model writer tasks have non-preemptive priority over reader tasks. Both queueing models are analysed approximately using a decomposition technique. Basic pool modelling is based on single-server and multi-server semaphore queues. Priority pool modelling is inspired on non-preemptive priority classical analysis.

This paper proposes the V/sub B5.2/ interface as a basis for the definition of the generic Iu interface. The architecture of the emerging network that incorporates a third generation mobile system (UMTS) service node (SN), and any kind of access network (AN) technology, fixed or wireless, over the proposed V/sub B5.2/ oriented generic interface, is presented. The mapping of the call/connection control (CC) related messages, needed for the manipulation of connections, with the involvement of the broadband bearer connection control protocol (B-BCCP), is formed in a generic approach. The paper concludes pointing out possible enhancements to the existing V/sub B5.2/ interface, and mainly to the B-BCCP, in order to play effectively the role as a candidate of the Iu generic interface.
